Hi Everybody!

I'm a total newb, but a quick learner. I've been lurking for a while and learning all kinds of new info. About a year and a half ago, I purchased a starter set up, but just never found it to compare to analogs. Eventually, I put it away and kept making payments to my "Death By Installment" plan...

Anyway, I finally realized that I just need to get off the tobacco. So I broke out the kit I bought. Here's a pic:

Someone correct me if I'm wrong, but I think it is a RN4081 (aka super mini?).

When I got this, there just wasn't that much info about vaping easily available; like many have mentioned here, I wanted something that was close to analogs as possible. When I tried it before, it just seemed like the vapor production was so inconsistent. Sometimes nice thick vapor, other times almost nothing, and I was constantly craving.

So, I break this out and charge up the PCC, try out the cig, and the battery seemed to be working (light came on, no blinking), but no vapor. So I charge up the battery off the PCC, it all seemed good... Still no vapor. I try out the unused atty, freshly filled cartridge, even put a little juice on the atty. I kept trying it, and I did get some vapor, but only once every 15-20 tries. Then, nothing. Battery lights up, but no heat, no vapor.

I start looking around the tubes and I came across ECF.

As I said, I have been lurking for a bit and I've come to the conclusion the battery is toast. So, I'll get a couple of new ones. However, after learning quite a bit here, I've come to realize that I have much to learn.

Here's my profile: I smoke about a pack of analogs a day - full flavor. I work from home, so I'm looking at getting a pass-through, but I would like to keep what I can from the stuff I have and start out vaping with it, and also be able to use it in the future when I do go out. Then I can learn more and try out some of the other gear that's out there, while getting off the tobacco and getting into vaping.

Interested in any and all advice that anyone is willing to give. Thanks!

PS: Can anyone give a quick recommendation where to get some batteries and a pass-through for this?

There are many reputable vendors on this site - click the forum suppliers. I have a couple of pass thrus. I have one at the computer and one beside my TV chair. I don't use it exclusively and tend to hit the batteries more. I've been ordering from Smokeless Image and AltSmoke. They have a wide array of products. Smokeless Image has an X2 battery that can work as a pass thru when charging. They have tanks, clearos, and carts. Everything fits everything on their site, less the T3 tank which only fits the X2 battery. Their juice is good too, I like Country and RY4 the best.

Unfortunately, I don't recognize what that is (I'd be willing to bet most people here wouldn't) so I can't help you there. Though, to be honest, it does look like a low quality device, which is not ideal if you're serious about switching.

Those guys got me off of cigarettes for good! There's a LOT of stuff out there and it's easy to get overwhelmed. Just keep it simple. Best of luck.

Some of the old timers might be able to help you out with that unit, but it appears to be a 2-piece cartridge and battery unit. Those started losing favor about the time you purchased that unit, I'm afraid. I'm not aware of any vendors that still deal with those. I seriously doubt that the flavor cartridges are useful after being a year and a half old. The charging cord might still work, but you get new ones with new batteries anyway. Not much left from that kit that you can still use, unless I'm not seeing everything.

You need a new setup. But in hindsight, that's a good thing. Technology has come a long way since 1 1/2 years ago and two-piece cartridges.

I assume you wish to continue with a cigalike battery size, even though I don't recommend them. The best company to deal with would be Smokeless Image Smokeless Image | Only The Best Electronic Cigarette | Smokeless Image Electronic Cigarettes - The Future is in your hands. A popular company here on ECF that focuses on beginner and intermediate vapors. All of their equipment is compatible with one another, so there is no worry will this work with that.

They sell 2 sizes of cigalikes, and three of the eGo size (cigar) batteries. I'd recommend a starter's kit with at least 2 of the smaller batteries (78mm) and a charger. I'd also recommend getting one of the larger X2 batteries at least for home use; the charging cord doubles as a passthru. Plan on the smaller 78mm batteries to last you 3-4 hours of use between charges. The X2 batteries will last 7-13 hours, depending upon which size you get.

Smokeless Image has two lines of e-juices. And although I don't recommend these, they do have pre-filled cartomizers. Eventually you will learn to fill your own juice delivery devices to save a load of money. It's not hard at all, and there are demo videos on the SI website to show you how to fill each type of device. I would recommend around 18mg nicotine strength to begin with.

while that will work it will never fully get you to quit and gear is quite expensive for what little it does.

