Hey everyone

I've been vaping on and off on my evod with protank 3 for a couple months and finally decided it was time to move on, so I purchased my first mech mod.

I have a copper nemesis, tobh 2.5, chuff enuff drip tip, aspire atlantis, ohm reader, 26 and 30g kanthal, organic cotton, 2 AW 18650 1600mah, and a Xtar VC2 charger coming in tomorrow

So I've been reading this forum and watching videos specifically on ohms law and building coils so I can get started as soon as my stuff arrives sometime tomorrow, and I have a couple questions.

1. So it seems like most people use a screwdriver set to wrap their coils, is there any specific one I should buy? Or is any kit ok. Same with tweezers, any kinda or is there some specific type/brand that works the best.

2. In some videos I watched, it seems people build the coil, put it on their mod, fire it a few times, clamp the coils with tweezers, THEN put it on their ohm reader. But from what I read, shouldn't I check the ohms before firing? Kinda confused with this.

Thanks in advance

Congrats, you're in for a lot of fun! I couldn't help but notice you didn't mention a multimeter for your batteries -- consider an el cheapo $5 one just to test them as they come off the charger and out of the mod. An ohm reader can tell you if your atomizer is shorting, but not if mod itself or batteries are going wonky.

1. The brand and type of screwdrivers or drill bits doesn't matter, they're just used to get specific sizes. Old ones, new ones, a fancy coil jig -- it's just a way to get a consistent size.

2. You definitely want to check the ohms before firing in case you have a short, especially on a mech mod.

3. Any tweezers are fine, ceramic are more expensive but non-conductive so you can use them with a hot coil (though still be super careful). If you're using normal ones, make sure you aren't firing as you're using the tweezers or you become part of the circuit and well, obviously they can get a bit hot. If it matters, I wore out the ends of my ceramic ones and didn't feel the need to replace them, so am back with the regular.

*gives the horns*

Welcome to the forums, from watching videos mostly everyone uses precision screw driver sets like this. It has the common sizes your hear like 1.4,2.0,2.4 and 3.0 sizes.

$3.12 6 Pieces Metric Precision Screwdriver Set With Case at FastTech - Worldwide Free Shipping

Also tweezers the ceramic version is good for squeezing coils while firing because they are non conductive.

$11.74 Heat Resistant Stainless Steel Tweezers for E-Cigrettes - ceramic flat tip at FastTech - Worldwide Free Shipping

You might be able to find these locally, but lots use fasttech but takes a month to receive.for the price.

Awesome
Thanks for the indepth answers

The charger I bought tells me the mah my batteries are at, so do you still think I should buy a multimeter?

It couldn't hurt.
Most connect right to the 510 on your mech/mod so can check on the fly without having to remove the batteries.
Handy if you carry it around all day. No sense being tied to the charger.

If it were me, I would, but my face is beautiful and I want to keep it.

As mentioned by bjorhyn, when you're first getting the lay and learning how things vape, you don't have to remove the battery and put it on the charger -- but the real issue for me is testing your mech itself for shorts, not just the atomizer, which can happen. If anything goes weird with the charger, you've got a way to test what the batteries are doing -- and if you're doing things like squeezing the coils and don't want to keep taking it off and on....

You can get them for $3-5 (free via the harborfreight tricks), and while they're junk, they do the job we're talking about. Touch the leads to get an idea of their internal resistance, then subtract that number from your reading and you're good to go.

Makes sense, I'll make sure a buy one

Thanks I'll look into those. Hopefully I can find them locally since I don't wanna wait any longer lol

Yep! You might look around if there's one around you, they've got a coupon on their website or something where you can get a free multimeter with any purchase. Buy a package of razor blades for $0.25 and you're set. I forget how it works, but hey googling it could find it.

And yes, it's not a great multimeter -- but it'll do just fine. Just remember your Ohm might be off by 0.1 and remember to subtract the resistance you get when you touch the leads.

I would definitely listen to the Batman regarding gear.

You know he keeps that utility belt functioning!
