Made my first DIY this morning. Wasn't great...wasn't bad...but wasn't great. Made a 10mL bottle of 6mg using Pear, Caramel, and a drop of Vanilla Cream. Needs less pear and gotta take out the Vanilla Cream next time. It wasn't 'perfumy' but it was 'flowery.' Used 1mL Pear, 0.2mL Caramel, and 2 drops of Vanilla Cream. Should've used the Cream Cake I bought yesterday. lol. Think I'll be diluting it down a bit. Oh well. It's a fun experience!

You may want to give it some time for the flavors to play nice. I am always so impatient I can't wait but I have vaped some that did actually improved. And I have used some that where added to other juices just to enhance. Glad you are having fun.

Welcome to diy. Which brand flavors were you using? Sometimes leaving the cap off overnight will help perfumey or flowery either one. Pear should go ok with a little cream if you have any. Also the Caramel and Vanilla Cream should go together I would think. Keep after it. Once you get a couple of recipes that you love, you'll be hooked for good like most of us here.

I'm actually using flavors from my local B&M. They sell DIY stuff.
I'll try letting them sit and see what happens. I'm really excited about doing the DIY. I have to remember to try the flavors in my Igo and not my usual dripper...the coil and wicking hold those flavors! lol
Had to rewick my derringer.

It's tough to have to wait once you've made your first little concoction heh! I started with single flavor batches to find out how they tasted by themselves and how to adjust the percentages. I also learned that you could place a drop of whichever flavor in some water and swish the solution in your mouth without having to make a batch to taste test. Haven't tried this strategy myself yet but it seems like it could work. Welcome to the world of DIY and vape on!

Always trying to make things harder on myself, I judge by drops, not percents or ml. So, in a 20ml bottle, I start by using 20 drops of total flavor, then go from there.
1ml of flavor in a 10ml bottle sounds like a lot to me, and may be a culprit in the funkiness you're experiencing.

I'd suggest, next time or whenever, start with less flavoring and add more as you see fit- start at one drop per ml bottle. You can always add more.

and of course, steeping is important, but you'll never go from terrible to wonderful. If i hate a juice within moments of making it, then I'm probably never going to like it enough to vape it.

"place a drop of whichever flavor in some water and swish the solution in your mouth without having to make a batch to taste test"

GENIUS! why didn't I think of that! Thank you kind sir.

On any New Recipe, I would let it sit for 3 ~ 4 days in a Cool, Dark Place and then come back and retaste it.

Also, I'm not very experimental - found a few mixes I loved, and just kept making them, lol!
But along the way, I must mention, I found both pear and caramel to be, well, WEIRD.
Meaning NOT easy to get the right blend, and easy to make kind of icky.
So don't get frustrated with 'em - maybe try some completely different flavor profiles, too.

It's hard to screw up a strawberry-banana, but if you get the balance off with either pear or caramel, you can get a pretty nasty combination.

Oh - and I OFTEN use The Flavor Apprentice "Bavarian Cream" to add creaminess to fruit flavors.

Have fun!!

Since i started DIY last month i've managed to mix 7 recipes with only 2 home runs, the other 5 were simply poor percentage calculations regardless of steep time. But i'm happy with my Strawnana shortcake and Wild cherry cheesecake. Have a large order of flavors due on Monday, so i can get started on some vanilla custards and dark chocolate pomegranate.

I think I'm going to go back to the strawberry for my next attempt. I will say that I have...banana issues, though, so I'll be staying away from banana for a long while. We did Fisher Esterification in Organic Chemistry lab last year - we called it 'the banana lab.' It's the reaction that's used to make synthetic banana flavor/scent. I smelled of banana for weeks...and could still smell banana for weeks after that. Ick! lol

One of my absolute favorite DIY juices in my library is peanut butter-banana creme. Both flavors are "soft" so when making 20ml, I usually use 15 drops of each flavor (which violates my "1drop per 1ml" rule previously stated).

You'll learn which flavors are "soft" and which are "hard" after using them.

Like, grape- definite hard flavor
but, tuttifruiti- definite soft flavor
and geeeeezzzz, cherry- hardest flavoring own.

I think that once you have a feel for the characteristics of each flavor by itself, you'll be better able to mix them, and at different percentages (or drops, if you like to reinvent the wheel).
