I picked up a Reo grand off the classies today. Great condition except that it must have been used with a licorice vape. I pulled it apart and have been trying to get the smell out.

So far I have soaked it in hot soapy water, then in ever-clear, and used baking soda/vinegar on it. The feed tube was not connected when I got it so that went out and it came with an extra one so I will replace it.

Any suggestions on cleaning? It is still pretty strong. I may have to order a rebuild kit for it to replace the contact since it is covered in a silicone and I think that is where the smell is trapped at this point. Even the delrin parts smell like licorice still.

You could try putting it in some ground coffee.

Usually the odor gets into the gasket, o-ring, and tubing. Since you have worked on those areas and it is still present other measures might be needed.

The silicone on the contact is important and needs to be there so the metal will not short out. Replacement might take care of the problem.

Do you have a juice in hand that you wouldn't mind wasting 1 ml and you actually like? Part of getting rid of strong odors is, instead of erasing it, overriding it with another. Putting the tubing and cap aside as that is changeable, and trying to avoid replacing all of the parts, take the tubing off and drip your favorite juice on the gasket and juice well. Blow it out as you hold a paper towel on the gasket end inside the REO so that the juice doesn't go everywhere. Do this a couple of times (3-4 times) and check again. It'd be a good idea to, before blowing the juice out, letting it sit for at least 1 minute for it to really soak in.

I'm very rigorous when it comes to changing flavors. Even though I don't like it, I can taste even the faint remains of a not even strong flavor if I don't give it a good cleaning. So give that a try if you can, and let us know how it goes.

I'm going to work on it again today, I think I will run out and get some efferdent if the "erasing it" does not work. It was so strong yesterday I could smell it before I walked into the room it was sitting in. Anise is strong....

Nerek, on the coffee grounds wet or dry? Is not a bad idea since coffee has a strong smell as well.

I'll yet you all know.

I tried some anise based juice thought I like it and filled a bottle. An hour later realized I hated it!

Gave the Reo several baths and soakings in PGA. I could still taste it a week later. Replaced the bottle, bottle top and tube and gave it a full bath again. It's gone now and that was only from an hour of use. You might need to replace all plastic and silicone if it had prolonged anise exposure.

Dry! Just put it in a ziploc with the grounds and let is stay overnight.

I'll try that tonight. So far, nothing has worked. I've used the efferdent about 4 times, it helped but not much. Using another e-liquid on it didn't affect it at all.

I hope I don't need a rebuild kit, but it is looking like it. It's much less than when I got it but it is still strong. I actually wanted to give this one to my wife but not looking like that will be an option at this point. I ordered her a new blemished already to bring her up to 3, this was to be her #4.

Anyone know how much a full Maine Spa Treatment is?

Sorry to say, with some juices, your only option will be to remove and replace all plastic/rubber parts. This is why people who use juices like Pluid have a dedicated setup. Once it's in there, it doesn't leave.

My current struggle with a fierce cinnamon based liquid. I'm truly defeated trying to get rid of it. So glad Reo has replacement parts frequently in stock :D

I don't know, but you could PM redeyedancer to find out. If you can't get the odor out, the best way to fix it is have the parts replaced. :)

I had the exact same thing happen to me no more than two weeks ago. I picked up a mini 2.0 in the classies, I swear it smelled like the person ran a mix of skunk and anise through it. I ended up buying a rebuild kit, and replacing everything that could be easily replaced on it. Soaked it in soapy water, dunking the whole thing in 93% isopropyl, and scrubbing the whole thing with DAWN dish soap. Not even a trace of that smell. He actually sent me two AW 18490s that are sitting in my garage because they stank so bad. Good luck!

That is so funny! For me, somehow, when this word follows this word, it takes on a whole new pronunciation and meaning . . . . .

The coffee grounds are working pretty good. I covered it in grounds last night and this morning it is much, much better. I put it back in the grounds for the day, going to see how it works over time. If it does not clear up in a few days, I'll order a rebuild kit. Bummer though, with what I paid for it and the rebuild kit I could have just about bought a new one.

The one thing that makes me scratch my head...how did they get e-liquid up in there, enough to get the scent to be so strong...

I always recommend new from Rob. New blems are the way to go.

Because juice flows thru a REO, it's much different from buying a battery holder.

Unless you know the seller, buy from Rob. Your not going to save enough money buying used to justify dealing with these kind of issues. Even worse when it costs more because of rebuilds / trip to Rob than a new blem.

I have learned that lesson now. Fortunately, if I take into account the spare parts he through in, rebuilding it will be less than a blemished.

I just ordered a rebuild kit.

Coffee works great for taking odor out but some odors still linger. I've left a few REOs, metal and wood, in a closed container, with course ground coffee, for over a month and still had some lingering smell issues. Coffee is great for fridges, freezers, etc., in an open container, too..

I, too, prefer getting new from REO unless it is a rare one or the price is so ridiculously low that even purchasing rebuild kit cuts a bubch of money off a new price.

On lingering odors...... I can only do plain or butterscoth based. This is from years of trying hundreds of flavors. I get a range of reaction, to most other flavors ranging from headaches to nauses to even lips/mouth/tongue/throat swelling and even chest congestion and pain. Bummer but reality. The worst lingering, for me, taste but not allergy issu e s is any stale tobacco previously used. Sounds weird but this past weekend I was busy, upstairs where my juice cooler storage is. Juice, in Mini ran out. I quickly located a FSUSA multi shot Cherry in cooler and put only < 0.2 ml in bottle. It was barely tolerable and slight lips swelling. I've since refilled the bottle several times with my strongest butterscotch and the cherry is still dominating. Time for a partial breakdown and almost scalding hot water flush. May go the efferdent soak, too. Workhorse Silver Mini 2.0 had a good bath, pin filing last week, prior to the cherry. Bad timing as I'm needing it for some grungy work and hate to be without it for a day.
