Making sure the wick is down is second nature to me. With most of my setups I can do it blind thanks to engravings.
What is not second nature (yet), is vaping a KFL without putting a finger over the air intake. Gets annoying real fast
It's all a matter of habit. However, if you have to gangsta-tilt your gennie, you may have a wicking issue. Unless I make an effort to vape mine vertically, which is very odd anyways, all it takes is wick facing down to keep it fed.
On gennies you need wick facing down. On drippers you need air intake facing not down (most of the time) to keep them from leaking. KFLs need their air intake unfingered. All setups has their quirks.
