Why are some people so resistant to the idea that nicotine by itself is not as addictive as everyone thought it was?

Because years of actual science does not support that idea .. and, because the idea smacks of the same propaganda that launched the cigarette originally .. and, it sounds like we are trying to support our habit with flawed logic .. and, as you said, it's anecdotal evidence .. and your friend WIKI says ... "The expression anecdotal evidence refers to evidence that may be true but cherry-picked or otherwise unrepresentative of typical cases.

Also, anecdotal evidence can be inaccurate, sometimes based on anecdotes, second-hand accounts of events or hearsay.

I admit I am addicted to the nic .. if not for the PV, I'd still be lighting up ..

I got chewed out by a hippy once about my E-cig.

People at the party were like "what is that"

I continued to explain what it was and how it's pretty much a cigarette without anything bad and this guy jumped in and got on the offensive about it.

He told me that It was a crutch and that I wasn't doing anything good for myself. Mind you... he was smoking a cigarette and I felt a sense of irony that he was bashing me for saying my e-cig was healthier..

After about an hour (at least felt like it) keeping my cool, I just told him It's not so much the health benefit, it's more of a hobby.

I'm not a anti-smoking activist, I just like vaping better than smoking.

After that he said "I respect you for doing it because you like it, not because it's safer"

I personally could care less if I get his O.K. of my vaping, but I did realize I vape because I like it better and... well it turned into a hobby.

This is just an opinion piece, not a study, and it is pretty much talking about nicotine from smoking.

Uncle Willie said:
This study doesn't quantify nicotine addiction in any way, it just states the assumption that it is addictive.
We all know it is somewhat addictive, what is in question here is how addictive it really is when not delivered by cigarette smoke.

Uncle Willie said:
This one is about smoking, not nicotine removed from the cigarette smoke.

Uncle Willie said:
This one again only says that nicotine is addictive, but does not quantify how addictive.
And mostly it is talking, again, about smoking.

But it does say this, which is also what I'm trying to say...
Scientific research is also beginning to show that nicotine may not be the only psychoactive ingredient in tobacco. Using advanced neuroimaging technology, scientists can see the dramatic effect of cigarette smoking on the brain and are finding a marked decrease in the levels of monoamineoxidase (MAO), an important enzyme that is responsible for breaking down dopamine. The change in MAO must be caused by some tobacco smoke ingredient other than nicotine, since we know that nicotine itself does not dramatically alter MAO levels. The decrease in two forms of MAO, A and B, then results in higher dopamine levels and may be another reason that smokers continue to smoke to sustain the high dopamine levels that result in the desire.

I started vaping I used 36mg now I DIY at about 12mg so last week I thought maybe I'll go down to 0 and see what happens, so I mixed up some hazelnut tabacco at 0mg and vaped it for the rest of that night and until about 5pm the next day. I was at work and I was having a hard time concetrating and had a bit of a nagging head ache so there was definitely some withdrawl happening but on the upside I hadn't had any nicotine in over 17 hours and I wasn't climbing the walls or ready to kill. so I decided to step down a little slower by mixing at 8mg then 6mg then 3mg ... so the point of my long story is that I would have never been able to do that when I smoked 17 hours without a smoke there would be killing. to me the withdrawl and the addiction felt different almost manageable like trying to kick caffeine but thats just my experience from my no nic day.

I wouldn't even consider leaving the house without my PV, but if I did, as soon as I discovered it I'd turn around and go back and get it. Now you tell me, does this sound like a hobby? JMHO
Otrpu, please know that I am not singling you out here, just using your post as a jumping off point...

I have read many posts from everyone on this thread throughout their stay here.
I have noticed a pattern, in that people who smoked A LOT have trouble with this concept of nicotine not being very addictive by itself.

To me that is very understandable.

As I said before, we are all different, and there are probably many people who are very much addicted to nicotine.
But you folks, in my opinion, seem to be more in the minority.

I can drink alcohol whenever I want, but I'm not an alcoholic.
I had previously smoked for 27 years (average of 5 cigarettes per day) but I was never addicted to nicotine.

My point, again, is that we are all different.

And lumping us all into a group of nicotine addicts is just plain wrong in my opinion.
And more importantly, it is counter-productive.

We tell newbies that what they want and need from their smoking addiction is unique to them.
And we tell them the solutions to their issues will be just as unique.

So let's open up our minds a bit and consider the possibility that nicotine addiction may or may not be a primary issue for many.

I would say I was addicted to cigarettes because I'm vaping nic and I still feel I'm missing something from analogs, a feeling I hope will go away. That's just me. Here's my take, maybe merely word play. I think of a hobby as something fun, a habit not necessarily, the habit of using turn signals when I drive for instance. Vaping is not necessarily fun for me, hasn't gotten to that point anyway. Sorry, PV lovers. It's just something I do in place of analogs. Need vs. want. That's why I call it a habit.

Actually if you are calculating frequency then yes a lot of us vape more that we smoked. However, it take 5-8 minutes to smoke an analog, whereas it takes 5 seconds to hit a PV. So a pack and a half a day would be between 2.5 and 4 hours that I had an analog burning. But with the PV, 200 hits at 5 seconds per gives me approx 16 total minutes of vape time. So in actuality I spend 92% less time vaping than I ever did smoking. That being said I would have to answer both for me. It's a fun hobby, and a habit... just not a habit thats going to kill me :)

5 to 8 mins??? Dag, I used to suck down a cig in 3 mins. 3 mins x 20 cigs a day = 1 hour. I'm pretty sure I vape more than that.

I don't believe there is a right answer or even a preferable answer here. For some it seems to be much more a habit (addiction) than a hobby. Each of us has our own reasons for vaping and one persons answer is right for him, much like which PV or E-liquid flavor you like. Thanks for the post!

I'd say it's both for me. I can go all day if I have to without vaping but I don't want too, I love the taste so much that if I can't vape I start thinking about what flavor I want to vape when I get one back into my mouth. I don't have the nic withdrawl that I did with analogs cause some of the 4000 chems in them were making me crave them more. I have found that nicotene isn't as addicting as the other stuff in an analog! I have cut down to 12mg and I plan on going to 6mg soon.
