So I had an attempt on my credit/debt card earlier this month. Luckily my bank caught it and everything is ok. It seems like what these "companies" are doing is sending a small charge to your account to test the waters and then I guess they would drain it empty. The only reason I'm posting this on ECF is that there is a high chance that it was ecig vendor related. No way of tracing it back that I know of and this is NOT a blame on any vendor as chances are they got hacked...

Anyway the real reason for my post is to suggest the route I'm taking in the future with my online purchases. http://www.walmartmoneycard.com I went to wally world to check this out. Basically you load up the card at Wal-mart for $3 bucks and can then use it like an atm/credit card. They give you a temp card and you have to activate your account with some personal info either by phone or online.

There are some charges involved like the card is $3 a month, $3 every reload, $2 to use the atm to withdraw cash, $1 to view balance at an atm..Or you can view your balance online for free. The plus of this to me is that it is not related with my bank funds at all.

Just figured I would post this for people concerned with cc fraud as it seems to be pretty rampant. If I end up having any issues with this route I'll update this thread, but this seems like the safest thing for me to do.:2c:

WOW! That's pretty expensive.

A better way is what SC from SC (below) suggests. No additional charges, a different CC number for each vendor so if anyone tries to use it again it's easy to trace back to a specific vendor.

Some credit cards have an option to create a virtual account number for each transaction. You can set an amount limit and date. You just put your amount from the sales ticket and put in an expiration date. The account number can't be used again. Works great on line.
Yep. Mine is "Shop Safe" through my FIA credit card company. I understand Citi has something similar.

Chances are, YOU have some type of Malware on your computer. Keylogger/virus.

Get MAlware bytes anti-malware, and run that, you may be surprised. Norton, Mcaffee, and MOST popular anti-virus software does bot even scan for malware.
I installed Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware and came up clean. WHEW!!!

I would also suggest that you create another email account if you are going to set up accounts with companies, as the spam seems to follow. Also if you are asked and do provide a phone number use someone's number that you don't care too much for:) I made that mistake, but fortunately it`s on a magic jack line. I don't ever use it other than the rare occasion that I plan on talking for several hours to someone not with cingular.

I have the TrashMail - Disposable email addresses plug-in on my browser (Firefox) which I use all the time when placing orders. It gives me a limited-time-use email address (which is forwarded to my regular address) and an expiration date of 2 weeks (default, but can be changed).

So, not only can I tell who the vendor is if my virtual CC card is comprised I can also tell which vendor sells or gives away my email address.

My virtual account numbers just paid off. Placed an order in May using a virtual account number. In June someone tried to use it about 20 times and the credit card Company caught it every time. They notified me and I was able to track down the perpetrator.

I have dealt with dozens of e-cig vendors and been very pleased with their service. Sorry to say it was an e-cig vendor that tried to pull this off.

I'm glad that you found out who the perpetrator is. Is the company a registered supplier on ECF? If so, did you report it to ECF?

My bank credited the fraudulent charge, but I probably won't find out who the person (or company) is that did this.

Yes the company is a registered supplier on ECF. While I would love to divulge the name to everyone on this forum I have been advised not to until the credit card company resolves the matter. I certainly don't want to jeopardize the investigation.
I am just grateful to have a tool like the Virtual Account Number for buying things on the net. It worked like a champ for me.
