All American telecom companies suck -- cable, satellite, mobile, etc. The trick is to find that sucks the least in the area that you live in. I'm amazed at the speeds and service Asian and European providers give for half the price or less of what American providers charge.
Not only them but the cell phone companies. I refuse to get one of those smart phones.

The price of cable and satellite TV in America is inflated due mostly to Disney. All their channels come as a package deal to the providers, and they own a lot of channels (like all the ESPNs). The prices are not going down in our lifetimes.

Sore subject for me, I only have the choice between Dish and DirectTV (no cables here). Both are... really expensive.

Been working on a spreadsheet for the last three hours. Generally speaking, writers suck at spreadsheets. Even though my father was an accountant, I'm horrible at them. I can actually make functional and good-looking spreadsheets but I am SLOW. Also, my eyes are so tired at looking at numbers. They're definitely getting cheerier as I type this post. They love letters, words, and punctuations. Numbers...not so much.

I actually disagree. Disney is a small part of a larger problem. The bigger issue is that there isn't enough consumer choice. Most consumers are served by cable or satellite. In major cities, telecoms offers a third choice like AT&T U-Verse or Verizon Fios. There's no incentive to lower prices or improve service. That's why I love what Google is doing with Google Fiber. It's offering television with Internet speeds that make cable/phone companies look like losers, AND the price is lower.

Telecom companies are making huge profits in America by charging a premium price and doing the bare minimum for service.

That is true. I have some friends that are moving into a neighborhood with Google Fiber and they couldn't be happier. I'll admit to being quite jealous, although their property value/taxes are more than double for less than half the space. I can't believe they refuse to watch or own a TV, what a waste.

Believe it or not, our government is largely to blame for the high cost of cable/satellite TV. They pretty much let the industry run itself, in a very unethical and corrupt manor. The reason I blame Disney (mostly because of ESPN) is because we are stuck paying for a bunch of really expensive channels whether we want them or not. It's like being forced to buy combo meals when all you want is the drink. The Cable Bill's Too High. Here's Why - Forbes

I wouldn't kill for Google Fiber...but I think I'd maim. :)

You nailed it on the first sentence. The government has allowed most consumers to be served by a duopoly. It's awful. One of the reasons I love Google Fiber is that it's disruptive and exposes the traditional telecom companies as frauds. It's funny how cable companies are only accelerating bandwidth plans rapidly only in areas that are also served by Google Fiber.

As a tech nerd, it's frustrating. Internet services have the potential to be amazing with more bandwidth, less throttling, and no caps. It's also frustrating as a gamer and someone that works with video.

Well - Here is the start of a New Day . . .

So - A Good "MorinNite" - "Tree People" . . .
SmileySummertree.gif

As for the discussion of Cable/Dish TV . . . Personally, Even with just - Basic antenna service for over the air stations used to be $12 (No Box and you had to search for the channel since they were not on the same channel) and for basic Cable was over $30 at the time, I gave up Cable TV quite some time ago (about 10 years now). AND - Although I did miss some TV Shows that I really enjoyed on some Cable Stations - there really was nothing that great for me to watch that I was willing to pay that kiind of money for, especially when I found out I could find what I really wanted to see at a later date on the Internet.

More importantly, now with HDTV I get more stations then I can or want to see over the air (45 + Channels in My area) - then include a Smart HDTV and even Roku for steaming (like Netflix/HBOGo that Thankfullly someone gives "Me" as an ongoing Birthday presents), I have so many different options available to me - SO WHO NEEDS CABLE . . . BTW: Just as an FYI - DO "You" know that although Cable Companies say "You" are getting HDTV (when You pay extra for it) through their services, most of the time - "You're" Not . . . Just Sayin' . . . ;)

Now - One more thing, has anyone thought about the fact that until Cable TV actually came around, not only were the majority of us satisfied with what TV we received and got over the air - We actually never had a huge problem with getting reception in most areas, especially in the larger markets . . . AND - That the worse over the air reception became, the more and more Micro-wave antennas for Cable TV (and Cell Phones/etc.) were being put up . . . AGAIN - Just something to think about . . . ;)

I have cable/dish, primarily for two things...
Sports and Children's programming. There are only a few things that I really enjoy that are not available on Netflix other than those. (Most of the children's programs are pretty crappy on Netflix)
I also tried the HD antenna and got, approximately bupkiss!

I know I'm getting gouged with the cable company, but like jac said, the children's programming is superior. With an 8 year old, having good children's programming is important to me. Plus, I love my syndicated TV. I also have Netflix, but it really doesn't have everything I want to watch, and it's only hooked up through the PS3 in the livingroom. If I want to watch TV while lounging in my bedroom, gotta have the cable. Plus, I think I'd be a sad girl if I couldn't watch Spike TV, re-runs of House NCIS Bones etc., Breaking Bad, ESPN, SCIFI,..... um, I think I watch too much TV.

i hate that we have cable. i felt swindled into it. i was completely content with just having internet service (which was $30 to start) but i cam home a few months back to some dude hooking up cable, evidently, wifey purchased a cable package from a door to door salesman!! this sonofagun goes door to door praying on housewives while the spouse is at work. out bill is now about $140 a month and we only use it for nick jr (levi loves yo gabba gabba) and cartoon network and yes, amc. i really wanna ditch it.... but wifey doesnt want to....
id like to cancel the service and sign back up to get promotional pricing for another 6 months and just keep doing that (as i have been advised to do), just havent yet....
