I know I'm getting gouged with the cable company, but like jac said, the children's programming is superior. With an 8 year old, having good children's programming is important to me. Plus, I love my syndicated TV. I also have Netflix, but it really doesn't have everything I want to watch, and it's only hooked up through the PS3 in the livingroom. If I want to watch TV while lounging in my bedroom, gotta have the cable. Plus, I think I'd be a sad girl if I couldn't watch Spike TV, re-runs of House NCIS Bones etc., Breaking Bad, ESPN, SCIFI,..... um, I think I watch too much TV.

* COUGH * COUGH * All of thse are available somewhere on the Internet/Netflix/Redbox . . . AND - as for Childrens programing there is an HDTV Station called "Qubo" ( Qubo | TV Programming for Kids ) that is available with some interesting shows, including repeats of some older ones after Midnight that "We" saw as children . . . Just Sayin' . . . ;)

i hate that we have cable. i felt swindled into it. i was completely content with just having internet service (which was $30 to start) but i cam home a few months back to some dude hooking up cable, evidently, wifey purchased a cable package from a door to door salesman!! this sonofagun goes door to door praying on housewives while the spouse is at work. out bill is now about $140 a month and we only use it for nick jr (levi loves yo gabba gabba) and cartoon network and yes, amc. i really wanna ditch it.... but wifey doesnt want to....
id like to cancel the service and sign back up to get promotional pricing for another 6 months and just keep doing that (as i have been advised to do), just havent yet....

Fair Warning: "YOU" Better Do It Soon - before "You're" locked into that contract, since usually you only have 30 days . . .Just Sayin' . . . ;)

AND - Nothing against "Wifey" - but JEESSS, what is she thinking (or not thinking ) with all that money being spent on cable that "You" actually could be putting away for "Levi's" Education . . . Another - Just Sayin' . . .;)

we are in agreement. i was boarderline livid when i came home to her spending our little monies (and take into account shes not working, just doing babysitting) to commit to an unnecessary and expensive service. this was about 8 months ago, give or take. it is month to month, so we can cancel. however its been recommended that we cancel and resubscribe every 6 months to take advantage of thier deals/offers for 1/2 price -yadda-yadda-yadda. our bill is crazy, i am perfectly happy with just the web, we have digital bunny ears for local stations.....

as far as saving for Levis college, i am trying to set up an account with my father that invests in mutual funds, a money-market acct? i am saving up for the initial $1000 investment, which i think (but am not sure) he will match. the ill do 20-40 a month (if they allow such small deposits) until he is ready to go to school

Bravo, LD.. Bravo!
Thank youse :)
I looked at some projections with my pops, who is much more knowledgeable in such matters. with an average 10% annual growth over a long term, i could have ~70-100k in his college fund in 17 years as long as i make regular deposits. (and deposit any misc. monies he gets from bdays, xmas, festivus). And i would add more whenever i get a bonus or have a successful show/event.

This is a priority, and very important to start asap.

eta: i really dont want Levi to have to take out loans. I am still repaying mine and will be for 30 years...

Exactly! It is a really important thing to do. and the sooner you start the better. I also want to start a retirement fund, similarly set up with a longer range. However i make very little money, and am the only one really working in mi casa, so my deposits would be really small. But i find it well worth the contribution, and it really on means eating out 1 or 2 times less a month, its an easy sacrifice :)

Oh so worth it!!!. Start both and then sit and make a budget and make it plain that that is what you have to live on!

Good luck!

Cable/Satellite is a necessary evil for boxing fans. You can't follow the sport live without it. Plus, you need premium cable since HBO and Showtime have exclusives with the top boxers. And for huge events, it means shelling out $60-$70 for pay-per-view fights.

Last fight I ordered was Lennox Lewis vs Rachmon... how long ago was that?

we are on day 3 of rain. There wasn't even a break in the rain to walk the dog today. Usually it just spits a bit of rain here in the desert, just enough to dirty your car. We've been under flood warnings since yesterday, but thankfully no flooding at our house. Part of the interstate was flooded yesterday which made a huge commuter mess. My heart goes out to CO, b/c they are getting deluged with rain.
I can't imagine 11 inches of rain in day. We don't get that much rain in a yr here.

When I lived in "the big city", I didn't even own a TV. I streamed everything via internet. I can't stream video over the internet where I live now. No Netflix or anything like it. Living with a disabled person that has poor eyesight, there has to be some sort of TV to watch or somebody's going to go scooters. Even with a 30 foot antenna with a 6 foot sprawling top, I still struggled to get half of the over-the-air stations. I took that thing down after the satellite dish came, lightning rods kinda freak me out... metal roof, wooden house, no water pump when the electricity is out...

Missing out on all TV will eventually leave a person clueless to popular culture references. Most TV (especially "reality" shows) is a waste of time, but some of it is really good. IMO, the best stuff winds up on DVD eventually. I have the patience for that, but avoiding all forms of video seems pretty snooty to me. I know people like that, and the books they read... It takes all kinds, so the saying goes...
