This is my first post so please bear with me. I'm planning on switching to a mechanical mod from the mvp2 with protank 2's. I have a general idea of the difference between mechanical and vv/vw. I've read and bookmarked all kinds of battery safety and ohms law posts. I'm used to vaping with a 1.5 ohm coil and so I plan to build one on a kayfun lite which will go on the mech. Problem is I saw on a safe vaping power chart that with a resistance of 1.5 you want to be between 3 and 3.5 volts. Isn't that when you want to change your battery out? After a fresh charge aren't you going to be between 4.2 and 3.5 volts?

I really like how sexy the mechanical mods are. I'm not going to be sub ohming.

Hi rmacaronio and welcome to ECF.

The safe vaping power charts are made with clearos in mind. Cartos handle more power and rebuildables go higher still. Kayfun type RDAs will do well on a mechanical mod from around 1.8 ohms down to around 0.8 ohms. I suggest you start at around 1.5 ohms and see how you like it there.

Be careful to avoid shorts or you can cause the battery to vent. Also make sure you're using IMR or hybrid batteries with enough amp limit to supply the current your coil will draw.

I also suggest you try to change the battery out at 3.7-3.6V.

Have fun!

Thanks Ryedan. I've actually been lurking for the last week and reading up on battery info. I've seen you give good info on many of those posts. Thanks for taking the time to help us noobies out. I'm getting a ohms meter to check the builds before throwing them on. Do they also check how much battery life is left? Also, I always thought the short would be where you build your coil, but I've recently heard people Say they can happen on the mod walls or the 510 connection. Can you check that with those popular ohms meters on all the vape websites? I guess with the batteries, I'm trying to decide between aw brand, and the Sony vtc5 everyone is taking about. Ate those sonys mostly geared towards sub ohm builds? Or would they be better for what I'm looking to do also? I know to stay away from all brands with "fire" in the name, and I'm going to get the nitecore charger.

I prefer mechanicals myself also. One thing that would give you the best of both worlds would be to add a "kick" to your new mechanical. The Kick2 from Evolv will let you vape a mechanical just like you would with your MVP2. I run an 18650 mod with an 18490 kicked with my Kayfun and it's a perfect "all day vape" for me.

The added benefit is that you get all the protection you need to vape safely. Then, if you want to run setups that are lower than .8 ohms, just take the kick out.

Have you ever heard of a product called the Kick 2? This product gives you protection against shorts and what have you. I have one for my mech mods as I just got into mechs. I have a Provari but that has protection where my Nzonics don't so I will admit I'm a bit nervous even though I don't sub ohm or anything and I normally only do my coils no lower than 1.3 So If you want check this web site out as they are the ones who make the Kick 2. and you can read about it. Thanks guys. Yeah I've read about kicks. I guess I just have to do some research to find out if they will be compatible with whichever mod I choose to go with. I am going to want 18650 size batteries so they last. Trying to decide between a stingray mod, nemesis, and copper penny. Hope a kick will fit. So with a kick...Do you choose how many volts? Or are they generally staying at 3.7 the whole time? And are the Sony vtc5 hybrid or just imr?

You're welcome rmacaronio and good to see you're learning fast :)

Battery voltage is how you check battery life left. As you know they start out at 4.2V and go down from there as you use them. They go to 3.8 quite fast, stay between 3.8-3.6 for longer and then drop faster and faster as the rest of the charge is used up.

The black box ohm meters can only check your attys. To troubleshoot your mod you'll need a digital multimeter. That's what I use to check battery voltage also, but you can also get a dedicated screw on, inline voltmeter that will also show you voltage drop under load when you hit the button. IMO an inexpensive DMM is the best way to start out. It will test everything for you and give you time to decide what to get next. It will also let you check batteries out of the mod.

Maximum amp specs are the most important thing to watch for in a battery. Here's a list of safer chemistry, IMR and hybrid, batteries commonly used in vaping. The VTC5 is not on it. It is also 30A, but with 2600 mAh. The VTC5's are just starting to be counterfeited and they are also hard to find lately. If you're not planing to go below 0.3 ohms, I would go with the Samsung 25R, 20A, 2500 mAh. If you want to be able to go lower than 0.3 ohms I would get Sony VTC4, 30A, 2100 mAh. There are other good choices, but these two are what I would chose between for myself. Unless you vape at very low watts, you'll find these will outperform most other batteries in any mod setup.

What does IMO stand for. I still need to buy one of these so I can test Efest 18650 2500mAh batteries when the come off the charger and while vaping so I know when to charge them. I use a kick with my Nemesis and I can not yet tell when it drops in power. By the way I'd love if a veteran could check out the Pegasis1337 videos on batteries. He has some new information on the Sony VTC5 on his sight that makes me a little afraid to purchase them. I'd love to know what you think of his info.

Considering efest rewrapped VTC4 in their 2500 35amp purple battery and the inflated the stats, and Sony has passed testing by somebody that has far more knowledge I batteries then a YouTube reviewer, I not I saying I won't use the purple 2500mah efest, but when it comes to trusting my face to authentic and tested batteries, Sony VTC batteries will win ever time base upon real testing and not a YouTube review.

IMO = in my opinion ;)

Using a kick, you will not notice much of a power drop as the battery discharges because the kick will keep power stable just like any regulated mod will. I'm pretty sure the kick will shut down when the voltage goes down to a safe point, but check your specs to make sure. There are a few different ones on the market and I'm not really familiar with them.

Here's a thread where VTC5 counterfeits are discussed and also the Pegasis video.

Vape on.
