Hello Everyone!

My background in a nutshell: I'm new to vaping. I've now been vaping for 1 month now and so far it has been great (i quit smoking altogether coming from 35+ sigarettes a day). In the beginning it was very fiddly with the settings, not getting the flavour/hit i wanted, but the last 2 weeks i think i found the sweet spot for me. I've been using my Presa TC75W Mod together with my Nautilus Mini Clearomizer.

The only thing i found lacking the last couple of weeks was the nicotine level and ability to vape High VG liquids. I've been using 6mg's but for me it was just a bit too low. It was also annoying at work that i required much more time compared to smoking to feel 'fulfilled'.

So i decided to go with a higher dosage of nicotine: 12mg's and ordered a couple of flavours i know i like. But since i was reading up on the whole TC hype and what it could bring to the table, i thought, why not order a new clearomizer that is also capable of TC mode.

So i went ahead and bought the Kangertech Subtank Mini (tanktop) together with some Ni200 coils.

Sidenote: i'm not really interested in the whole sub-ohming business. But i thought it would not hurt to order this tank since i was only gonna use it in TC mode anyway. And the way i understand it/imagined it, it would give me just the 'same' experience as the nautilus mini but it would be easier to get adjusted to. And also the ability to vape High VG liquids.

I say 'same' because i understand that no 2 tanks are alike.

Now i'm on my way home. A few bottles delicious flavours with 12mg Nicotine strength and a brand new tank that would hopefully give me an easier experience vaping. I could not wait to try it out. Untill i actually did...

Here are the steps i took:

1) Primed the Coil
2) Screwed in the Ni200 Coil. (0,15 ohm)
3) Filled up the tank (70% VG) and let it sit for another 15-20 minutes untill i was sure there were no air bubbles popping up anymore.
4) Started my Presa TC75W and set it to TC Ni Mode.
5) Navigated to the Ohm symbol and locked it.
6) Set the wattage to 20W to start with.
7) Set the temperature to 220C (10C increments are used on the device)
8) Tried my first TC vape.

Not what i expected... No flavour and almost no smoke. Also the subtank mini has a waaaay to airy draw, even when almost shutting down the vent. So i tried to up the temperature/wattage bit by bit. Hopefully this works!

Actually the experience only got worse and worse... Little smoke and no flavour at all. In the end i was left fulfilled nicotine wise, but my throat was irritated because of what felt like 'dry' hits and my motivation down the drain.

Now i don't actually know what to do. Did i just buy my first poisoned apple (the tank)? Is it the liquid? Did i buy too high of a nicotine level? Did i configure the device incorrectly? I did try the same liquid on the nautilus mini and at least there i get some flavour...

One thing i did notice though is that even though i locked the resistance, it appears to be still changing when i vape in TC mode. Also, when I chain vape a couple of times the device goes into 'Temp Protection' which does not sound good to me. The device actually gets pretty warm and so does the tank.

Might this be the reason of my let down first TC vape?

But how do i fix it? That's why i'm turning to you guys, might you have any idea what i did wrong?

Thanks a lot, please ask if u require more information and sorry for the wall of text in advance! I do like to type. :)

In truth, too many factory TC coils are not up to the task and the mod hits severe temp protection immediately leading to very weak vapor and an unsatisfactory experience.
When TC works, it's a really good vape. When you have a mod and coil that just refuses to give you a good vape, it's a futile exercise.
I find the most reliable coils (for me) are 0.5 SS Cubis coils vaped using the SS316 setting.
I barely got any Kanger Ni200 coils to even work.

First thing I would try is increasing the wattage with the temp set back. You need more than 20W to get the coil going good - try 30 as a start. Another thing would be to open the air flow back up. With it closed off, it will hit the temp limit quicker and will make it less satisfying.

Because of the need for higher air-flow, no sub-Ohm tank is going to have the tight MTL draw like the Nautilus.

Nothing's *wrong* with it, if that's your bag, but a lot of people switching from smoking tobacco don't seem to get on with it straight away and tend to prefer more MTL-style, high-nic style of vaping.

When one considers the amount of extra juice and battery consumption that sub-ohming requires, it would seem a poor choice for ADV in one is satisfied with MTL, lower-wattage, higher-resistance vaping.

It seems that with modern, high-powered regulated gear, that 'SubOhm' has lost it's usefulness as an absolute meaning any more - it was handy in the days when one *needed* a mech to get to those power levels, but those days are over.

Plenty of people vape these days on 0,5 Ohm coils in an MTL, tootle-puffer style when technically those 0,5 Ohm heads are smack dab in the middle of 'SubOhm' territory.

Back to basics sounds like good advice to me. The Kanger TTM (top tank mini) can be fitted with 1.2ohm (or higher, I don't recall) coils. There generally are three air flow settings: tiny hole, small hole and open slots. The tiny hole is kinda-sorta similar to a Nautilus draw however the larger coil and chamber size of the TTM will effect the flavor.

While the Kanger STM/TTM's can be closed down, they won't vape the same as a Nautilus. The added bonus however is the optional (often included) "RBA" section which will allow you to wind your own coils. (something you may wish to get into later)

I was a PAD+ smoker when I started. I'm 56 and smoked for many years since the age of 21. I also have chewed tobacco and smoked cigars.

