I suspect that the flashing led in a commercial batt is part of the circuitry which detects low voltage. So Google "flashing led on low voltage" I believe this could become a little complicated. Since I know when I'm pushing the button to vape I see no reason for an led telling me I'm doing so. What I do in my mods is put the led right after the main switch. This way I can tell that the power is on and I need to turn it off before putting it in my pocket. I can place the led where it can be covered while vaping (stealth). After using your led in this fashion for awhile one can tell the state of charge in the batteries. No flashing but the led will get dimmer. With more use the led will go out and you'll get no vapor. Possibly curse and think your mod has failed and needs repair, then you're able to get another vape, and the led goes out again. After awhile you get used to this and know right away when you need a recharge (led goes dim). But if you do find a convenient way to do the flashing led thing please post it so everyone has another option in their mods.

These tri color LED indicators are custom made mostly in england. Circuitry is built in
a 12v LED Battery Monitor, voltage and charge indicator - eBay (item 150474037874 end time Oct-28-10 11:03:49 PDT)

If you contact the supplier they can custom make them for various voltage thresholds. I believe the lowest threshold I was quoted was 3.2V. So you could have one built to flash red at 3.2V and be green at 4.2, yellow at 3.6V, etc.
Just contact the supplier and he'll work with you.
Of course there will be greater lead time with a custom build.

Why did I never build one myself you ask?
I decided to try the Digital LED displays instead. As I use regulated 2S setups, the single indicator is not as useful.

It is the protective circuit that make the LED flash. Once the battery gets to the cut off voltage you get that flash. Here is one out of a 510 battery , Tiny little chips they are.

I was thinking that it had more to do with an increased regulator duty cycle because it is unable to meet the vout specified, because the li-ion voltage is too low. They don't blink on my mod with a linear regulator, and the trustfires I got from an american vendor don't blink either, even though they are all protected.

I should have said it is part of the protection circuit. I doubt all protection circuits have it built into the chip. as far as the 510 battery i pulled that chip out of thats the only board in it. That chip some SMD resistors you flip it over it has a SMD LED a couple diodes. Thats also out of a auto battery so it acts as a switch/mosfet too. I am going to try to get a number off it so maybe i can find a data sheet on that chip ,help explain it more.
