First death from vaping, or publicity stunt? The latter.

The Snopes people contacted the Jacksonville Mayo Clinic and so far have been able to find no confirmation that such an event ever happened. When they called the clinic, the PR department said they had been swamped with calls all day asking about the rumor, so apparently lots of other people are interested in the story.

Another interesting tidbit is that the Facebook author's linkedin page says she is a fundraiser for the American Cancer Society. So, there's that.

I call bunk on this.

Absolute bunk. In this day of technology and how we can sniff out facts from the internet, I'm surprised that people think that they can pull this type of crap off.

In the FaceBook post, the person made the claim that they want to get this shared as much as possible. Seems as though that was accomplished. :grr:

This is a same sorta propaganda that was posted on facebook about 2 months ago about a guy who's mod blew up while he was vaping. Pictures showed his mouth and tongue burned with a stripe on his tongue.

Come to find out, the ..... tried to kill himself with a gun loaded with blanks and had nothing to do with vaping.

I think vaping almost killed me once... Totally Wicked used to have a juice flavor called "Diablo Loco" that was made with Naga Jolokai pepper extract or something... even diluted that stuff could make a grown man cry... I love spicy food, but apparently I was not prepared for inhaling it.
Closest thing that I can compare it to is those "natural" sinus medicines... like Afrin, but made with capsaicin... once it's in your nose, there's no getting rid of it. Ya just gotta ride it out... LOL

It may be easier to disprove false claims in these days, but the only people who are going to care are those with a vested interest in the matter. The average Joe Schmoe who comes across the false report is going to take it at face value and not look any further into it. That is what the anti-vape groups are relying on. Build enough public sentiment against vaping and it makes their job easier, regardless of facts.

I saw that fb post yesterday. It upset and discouraged me because I am new to vaping and my husband is constantly trying to convince me how much more horrible than just sticking to cigs is. I must be naive because the thought that it might be completely fake never crossed my mind....I DID think this lady must have already had some kind of underlying issue to begin with....emphysema, copd or similar, though.
So it's fake?

Oh, believe me, I know. We are constantly trying to refute, comment on and generally disprove any stories that we find coming out.

You might want to join CASAA and join their Facebook page. Membership is free and the FB page helps to bring negative news stories to light so that we may comment on them.

If anyone has any interest in joining the fight, just click on my signature banner. We can use all the help we can get. More members show how dedicated we are. The more members, the louder the voice we have.

My Facebook is littered with shares of obvious hoaxes. By obvious, I mean anyone intelligent can see through it. The problem is, most people are quite dumb. It's true. I have hundreds of Facebook friends and most are intellectual idiots. I've seen this post already, and other things like it. Raw onions are poisonous when left in the fridge for a day, leaving them around the house absorbs the flu though... Its crazy. We can't combat stupid.

If someone posts something on FB that is unbelievable, I usually sniff it out then in the comment section I will post a link debunking the crap article. I have managed to get a few people to stop reposting crap stuff before actually looking for the truth.

Ya have to dispute those that you see come across the feed or people assume that your silence means that it is the truth.

I really am glad to see people discussing this matter like civilized people and providing opportunities to get the word out. I must say, I like it here. And the rest of us on Reddit thank you for joining together with us to help disprove this obvious hoax. To be honest, we were looking into the exploding mod issue, but we couldn't figure it out. I was even talking with my neighbors this afternoon about it. Naturally, they're anti-vaping, so they just chalked it up to ecigs being dangerous and unstable. The best we on reddit could come up with was some stupid move like an extremely low build or removal of the switch seal (oh my god, the amount of idiots who do this to their mech mods is astounding.) resulting in a battery vent. We never considered a suicide attempt. If you don't mind, I'd like to bring this information back to the subreddit so the word can be spread even further. I'll also be bragging to my neighbor about the suicide attempt being the cause of that injury.
