I've been DIYing my own liquid for about a year. There are so many recipes & flavors out there to try that I will never be able to afford to try them all. It seems every recipe calls for abuncha flavors I still don't have. What flavors are the most versatile? For instance, there are about 20 different vanilla flavors. Instead of buying a library of vanillas, which vanillas will work best most often. I like mostly tobaccos accented w/ nut, fruit, coffee, chocolate, etc. & fruit creams but will try other stuff. I think this would apply mostly to background or secondary flavors. I use alotta TFA & Capella. Got any suggestions?

The Creams/Vanillas category are all similar to me. Would guess only a few folks with excellent taste buds can perceive the difference and identify each of them within a mix. I try to pick out around 3-4 Creams/Vanillas flavors that I enjoy. I'm still trying to develop (year or so on going) a personal Creams/Vanillas substitution chart. I use the Creams/Vanillas category mostly as enhancers/secondaries to accent the main/prime.
Could check out the WL line of FA in 8ml.quanity. Hard to go wrong on the cost.
Good post, agree with your take.

A substitution chart is a good idea. The flavor discovery process is complex, imprecise, subtle & changeable due to "steeping". Trial & error is expensive, time-consuming & sometimes wasteful. A flavor description, complimentary & substitution chart would put one in the ball park for a targeted flavor within its category. Until then, it's the wild west! Another way to ask the question. What are 5 or 10 flavors every DIYer should keep on hand? Thanks BroBob. I'll chek ur link.

I use mostly TFA flavorings, about 6-7 CAP, and very few of FA and INW. I also love the OSDIY "One Stop Flavors" and "One Stop Blends" (ready to use as is, with addition of just your plain VG, PG, and Nic Base).

For TFA vanillas, fruits, & creams/custards...here's the ones I find myself using the most, in a variety of recipes:

Vanillas:

*Vanilla Bean Ice Cream
*Vanilla Custard
*French Vanilla Creme

Fruits:

Lemon
*Strawberry Ripe
Strawberry
Banana
*DX Banana Cream
*DX Coconut
*Peach
DX Juicy Peach

Creams/Custards:

Vanilla Custard
*Vanilla Swirl (TFA says this is the same formula as their Vanilla Custard, but without acetoin and/or acetyl prop.)
*DX Sweet Cream
DX Bavarian Cream
*Whipped Cream

From CAP:

Blueberry Jam
*Sweet Strawberry
Simply Vanilla
*Vanilla Custard v2
Vanilla Bean Ice Cream

ETA: I went back and put an * in front of the ones that I don't think I personally would give up, if I had a limit on how many I'd buy. Also, I use TFA Sweetener and TFA Cotton Candy for sweeteners, but they're not on the list.

OSDIY may be the best way to go sometimes.

I've tried quite a few of their OSF and OSB, and they've all been good, but so far my favorites are:

@ 8-10% individually:
Lucky Shot
Lotta Latte
Baked Cinnamon Roll
Pink Lemonade (tried some a friend made & I've ordered it)
Blue Raspberry Slush (made by same friend & I've ordered it)

Lucky Shot + Lotta Latte - each @ 6% = what I call a Caramel Latte (OSDIY store owner's ADV, but she makes it at 10% each)

Lucky Shot @ 10% + TFA Key Lime @ 5% = a Key Lime Pie version, (is another one from OSDIY owner)

Blue Raspberry Slush @ 10% + Pink Lemonade @ 5% is the next one I'm trying...but I'm starting alittle lower at 8% + 4%.

The above are so good IMO, that I'm hooked on them! Now I don't order any size less than the 120mL (4oz.) , and sometimes order the 16oz. size (when another ECF member and I each want more than 4oz., and at a better price per mL). Saves on S/H, too, getting the bigger sizes, since we know we both like them and will keep using more.

That is a good list, only a few I don't have. On the Vanilla Bean Ice Cream, I recommend Cap over TFA, TFA has a strong pepper taste to me, but others love it. One I would add if you like nuts is Butter Pecan (flavor west). This is one I just got and am Really Liking it. :D Just 2% to 3% adds a nice nut in the background. :)

That's why I bought both the TFA and the CAP VBIC when I started DIY. I'd heard some like one, some prefer the other. To my own taste, the CAP VBIC is the peppery one, so I prefer the TFA, but still use either one at times. Funny how taste varies individually, isn't it? That's another reason I'm glad vendors offer the samples sizes of their flavorings. You just never know how your own taste is going to like them.

I've heard the FW BP is very good, and I've got it on my next list to order. Good to know 2-3% is about the right amount for a "nutty" taste.

I don't see it mentioned much any more. Is anybody still using it?

If by "it" you mean TFA Dulce de Leche...yes, I just started using it this month in fact. Tried Bill's Magic Vapor's Vanilla Milkshake Base that people were discussing on a thread recently, and I love it! Had only an 8mL vial of the DdL, so ordered a 4oz. bottle of it 2 weeks ago. It's 1 of those flavorings though, that requires shipment by ground now. Since I'm only 45 miles from WL, I had a friend pick it up while he was there picking up drums of stuff for the vape shop he works for. Don't know if I'd have ordered it elsewhere, out of FL, which would have required the UPS shipping though.
