I thing everyone here is missing the FDA (government) aspect on this. They dont care about the health aspect of this. In the post above me cookiebum has avoided 374 smokes = 18.7 packs with at least $3 per pack going to the government. They want thier $65.1 dollars.

It can't be that. If that all there was to it, they'd just fast-track adding the taxes to the nic juice. And mark my words, those taxes are coming.

I think the real issue is twofold:

In one ear, politicians get pressure from the pharma industry to ban these things. If vaping becomes mainstream and not regulated as a medical device, they'll lose a lot of money from their gum/patches/etc.

In the other ear, politicians get pressure from the antitobacco lobby.

From the politician point of view, banning vapng is win/win: they make bp happy and ensure continued campaign donations, and the antis will laud their praises to voters, saying that they are safeguarding the children.

So far, I don't have any personal experience in relating to other people. Every smoker friend I spoke too told me they have been considering e-cigs and the only reason they have not gone ahead is because of perceived initial cost, but most of all confusion about what to buy.
I have to say the latter was my biggest stumbling block. I wanted top make sure that what I got would work well for me, but the choices were staggering (and continue to be so).

However, I have done enough research to know of all the misconception and the outright ignorance out there. In a perfect world, the inventor of e-cigarettes would be a Nobel laureate and the Health Dept. would be giving them away for free.

Instead, they have acquired this reputation that is totally unwarranted and which is effectively limiting the spread. I have a feeling that a few years from now, all these otherwise worthy association will look back and tell themselves "boy, were we stupid. Think how many people we could have saved from cancer if we just dealt with the issue honestly".

i am surprised the tobacco industry is sitting around and doing nothing about this: if they fully embraced the e cig industry (we have to get the nicotine from some source) then they can move away from a product that has created tons of lawsuits and money they could pocket in the short term (give it a few years after the big tobacco embrace and the liquid will be heavily taxed and people will try new lawsuits but the short term will give them a big gain).
