I just got a genny clone and some mesh, I think I did everything right, watched several videos, well oxidized, the coil glows correctly with 4 wraps. It seems to be wicking just fine, it chucks vapor like mad, I'm really impressed with the vapor. It just tastes like crap, unbearably bad.

Will the metallic taste go away with time or do you think I did something wrong?

The cotton I use in my rba has a slight bad taste on a fresh build but it goes away after a few tokes, I'm hoping this is the same but I have bin toking this genny for bit and it still tastes like metallic .... I cant put up with the taste for much longer.

Its a solid mesh wrap, I honestly don't know the mesh size.

BTW my fingers are killing me from trying to get that mesh the right size, It took me 45 min. I assume you veterans must have calluses on your fingers like guitar players. LOL

If you rolled for 45 minutes I feel like your wick is too tight. Just take some of the mesh off. I like to see a little hole in the center for myself. Usually about the size of a paper clip.

I've only tasted metallic flavor when I had a short though. Got a pic of the coil burning?

I cleaned it with water then PGA and let it dry thoroughly before using, I don't see any hotspots on the coil, it seems to be firing evenly.

Some of the videos I watched said it is best to have a solid core so I did that, Now I read on here a few people make it like a straw, Ill try that next, this one is not getting any better. I have one piece of mesh left. I'll rebuild later today and see if I do any better.

Thanks for your help so far.

I like a solid wick, flavor and wicking seems best. I use a 40%VG/60%PG blend and #450 mesh. It sounds to me like it could be one of three problems:
Your coil could be too loose on your wick. I try to get them quite tight
Your mesh might not be washed good. I wash mine w dish sap and hot water before i even start
Your wicks diameter could be too big. I like to make my wicks diameter slightly smaller than the hole. it should be wobbly, not tight
I hate trying to find the hotspots and shorts, so I've taken to using 3mm hollow ekowool tubing sleeved on top portion of wick. Lay your coils tight and even and it should taste awesome every time, no burn in

IMO the ekowool hat is the same as any other silica atty. Even though there is ss under it, to me its like turning a genny into a vivi. I love the sharp flavor of the mesh. If you can see any gap between the coil and the mesh it will not heatsink and create a hotspot effect. Also try to stay above .8 ohms. If you are using 28 gauge put on another wrap. Don't throw that wick out either, just unroll it, and cut some off or in half if you used a whole sheet. Pulse it while its dry to see where your problems are. Remember to wiggle the coils where the hotspots are, and make sure the top coil isn't too tight. It is worth it. I have ss in my Taifun GT now. I could have had it working in two minutes with silica, but I chose to take 20 min to achieve true flavor.

Hopefully you didn't forget to fold that last little edge of mesh. Those pesky little ends can sure make a seemingly nice even glowing coil taste bad due to hot spots when juiced. The previous comments about coil to mesh contact being too loose or too tight somewhere also match symptoms described.
