Flooding on protank 2 after rebuild

So, I decided I'd try my hand at rebuilding my protank 2 head, and it worked, mostly. The head fires, and it burns nicely. However, it floods. Quite a bit. I used 30 gauge kanthal, wrapped with a toothpick and used part of a cotton ball for the wick. I put no flavor wick, thinking I didn't need it, but I'm reconsidering due to the flooding. The reason I'm considering the flavor wick is because I had a regular head from the packaging I had and I took the flavor wick out of that and now that head is flooding too. I can't find any solutions on youtube to help fix my problem, so I figured I'd ask here.

Any suggestions? I'm desperate to get my vape quality back to what it was, or even better if I can.

It is likely your flavor wick absence. Just use a little bit more cotton for your flavor wick. You want to make sure that you don't see any gaps around the wick holes. It doesn't have to be mashed tight or anything, but you do need a decent seal if you will since it's technically not really sealed.

I must have at least 4.5mm of silica in my Protank builds.

If I was to do one with cotton wool, I'd either make a really FAT wick, or have a "flavour" wick on top.

or it will leak.....

add a small, unrolled cotton flavor wick to the top. You want it to be snug when you put the post in, just not smashed solid. Also, usually a flavor wick works great right after you put it in, but it may flood after sitting for a night or too. this means your flavor wick is too small.
Learned through much trial and error.

When I wick my rebuilt kanger coils, I twist a piece of cotton ball very tight, thread it through so it's just snug, clip it even with the outer flat rim then stick a toothpick in the ends of the wick to fluff them up. The cotton should fill the holes like little clouds with the top post on. I never get flooding, gurgling or dry hits when I wick this way!

Thanks for all the tips everyone! I put a flavor wick in, which worked, and next time I rebuild I'll try what Btsmokincat suggested and fluff up the wick.

I am with bts, roll cotton tight and never had an issue if it's snug and clip the ends flat. From what you said I would recommend going to a 1/16 bit and try with that. Toothpick just little large for me and coils came up a little higher ohms for my taste IMO.

I would add the flavor wick made of cotton on the top of the coils.... Cotton absorbs juice nicely so if you don't use too much you won't get a tight draw. I rebuild with organic cotton and once you get a feel for how much to use you will be in for a new PT vaping experience.

I can guarantee, due to many many many experiments, that flavor wicks in a protank head actually mute flavor, especially with cotton ball wicks.

The trick is to figure out exactly how much wick you need through the center. If you get it just right, it wont flood and the flavor production will be awesome.

Personally I have given up on cotton ball wicks. After building hundreds, if not thousands, of coil heads I still get the wick wrong sometimes, which very simply annoys me. As a result, for protanks, I use peaches n cream ekru cotton yarn. It is consistent, so very little experimentation is required to find the perfect amount of wick for your protank heads.

I agree that it takes practice with cotton balls and if it doesn't feel exactly right to me, I'll pull it out and start all over. Mostly I get it right the first time.

When I first started rebuilding I went looking for some Peaches and Cream yarn at the local wal-mart but all they had was colored in stock. I didn't think it would be a good idea to vape using a pink wick. I'll have to go look again to see if I can get the right stuff.

Nataani, do you notice a difference between cotton balls and the yarn as far as flavor goes?

No noticeable flavor difference that I can tell.

However, in experiments I have done yarn does consistently wick slightly slower than the perfect cotton ball wick. So with relatively high ohm builds (anything over 1 ohm really) I don't think you will notice a difference. With sub ohm builds I have noticed a slight difference, but really, it is so slight that it could just be my imagination.

If walmart doesn't have ekru yarn available, just ask at customer service if they can get it. My local walmart got some for me when I asked.
