Hey all,

I'm a non-cigarette smoker who has done the occasional hookah. I saw a deal for the VMOD XL from vapage.com for half off so I jumped on that. I basically skipped the whole e-cig step.

Since I didn't order any e-liquid, I went to my local Totally Wicked store, but they only had premade stuff with nicotine. Since I don't smoke and I didn't want any nicotine, I bought the stuff to mix it myself. So basically I skipped the premade e-liquid step and went straight to mixing my own. I got the VG mix and am still messing with it because the taste is a bit off. I think I may need to add some water or something.

Anyways, I am now looking to get an e-cigarette for something a bit more portable. The cloud I get from the VMOD XL is pretty awesome and there isn't much of a throat hit which is important to me. I bought a regular and disposable Xhale O2 "E-Hookah" for comparison. There isn't much of a cloud compared to the VMOD, but it isn't too bad. The disposable had much less of a throat hit than the regular. So basically I have learned that I want an e-cig that:

-Has a good vapor cloud
-Does not have a strong throat hit
-Is about the same size as the "E-Hookah"
-Does not look like a classic cigarette (so I prefer black in color with an LED other than red or orange)
-Probably an automatic battery, but I'm open

I was thinking about going for a 306 or 510, but am completely torn between the two. I've gone through the guides and watched/read many reviews, but am still unsure. I think somewhere it said that 510 had a stronger throat hit which is a minus. My biggest concern is that I do not want that strong hit. Should I just stick with my VMOD? Any suggestions? Thanks

The Vmod is a great device, so I would stay with that for now. Throat hit has more to do with the amount of nicotine in juice, so if you want zero or low throat hit stay with zero or low nic levels. MADVAPES HAS some really inexpensive zero nic juices, like $12.00 for 50 ml, might want to check it out.

Also since you can adjust your voltage on your Vmod, turn it down to about 3.6 volts if you desire even less throat hit. If you really want something with good battery life and is portable, go with an EGO TWIST, Varible volt device; at least 900 MaH or greater for good battery life. 510 is more a description of the threading of the device than the throat hit provided. Low resistance cartos produce more vapor. I would say go with a 2.0 ohm carto to start.

Throat hit primarily comes from nicotine

I appreciate the responses. I hadn't realized that the hit was from nicotine. The products I bought were supposed to be nicotine free, but the vapor felt pretty hot when it got my throat.

I couldn't figure out how to adjust the voltage and it didn't mention anything about it in the manual. Maybe that is on a different model.

I'm strictly using VG for my mix. 80% VG and 20% concentrate. It has a bit of a weird taste that I'm guessing is from too much VG. Would adding water counter act that?

Is there a reason that you're only using VG? If I remember correctly, VG has a tendancy to mute the flavor a bit. I DIY all my liquids, and they come out at about 70/30 PG/VG, mostly because I've found that I like working with PG better, it doesn't stick to everything it touches like VG. If I were you, I would grab some PG (Which you can order online from most of the DIY places, Madvapes carries some straight PG too) and try mixing it down a bit with that.

If that's not in your budget, or you don't want to use PG for some reason, add a bit of distilled water or Pure Grain Alcohol (think Everclear) to your mix to thin it out a bit. Don't do too much, add slowly, couple drops and then shake it up and try again.

Also, 510 is just the connection identifier. It just means that the PV has a female 510 connector and the Atty/Carto/etc has a male 510 connector. 306 is a model number for a type of Atomizer.

I'm not sure what your price range is, but I use a Silver Bullet from AltSmoke, with a kick unit in it, and a rebuildable atomizer. Don't look at rebuildables...save something to explore later on :) The kick is a variable wattage device, it lets you set what wattage that you want the vapor to come out at, and it handles the rest. The formula is Volts X Volts / Resistance. Example: My kick is set at 8 watts, so I get 8 watts if I'm using a 1.5ohm atty or a 4 ohm atty.

The reason that I suggest this is that you can get a Silver Bullet, use it at 3.7v for a while and if you decide that you want to add a bit more kick to it (haha, see what I did there?) you can buy an extension tube and a kick, and wallah...you've got a VW device. The Bullet is a bit large for pocketability though, I use it primarily at home and in the car, I have an AltSmoke Alpha for while I'm at work.

Either way, hope you find something to your liking,
Cheers,
-X

@X: I'm just using VG because it was recommended to me when I went to my local Totally Wicked. I believe they said it has more vapor and is easier on the throat. As far as my budget goes, I'm trying to stay within $60 or so since I have the VMOD and Xhale.

@Yves: The taste isn't chemical. I think it's just an after taste, most likely from the VG. It's a bit sweet, but doesn't really seem like it's from my concentrates. If I had to narrow it down, I'd say it's close to a fog machine since the juice is pretty much the same

The VG is what gives the vapor and the PG the throat hit. the water or grain alcohol is used to thin juice out so it doesn't clog your atty as fast. It does sound like your flavoring amt is a bit high but since I don't mix my own I am not sure. This section will help you with that part DIY E-Liquid. I would say that almost any 510 or 808 connection would give you the vapor you are looking for. Smokeless Image has some nice batteries that come in lots of colors and colored ends too. They also have cartos that are prefilled and you can get zero nic. You can keep refilling them with your own juice. They also have blank cartos if you just want to do your own juice. They also have their own subforum here on ECF suppliers

If you want a throat hit but not the nic, you can always add in some pepper flavor, menthol, or cinnamon, also it is said pg will give more of a throat hit than vg, so you could do a 50/50 blend or whatever blend you want to help add in throat hit. The VMod is not variable voltage, but you can use the Kick with the vmod, there are youtube videos on how to do this, in order to make the vmod have a higher voltage.

Probably a better idea to start a new thread for this, but since I don't follow rules well....

When most people start vaping, they'll go through a period of 'can't taste anything' that lasts for a week or so, and will come back a few times over the first year. It's natural, it's your taste buds healing from the analogs, it will pass. Just make sure that she's drinking lots of water, that helped me when I went through it.
