So I started vaping a couple years ago and up until about a week ago, I've been using Egos with carto tanks. I've always been really interested in the world of mods and RBA tanks so I decided it was finally time to upgrade. I ended up with a Caravela clone and a Kayfun 3.1 clone both from EHPro. Anyways, it's been quite a rough transition for me and I'm in dire need of some explanations and answers.

So here's what I'm working with:
1. EHPro Caravela 18650
2. EHPro Kayfun 3.1
3. 2x Panasonic NCRs and 2x Sony VTC4s
4. Punched cartomizers (that I've been using on my Egos)
5. Artemus Locking DCT.

So what happened was, I built the Kayfun (first RBA build ever). It worked and fit perfectly with the mid-sized pin (Caravela isn't telescoping so they give you 3 different-sized pins). But the build was a horrible vape. I'm going to need more practice and watch more vids on that. But on to the actual issues....

I decided I was going to go back to my carto tanks until I had enough practice building coils and wicks on the Kayfun. This is where I ran into some serious problems!

I wanted to use my carto tank on my Caravela. It doesn't fit right on there at ALL. It came with 3 different sized pins and all of them are too short except for the longest pin (which is a tad too long). It leaves a gap and I can't screw the top cap of the Caravela in all the way. But I did get it to fire after messing around with it.

Anway, the first couple times I used the Sony VTC4s with the carto tank, they heated up so much that the mod started to get hot and I had to remove the battery from the mod. Happened with both my VTC4s (I did it twice in a row). They were pretty frickin' hot. They also burned out 2 of my Ikenvape 2 ohm cartos instantly. This leads me to think that the cartos might not be the right connection for this mod. They do fit kinda funny on there; they fit perfectly on my Egos though.

The weird thing is, is that I messed with it enough that I got one of my cartos working fine on it. Although there's still the gap and it doesn't feel right on there, but it fires fine and the batteries aren't heating up.

Anyway, can anyone explain what's going on here? Do I need some type of connection to get my cartos to work better on the Caravela? As I said, the Kayfun fits flawlessy but I still want to use carto tanks on this mod when I want. I thought the cartos, the Kayfun, and the Caravela were all 510 connections. I'm so confused, lol. Any help would totally rock! :)

I don't have a Caravela, but I Googled and found this video. Thought it might help.

When you use a mechanical mod you are the only safety system you've got between you and a potentially dangerous situation. Regulated devices have all kinds of protection built in; over current, shutdown due to shorts (like a fuse), over discharge, polarity reversal and switch activated too long are the typical ones. Mechs have none of this built in.

When a battery quickly gets hot in use, you've got a short. That's serious and you should not use the mod or the atty again until you figure out what caused the short and fix it. These batteries get hot fast (as you know) and if they get hot enough they will vent gas. That is nasty stuff and can get dangerous. Trying it again without understanding what caused the problem the first time is going to likely lead to the same dangerous result happening again.

They also burned out 2 of my Ikenvape 2 ohm cartos instantly. This leads me to think that the cartos might not be the right connection for this mod. They do fit kinda funny on there; they fit perfectly on my Egos though.

If the cartos burned out, they were probably shorting internally. The connection to the mod would not have had any influence on this. A check of resistance of the cartos before use would have settled this.

The weird thing is, is that I messed with it enough that I got one of my cartos working fine on it. Although there's still the gap and it doesn't feel right on there, but it fires fine and the batteries aren't heating up.

Glad you were not hurt!

Whenever I've had an issue with one of my mechanical mods I stopped vaping them, took the time to review the situation, gather my thoughts and make a plan on how I would troubleshoot the thing safely. This typically involves using my digital multimeter to eliminate issues with the coil, the atty, the 510 connection and the switch on the mod.

I'm sorry I can't be more specific on your problem, but it really is a process of elimination. Hang out in the Rebuildable Atomizer Systems forum for a while and you will learn a lot about this stuff.
