Heya Switched, have you ever tried making your own tobacco extracts?

Kurt was successful with pipe tobacco and VG, said it had an excellent satisfying taste. I tried it myself, instead using PG, but unfortunately the extract was extremely dark and not the flavor I was hoping for.

I'm going to give it another go, this time with Drum Golden Mellow and VG. Member BadThad was kind enough to send me a couple of syringe filters which I'll try to use for a final filtering pass after the extract is strained, clarified and thinned.

Hey Max! The reason I used VG was because I thought PG would be to ethanol-like, less polar than VG, and I wanted as little big molecules, like chlorophyls, as possible while keeping the more polar-soluble flavors. The essence I get from it is VERY dark, but I use only 5-10% in a DIY. I suspected that a PG essence would be too plant-tasting, and perhaps that is what you found. I did not want nic to extract into the essence, as I wanted to know what the final nic strength was from high-nic unflavored. Just the flavor was what I was after, and hot VG seems to do a nice job with that. I have no info on how well it selectively extracted flavors, and I am hoping that very little nic extracted, as this would imply that any TSNAs did not also extract. I do enjoy my essence DIYs more than any commercial tobacco juice I've tried, and I am hoping to get a Jazzpipe to further enjoy them.

From my reading the TSNA's are found in the saliva of people who chew certain tobaccos, so I would think they would come accross into any extract. I believe you really must use tobacco without TSNA's to avoid getting them in any WTA extract.

I haven't read anything that says TSNA's are tied to the nicotine content of the plant. I mean, just because you don't extract nic doesn't mean you're not extracting TSNA's. IMHO.

...I thought PG would be to ethanol-like, less polar than VG, and I wanted as little big molecules, like chlorophyls, as possible...

Many moons ago I had experience with ethanol and chlorophyl in conjunction with a homemade reflux still and a certain vegetable material. The result then had me searching for a color name between 'green' and 'black'.

The essence I get from it is VERY dark, but I use only 5-10% in a DIY.

I tried 10-30%. The extract didn't have a very strong taste but then I didn't steep the tobacco overnight.

I suspected that a PG essence would be too plant-tasting, and perhaps that is what you found.

I thought it tasted more like tobacco roots rather than its leaves...

I am hoping to get a Jazzpipe to further enjoy them.

I had to look that up. Nice looking unit! The feature of the preheated incoming air is interesting; I'll bet it does noticeably increase performance.
