I’ve started my first 3 experiment in DYI with mixed results. (no surprise)

[I’ll preface that I mix for someone else, so as much as something may smell great to me, I recognize it may be quite different in flavor to him. ]

OK - my fist question is on the merits of mixing PG only and flavor then adding the PG with nicotine later. I have started this way, as I would like to avoid unnecessary handling (and possible disposal) of nicotine if the batch goes bad. I figure that I will need a bit more steeping after I add the PG with Nicotine since his desired level is 30mg/ml - I’m using 60mg/ml nicotine which is a significant dilution to the PG with Flavor.

I’m curious if anyone else on here handles the mixing in this manner?

I would also really appreciate advice on the mixes themselves:
I’ll start with the one that seems awful at the moment.

Experiment 1
I mixed a 10 ml batch with 20% total flavoring 15% LA watermelon and 5% TFA koolada
This one is complete with the PG nicotine.

At fist smelled great and he said tasted good, but turned medicine flavored.
This mix only sat for about an hour before use so maybe needed more steeping or airing?
24hours later it still smells like medicine.

Should I steep it more ??? or air it ??? or dump it?

I read something on here about vinegar….. stay with me here…. I considered if it’s a dumper I could add a few drops of apple cider vinegar and green apple flavor to see what it does.. could be good..??... could be an even bigger disaster. :glare:… Ok I also eat Sushi with abandon so there you go..

Experiement 2
FA Burley
To see what this is all by it’s self- I’m not sure how it is as a stand alone.
reading this is a strong flavor - I mixed 3% FA Burley to 10ml PG with anticipation of an additional 10ml of PG with Nicotine once it’s sat a bit. (The 3% calculation is for a total of 20ml mix) Am not sure what flavors go well with this. The person I’m mixing for was partial to the swisher sweets and to pipe tobacco. He mentioned a product he used to like called ‘half and half’ AKA Burely and Bright. In a flash, I figured FA Burely may be a good start- I have no idea what ‘bright’ would be.

Experiment 3
FA Burley mix in hopes of making something that may (or may not) resemble a Cherry pipe tobacco

Started with 5 ml PG
10 drops of FA burley
2 drops of LA black walnut
2 drops of LA vanilla butternut
2 drops of TFA black Cherry

(40 drops =1 ml)

Again this mix is with the plan to add another 5ml of PG with nicotine if it smells right.
So far it smells pretty good, though I’m not sure it will be anything like a cherry pipe tobacco.

Thanks again for suggestions and experience.

5% Koolada is really huge in my book, so if it tastes like something weird, that would be my guess. I use Koolada in butterfly fart amounts as a tiny bit goes a long way.

Burley tastes different depending on what percentage is used. 2% and 8% taste nothing alike and this is true of the majority of FA's tobaccos. Burly can also be used on butterfly fart amounts, but it also works at higher percentages. FA tobaccos are some of the most challenging to work with, but can be very rewarding. Experiment 3 indicates you are ambitious. It has the same number of ingredients of one of my favorite tobacco recipes which took me about 5 months to get right working on it at least 3 times a week.

Oh, and tobacco recipes can have their flavor changed with different nicotine solutions, and usually need steeping, so what you get before nicotine may not be anything like afterward depending on the nicotine. (XV's stuff has no taste impact, but it's a rarity in nicotine suspensions.)

Thank you for the info.

Hmm so perhaps adding more PG mix and a touch watermelon to cut the koolada ratio would be good.

experiment 3 was a 'what the heck' so far it smells great-not exactly like cherry pipe but nice anyway.. I'll let it sit for a week or so. I suspect working in even smaller batches may be in order to use the nicotine upfront. thanks again

Oh and a PPS I didn't actually think of the RY4 as being an experiment, but it's turning into one.
I mixed 20% of the TFA RY4 for a total of 10ml PG and Nicotine PG.
yesterday it was very vanilla today it's really strong perfume. Unapproachable..
Did I mix too much flavor in? or does it just need to mellow?

so far I'm really liking the FA Burely to work with over the RY4.

I consider LorAnn Watermelon to have been a waste of my money after having mixed it in over a half dozen batches at different percentages. It has just never yielded a decent flavour...

HOWEVER, Capella's Sweet Watermelon at 8% with 1% TPA Koolada was lovely.

Right, that is a sign of too much flavoring. Click that blue 3 below my picture and read my blogs so you will get a "leg up" on what flavoring levels are and how to tell one level from another.

I like working with FA's Burley too. At tiny amounts it can help meld other tobaccos together too.

As for Koolada, try starting at 1 drop per 10ml and work from there.

Hey thanks this is very helpful. I can see that holding back on too much flavor is an art. Must resist the notion: 'if some is good then more is better' ;-)

I could really use some help with the Menthol Crystals. It turns out the the state of Idaho does not allow the sale of Everclear. Nor (I'm told) does neighboring Washington state. I'm not really up for a drive to Montana Oregon or Nevada...

Sooo would I be better off mixing with Vodka? or straight with the the PG? I'm not all that excited about 151 Rum menthol...
