Freshly wicked cotton...

Just changed my new cotton in my doge 2 rda clone and it seems like every time i change the cotton, it takes time for it to "break in"? I dont know how to explain.. like when its fresh the juice kinda tastes perfumey and after a few days its good. Are there any good tips on how to wick/juice so i get pass the new cotton taste?

PS: I use organic cotton and i boil it so its not the "cotton taste" i think.

I get the same thing from a fresh wicking or build. I never found a way around it. Maybe use some very strong tasting juice at first? IDK. I find I can taste a new coil for longer than a new wick. I use regular A-1 Kanthal and KGD cotton.

How deep is the well on a Doge? I dont own one, but I use organic cotton, and on a guilt purchase Ive been trying cotton bacon, in my Dark Horse. When I change wicks I dry fire a few times before putting the new wick in to burn off the gunk, just like Im sure everyone else does. Once Ive put the new wick in I put about 3 drops on the wick on each side of the coil and 2 drops directly on the coil. I then set the wick in the well the way I like it using tweezers to position it just right. By this time much of the juice has soaked into the wick and on the coils so I drip more juice on the coils until there is excess in the well, not alot, just a little starting to pool.

I have never "tasted the cotton" on either the organic or the the cotton bacon. I dont boil my cotton either. Maybe its just me.

I do exactly what Darth does at least weekly. Dry burn, dust it off, add new cotton, soak it good and enjoy.

Never any bad taste. The coil I am running now is about 6 weeks old and going strong. If it "aint" broke don't fix it. That's how I roll.

What type of cotton are you using? I personally use the Japanese cotton pads without any adverse flavor.

A lot of people say this, although I don't taste it myself. AFAIK, there's no way around except switching to rayon.

I have used standard cotton balls for a few years now and only experienced this phenomenon for the first time a month or so ago.
It seems that some balls have that taste and some don't, the best way to avoid it is to smell the cotton balls before you make your wick, if it smells chemically then don't use it.
I have found both (smelly + non-smelly) in the same bag of cotton balls.

I quit using Japanese cotton for that reason. The cotton bacon is my go to now. It wicks faster, holds more juice, and only the first couple of puffs have any kind of break in flavor.

Yep, I'm with Sgt. Rock... I bought the 500' box straight from Sally's... it was $12, and I'll never have to buy wicking material again. Neither will several other people I know.... switching to rayon is definitely one of those decisions that I've never regretted... check out the thread and decide for yourself.

But just know that it is not like cotton at all... with cotton you just want it barely snug inside the coil because it will swell when you add juice. With rayon you want it really tight when dry because it will collapse and shrink down when wet.

Good advice burn off the gunk and saturate well., Suggest when you fire it up start at lower, wattage and work up. ,Good luck

I used to get a cotton taste for the first day or few hours;
used to just put a strong flavor in to overpower it sometimes.

Since I started rinsing first in a strainer by pouring hot water through them and letting them dry, I don't seem to be getting a taste anymore

I only get a strange taste if I use too much cotton. The trick is not stuffing the coil with too much cotton. If I put it in where it fills the coil, but still VERY EASILY, pulls back and forth through the coil, then I get no strange taste.

Yup, cotton expands, rayon shrinks. Hence, understuff a cotton wick and overstuff a rayon wick.

I went to rayon last year and have never looked back.

I would say it is normal, I get the same on fresh builds. It takes a few toots for the cotton and coil to produce full flavor and vapor.

I've used rayon (cellucotton) ever since I started using rebuildables, and it, too, has an odd taste the first 5-10 puffs or so- there's no way around it. But it goes away pretty quick; maybe two fills (in an RDA; half a tank in an RBA) and you're good to go. Honestly, though, I'm gonna try Japanese organic this weekend, when I get my vapemail in.

Thanks for all the help! i changed my wick again and put a little less cotton this time, and after a few hours i'd say its pretty good!!
I guess with cotton less is more.. imma try rayon when i run out of the KGD i have left
