Gripper or VTR type mechanical mod?

Is there such a thing as a mechanical mod that is side-by-side instead of a single tubular design? Kinda like a gripper or the VTR? I'd actually prefer if it is made from some kind of durable plastic so it won't dent or scratch when dropped.

If there is such a thing, where can I get one?

There isn't much - trust me, I've looked. And looked. And looked.
There's the microstick, but it's a bit too pricey for me, and $28.19 Pipe Style Telescopic Mechanical Mod Kit - locking ring / 2.4ohm / 1.2mL at FastTech - Worldwide Free Shipping but I've heard too many issues about it.
I'm about to build my own, but I'm retired and had ton of free time to learn how from the bottom up. Most people wouldn't be willing or able to learn basic electronics, how to solder, etc just for an ecig.

Yeah, I'm really looking for one that has the connector along side the battery for maximum compactness. I'm looking for one because my father-in-law feels "stupid" tooting on something so long and wants one that he can effectively hide in his hands.

Mostly the issues are with the mod itself not working with an 18350. It seems to be fine telescoped for an 18650, so that'll work for you.
Unfortunately, FastTech and all of China are going on holiday for the next couple of weeks, so unless you're willing to wait until March for it, I'd look to buy it stateside. Sometimes it's listed as the r80.
