I'm looking into getting into rebuilding, but i had a few questions that i figured avid re-builders could answer...

About how often do you have to rebuild? or on average, about how many times can you use a coil before you need to rebuild? im sure that skill level and experience probably play into how long coils last, but is there an average lifespan for something like that? Also, do you find that using re-buildables outside of your home to be a nuisance to others? I try to treat my vapor as if it were cigarette smoke out of courtesy to others, and from the looks of the videos i have seen, rebuildable coils can produce some major vapor.

Thanks in advance for any input or sage advice!

I've never had a coil the pop on me during normal use. I've popped coils due to shorts during setting up a new build (ie genesis style tanks) and one due to a mech auto firing on me. I've always pulled my coils to try a new build before they've died on their own.

I don't understand the rebuildable comment being a nuisance question. If you mean do I think a cloud chasing setup to be inappropriate under certain situations I would agree. There are times when blowing huge clouds of vapor would probably be inappropriate. Having rebuildable tanks and rebuildable drippers separately is part of the fun. A Kayfun type tank can be used in more situations than a dripper. No reason to choose between the two. Get both.

It's the type of atomizer that matters, not the fact they are rebuildable.

Too many variables to give you an answer.
Type of coil, resistance, device used, type of liquid/nic level, frequency of use etc etc.

I am a fan of micro coils with cotton/yarn for wick. Very easy to just rewick when needed and just burn off any crud on the coil.

You can pull silica wick too depending on how you wrapped your coil but I find it to be more or a pain and I prefer cotton in general.

Usually when I am swapping coils it is not because the coil is toast but because I want to change impedance or coil style.

Yes a dripper with the right juice can chuck some serious clouds but those setups are intentionally built that way.

Personally I don't bring setups like that out in public but not because I dont want to offend anybody but it is a PITA compared to just taking a tank style atty out with me.

Not to mention for me cloud chasing is more of a novelty, something I do at home to mock my girlfriend and her protank.

Thanks bce22. I should have clarified my comment about vapor production: What i meant was do you use high vapor producing setups (like most of the rebuildable setups i have seen) in public, or just for private use? and i guess this question stems from my inexperience with rebuildables. i just figured that most home made coils would be vapor producing monsters. i guess that question isnt really pointed just at rebuildables as you pointed out. The info about the coils is very helpful. also, as someone new to vaping (10 weeks analog free!) i can totally get behind the "Why choose get both" advice. I am still very much in my "BUY ALL THE THINGS!!!" phase.:)

A coil can last months, it will need to be cleaned periodically when it gets build up on it but when that's done it's ready. The wick you will have to change more often.

An RBA vapes like any other topper whether your in public or not. If you want to make a cloud producer with lots of airflow then you can, it's all about the build and what you want from it. Some are more travel friendly than others as far as potential leaking but other than that do your research and find out what's the best one for you and run with it.

You'll probably rewick a good coil 10+ times before you recoil.

And you rewick maybe every few days or so , right?

Yup, I go through about a tank each day (around 4ml) and try to rewick after every 2-3 tank refills. It may be different for you (as I know some people go longer without rewicking, and some people rewick after every tank), but for me, that seems to be the point where flavor starts to drop off.