In Sept of 2015, I started with a 75W Sigelei. Within a month I had a 150W Sigelei. I was using the same tank, an Aspire Atlantis II, but the vapor was great.

Now I have 10+ box mods, some unregulated, and I vape at around 130W on a Sig 213, Non TC. My only problem with all of these recommendations is that, if the person is going to vape for more than 2 or 3 months...I consider a device under 100W a waste of money. Just drive down the highway at 75MPH and throw it out the window. In 2 months you will get nothing for that setup.

I prefer to get people set up in something they will use for at least 6 months. Now, I don't know what style of vaping they are going to prefer but a 100W to 200W device covers it all, and they can be had for $40 (See the preorder for Wismec RX200s COLORS).

We both have opinions. Now you know mine.

Get some triton mini coils for your nautilus. You can get them in ni200 .15 ohm if you want to try tc mode.

Although I am not big into TC, I have tried a few factory coils with different wire on different tanks. The nickel coils on a subtank mini was one of the first I tried and the first I plain did not like and gave up on. Oh, wait! It was the second one I gave up on....nickel on an Atlantis came in first. Still trying to give some others a chance, but mostly use power mode.

I've tried SS, TI, Nickle etc.. everyone likes to vape different you might say this <insert coil temp control wire> is the best, I'll say it sucks. you'll hit my vape and say it's to hot and I'll be like what your temp vape is to low. Personal preference goes a long ways. Vape what you like temp or watt mode, w/e you chose is right since everything is better then the alternative.

I totally disagree with you I have been vaping for 9 months and do not go over 25 watts. Have a friend that has been vaping for 3 years and doesn't go over 15 watts

30W at 220C should do the trick, if not & combined with your description I'm inclined to think there's a wicking problem, probably caused by your max VG juice.

Maybe you could thin it a little with 7 or 8% distilled or demineralized water? Even tap water would be fine just to try out if it does anything. That is assuming there's a reason you don't use PG by the way, otherwise you could use some PG to thin it out as well.

I have a Toptank mini too but have only used it with the RBA (rebuild-able) coil that comes with it. That one works fine with max VG juice (I'm around 82% VG myself) if you feel like giving that one a shot. I use mine with Ti wire for TC but SS would be fine too. I wouldn't recommend nickel to a newbie, it's a bit difficult to work with from what I gather.

    Hi and welcome.

First... IGNORE all the anti-TC people, they are locked in their ways, were not able to get it to work for them, and they can't help you and will only put it down.... TC is absolutely fantastic when you have it working right.

I'll try to go one thing at a time.

    The good news:
Your mod should be fine, it's a decent model.

    The bad:
Your tank used to be somewhat popular, but it's not longer in favor, with issues that I read or hear about on a regular basis, and it's seldom used now.

BUT you should still be able to use it just fine, just be aware that there's a lot of better tanks out there now.

Liquids: High VG is about cloud production not flavour. It is thick, sweet, and you need a coil that can handle it well. To get flavour out of it, it needs to steep (age) quite a bit. Unless you have sensitivity to PG, you should not bother about high VG... at 50/50 or such, it's a good balance. Liquids that have lots of sweeteners will destroy coils very quickly.

With a good sub-ohm tank.coil, the nicotine delivery is almost doubled.. so with a regular Ohm setup, 12mg might be what you find good for you, but with a sub-ohm tank, 6mg should be fine, most people end up going to 3mg and be fully content with that low level.

Priming: you have to prime correctly:
    1) 6-8 drops down in the center chimney of the coil slowly to get it to soak into the wick.
    2) pump the side holes with more liquid
    3) put coil in tank, close airflow, without triggering the mod, simply suck a few pulls to get the wicking going.
    4) open airflow, wait 20 seconds

Wattage, check the recommended wattage for the coil, start at the lower end+10W, and increase until 10W below the max. I find that pushing it at the max is not a good thing, it causes shorter lifespan of the coil and tends to give you dry hits if hte wick can't keep up.

Temperature, 200C is really low... start a bit higher and increase... I tend to stick with F on mine and usually start at 430 with new coils, and work up... my normal range is 46-510 (mine is at 490 right now, just switched to C and at 255C, I'm getting about the same decent warmth). The liquid itself can make a huge impact, and part of the beaty of TC is that you can easily adjust when you refill wiht something new and find that it's different (and you increase or lower the temp accordingly).

Sore throat... probably the nicotine was too high, again, sub-ohming increase the hit, while you don't get the cloud effect that you're looking for.

The Temp control on the screen means that you're hitting the set temperature (and that's normal)... if the device is getting hot and nothing is coming out, it's probably that the wicking is just not working all that great.

For type of coil, NI is just fine, TI can be a bit trickier I find, and SS is catching on. Pre-build cartridge coils appear to be hit and miss with just about every company.. I've switched to rebuilding mine and they are 100x better.

The resistance shouldn't change as you vape if you locked it, at least, not by much. I haven't used that mod, so it might behave differently than the ones I have.

You should find a local store that has knowledgeable people, or check Facebook for a local group, where you could find members that you could meet in person and have them give you a hand.
