1.) Right now it is on my own server, which I have been using for the past 6 or 7 years and I've not had much anything happen to the data on it. I am planning to make constant backups of the database of this thing, just in case something does happen. I will mail it out to a few people or something to make sure it's safe and if something does happen there is a way to get things back up.

2.) It looks like the lion's share of things will have to be redone from scratch right now.

Yes, I will provide as much as I can to this effort... Thankfully, all the illustrations are safe and ready to go in both Images and PDF's. That is how I will do all of them in the future as well (Both formats). I will start scrounging around to see what online archives I can retrieve data from as well.

It will get done with the help of the family. It may take a little while to build the info back to where it was, but it will be there.

One thing I would like to see added is a model Specific Tips\Tricks section

I think Zor and silentt said that they could help on this urba. What happened was a really disaster. Does that happened to all wiki or just to the GG wiki?

so far it looks like we just need to get the content up to scratch really. I think everything regarding the installation went pretty well, and sorting out a few things to make things very pretty is a second priority, but that is easy and just needs some time. Like putting a nice logo on the top left corner of the Wiki, figuring out what to do with the main index page, etc. it's not all that hard, since I have some LAMP experience myself. The hard part is the content really.

Everything else like the backup strategy, etc. I'm quite sure I can figure out.

I managed to save some pages from the original GG wiki from the google-cache, but without any images.
So we have at least the content of the text of this pages.

page cache from 9. Juli 2011 23:39:53

GG Wiki index page
AFS_v3
AVS
AVS_v3
GGT
GGTS_Serial_Numbers
GG_Products_in_Development_and_Status

GG_SuperSlim
GG_SuperSlim_Serial_Numbers
Russian
Russian_AFS_v2
Russian_AVS
Russian_GGTB
Russian_GGTS-1

Russian_GG_Slim

I believe the "older" pages aren't in that cache because they may have not been viewed since a couple of time.

I had to rename the zip-file to an extension which allowed me to upload ;)

Does this help for the rebuild?

I would try to use some info on the .zip gredie posted, on the ggwiki as a personal exercise (i am learning how to use Mediawiki). I am now checking extensions and security related things / configuration. After that, i will post in case somebody want an account.

I used sqlite as the Mediawiki database on my installation (on Debian), so it would be easier to backup it (and faster). There are some ways to mirror a wiki server, but -for what i have read- it is not a very easy task (requires rsync, crons, etc), i think the easiest way is to maintain / make backups of the Mediawiki database, but i will continue reading.

the OAI extension looks fairly easy to use and implement, plus it's database independent, so that's good because even someone just running a simple server at home should be able to mirror it. I am running mine on MySQL, cuz it's a shared virtual hosting and that's the only option I have.

The info in the Zip I haven't looked at yet, but thanks for the work! It will be useful, but will need extra formatting to put it into proper MediaWiki syntax. Google cache doesn't let you get the edit field info from the pages which is a bit of a shame.

Ariel, just a backup of the mediawiki database will not do the whole job. As i know e.g. images were not stored in the database.
You would end up making a database backup and a backup of the data. After import these backups to a second mediawiki you have to modify links and pointer to get it working.
And for a regular backup, copy, import procedure you'll need rsync and/or cron anyway and this tools are very easy to handle and a standard in linux.

Your are right, synchronizing wiki's between to server is complex, but mirroring from a main-server to a secondary read-only server is much easier.

If you're interested, there is a description how to install extensions for a pragmatic sync:
Mediawiki/OAI_mirror/pragmatic_synchronisation

If we want two wiki servers for redundance, on both of them mediawiki has to be configured in a similar way. For the case Urban is using mysql on his server it would be better when you use that also to avoid export/import problems.

Sorry for the long writing, i just want to help finding a stable solution with minimum and easy maintenance.

Fine, when the OAI extension is database independent, didn't know that. But sure it has to be, this was was one of the ideas behind.
- Whatever this makes Ariel to keep his sqllite :)

It brings us just the content, no formatting, pictures or diagrams. But i think it will be more comfortable with cut&paste than writing the whole content again.

The bad news are, i couldn't find all pages. English pages with the first GG models like Grant are missing and a few of the russian pages. Imeo or other GG veterans will have to help with their memory.
At least we have the page with serial numbers :p