I would recommend moving right up to an ego system of some kind, there are 1000's of accessories that actually work, passthroughs, tanks, carts and just goes on and on and the way they are threaded means they wont be going anywhere anytime soon as this has become THE standard now for any and almost all things vaping.

I agree, the 3 piece was about the worst of the worst, even in the day, they were terrible! I'd pitch it and find something more "friendly"!
The Volt cigalike gets a lot of praise, Vapor4life's Titan batteries work well (but pricey), but both are 808 threading. With the vast amount of new developments I'd suggest something with 510 connections, the most common, giving you more options in the future rather than dealing with what I am, converting all my 808 stuff over, or using adapters that suck!
As others have said, I'll also suggest an EGO, they really are about the best thing to come down the pike in a long while for ease of use. Not that much more or bigger than a cigalike battery, but run time and usability is night and day! Pick up two of them, one wont last all day and backups rule!
Do some looking, come back here and ask some questions and we'll guide you as best we can, but there so many better options out there I wouldn't even waste my time trying to get that going!

Loads of great info! I was afraid I might need to start all over, and willing to accept it, but was hoping for some use from it... maybe some day I can sell it on feeBay as a vintage set-up! lol

Still would enjoy hearing anyone else's opinions/advice; I'm going to keep looking around and check back tomorrow... with more questions, I'm sure.

I think you are! You walked me through putting a carto tank together when I was totally intimidated by it! Now it's what I use about 90% of the time.

I consider myself an older user, i remember getting a few of these they would only hold a few drops of liquid and maybe get you 20 puffs before refilling the carts. Im going to suggest what most people will suggest get an ego of some kind and maybe a tank, but if you plan on just switching to vaping instead of using it to quit i would suggest skipping steps and getting a higher end device like a provari or similar, im still kicking myself for spending like $500+ and finally deciding on a provari, but over all do your research and find what suits your needs

While I do completely agree with your point, and have grown tired of the "disposable" part of this industry, I don't think selling two EGO's to get going terribly hard to do with a newbie that may or may not take to it. IF I see the same poster a few weeks or months later looking for upgrade suggestions, then I'm happy to sell the merits of the better devices. But most don't know if this will work for them, don't understand the resale aspect of the value in these purchases, and really don't understand the cost savings over the long run.
I'd rather a $30 EGO sit and collect dust than a $200 APV.

I understand what you are saying, believe me. I would have saved hundreds of dollars if I had gone straight to the Provari from the Smokeless Image Volts. But I knew nothing of variable voltage at the time I bought my BB and Silver Bullet. I would have been content with those, too, had the owner of Altsmoke not put a Kick in my Silver Bullet and let me try my tankful of my favorite juice at higher voltage for the first time. I was spoiled at that point on. Provari on the horizon.

Beginners don't really know what they want, because they aren't aware of what is available or even what is best for them. We experienced vapors can only provide them some knowledge and guidance, and let them make the decision on what works best for them, not us.

It takes the majority of beginners some time to feel comfortable using a battery larger than a cigarette. I remember I was one of those. It only took me about two weeks to realize a bigger battery was in my future. But I had to go through that learning process to get to that point. The same is true about mods and variable voltage devices.

My closest friends, family, and co-workers listened to my preference for mods with replaceable, rechargeable batteries and got one of their own after trying my own overnight. There's just no comparison, but it's tough for beginners to realize that right out of the gate.

I agree. I started with a regular 650mAh eGo and I'm glad I did. If I had gotten a Twist right off the bat, I wouldn't have had anything to compare it to. And even when I got my first Twist, the benefits were lost on me for a couple of months, since after smoking cigarettes for so longer I couldn't taste many juices, no matter what voltage.

Welcome to the ECF!

Yes that's an RN4081. What I started on in 2008. You can actually still get cartos for them. Carto is a one piece (atomizer and cartridge combined). They work really well and I still use them, but with 510 batteries using a 4081-510 adaptor. I bought them at VaporGod .
I would suggest rather getting something better though. If you want that mini size, have a look at the eRoll. Also available at VaporGod. The eRoll is the latest and best of the mini ecig range. I have one and LOVE it.

If you are willing to go bigger; consider an eGo battery and maybe a MiniVivi Nova (clearomizer).
