First vape

Utter failure! No one has ever paid closer attention to instructions than I did meticulously (neurotically) piecing my AW IMR 18650 battery charged to exactly 4.19V, bottle of e-juice exactly 3/4 full, and new (first time using one as a previous cartomizer then clearomizer guy) LR 1.5 ohm atomizer into the reo. Pressed the button. Nothing. Pressed harder. Nothing. Went through the whole trouble shooting list and checked off every one. Nothing. Tried a new atomizer, then new battery. Nothing. Lotta sadness as I thought about the long wait sending my reo back and waiting on a new one. Then I screwed in the first atomizer again, but really (thought I'd break it) tight, and CRACKLE! it came to life. Actually scared and I jumped the exact same way I would have if someone had broken in through the window.

Took a few drags and got a little vapor, and it tasted like that terrible solvent or lube that they ship the atomizer in. Kept trying, but the thing was flooded and tasted so bad (I even had blown it out before) that I didn't want to try and fix it. So I figured I should jump straight to building a coil.

First Coil

I followed the video of the simple coil wrapping 30 g Kenthal around a 2mm silica wick double over on itself. I did about 7 wraps. Put it in the RM2 and got out my new multimeter to check the resistance. My expectations were pretty low. Did I mention that I couldn't get a "made for noobs" atomizer to work? It came out at 1.8 ohms. It was the first thing that had gone right. I squonked and made sure it was soaked. Put on the drip tip and after a few puffs, did a long slow draw and produced a cloud that looked like it came out of a fog machine. It was amazing. I am happy.

Questions I have now that it worked

Why am I so slow witted that I can't use a simple atomizer? (the other two still wouldn't work no matter how tight I screwed them in)

The vapor tasted different (worse) than it does out of the Halo Triton clearomizer set up I was using before this. Actually, it tasted kind of like that garbage from the atomizer, like a sweet, alcohol-y, astringent taste. I thought it would go away after a bit, but it seems to still be there. I get the occasional vape that I can't taste it, but only like 1 in 5 and it seems to always be a first drag after squonking. Do you think I sucked some of that stuff into the bottle and messed up the juice? Should I be squonking more than every 4-5 draws?

With the RM2, it seems like it is pretty hard to overflow with squonking even if you suck at it (as I do). Am I doing it wrong or is it just built to only spill juice if you squeeze it all the way up to that air hole?

My silica has a little bit of a char mark already. Does that mean I should just ditch this one or does that not matter if it is soaked for each draw.

Okay, that's all I've got. Thanks for any help you might have. Oh, and here are the photos of a proud father's first coil.

Make sure your coil isn't sitting too low to the hole.....if so you could get some juice stuck in there when you squeeze it up there and coil will not fire right....you don't want it too high either.....the lower it is to the hole the more vapor you should get as it is sitting right on the air hole......and cooler vape.....

My silica has a little bit of a char mark already. Does that mean I should just ditch this one or does that not matter if it is soaked for each draw. If it tastes burnt then go ahead and change it.....if not keep rocking it if it works......if its just a little brown you should be good.

Just my observations. Your coil should be to the front (opposite from your firing button) use the o-ring that was in the baggy with the RM2 to center it to the front (it goes in the catch cup). The RM2 air hole should be between the posts when screwed down coil should right behind the air hole. The learning curve is much higher on the attys as opposed to the RM2 as I understand it. (I've only used the RM2) Pull the drip tip when squonking and look inside when the juice covers the coil stop squonking. Or Squonk while drawing on the drip tip until you hear or feel it gurgle stop squonking and draw a little more to keep juice from running out air hole. I squonk every 2 or 3 hits YMMV everyone hits a little different. If you wick is getting burned a bit you might need to squonk more often. More help should be coming.

not sure if he used the 1.5mm o-ring but when i use the thicker one (the one that is used in the bottle cap) it will be more than tight once it reaches the firing button......you just have to adjust how you hold it so the air hole is up when you vape.

It sounds to me like your having a problem with the standard atomizer . It would help if we new what atomizer you are using .
I would work on the reomizer from what I can see your coil looks good enough to produce some decent vapor .
You want the hole facing any direction but the way you tilt the mod to vape

Thanks for the help. I'm new enough that each bit I hear helps me understand which direction to head a little better. A lot different having it in your hands and tweaking than reading up before you get it. Getting a lot of vapor now (awesome) so I figure at this point it will mostly be a lot more tweaking with reomizer and coil set ups and positioning.

I guess you must hold it button up. I hold it RM2 up. Some need a o-ring. some don't, and some need larger o-ring. You shouldn't have to adjust the way you hold it you should adjust the RM2 to be in the proper position for the way you hold it so air hole is up. Thus the reason for the o-ring.

yeah i was just saying it depends on the o-ring.....i had the ring that was sent with the RM2 and the hole ended up being positioned opposite of the button all the way screwed down until it stopped.....then recently i replaced that o-ring with the same one that goes in the feeder bottle which is little thicker and you can get a tight seal and position the RM2 pretty much anywhere you want....i just settled with it facing the button......

HAPPY VAPING!!!!!

When using stock dripping atomizers, I have found that dripping liquid into the top of the atomizer when it is brand new before using the squonking bottle to feed juice into the atty seems to work out better.

Wash your stock attys out, let them dry, and try dripping into the top before you put them on your Reo.
