Is there such thing as a not cute beagle?? It does not sound like a bad way to spend your time!

How are you this evening Blu?

Beagles are all pretty cute but I like the little mini dachshunds more, don't have one but they are all really cute, especially the ugly piebald & dapple ones.

I grew up with dachshunds, beagles and german shepards. Gotta love em all. For the last 28 years I've raised Labs, Siberian Huskys and Shih tzu's. I simply just love dogs, they are the best of the best friends.

Have answered your email, and raise ya 2 bits, your call, lol.

I guess you win because I have nothing left to say but thanks, so I fold (for now)

Since the hubby and I have been together we have had Rottweilers, English Mastiffs and Eurasias. When our Mastiff left us we decided to try something a little smaller less aggressive and most importantly that didn't drool as much. We went back and forth between labs and beagles and decided on a black lab and chocolate lab. They are wonderful dogs. About 2 years later we decided to add a beagle to our pack. I love my labs, they are loyal, sweet pets. But since my Porthos has arrived that is it for me! I don't think I ever want another breed. Growing up my mom bred standard poodles and we also had small poodles, various hounds, an elk hound, german short haired pointer, boarder collies etc.

I love every breed I have had, but the beagles just do it for me!

We had German Shepherds for the longest, but when our last one, our 14 y/o female, woke up paralyzed, and I couldn't move her, I said our next dog would be smaller.
I knew I wanted to show obedience, so went with Shelties. (We don't have enough for a Boarder Collie to do .... it would have been neurotic)

I had my last 2 huskys Sabastian and Willow for 18 years They were awesome. I now have Pippin (shih tzu) he's 8 and he's my bestest friend. I tried and took in a homeless cat last fall for about 2 months, that didn't work to well cause she didn't like Pippin so she has a home now with my sister-n-law. I like cats ok but they are persnickery (tring for a better word just can't right now, lol).

Boarder Collie's are my moms thing. She has one now, while we have enough property for it, they don't give it enough stimulation and it is a bit neurotic, kind of a waste of such an incredibly smart K9. I am just glad he lives in her house and not mine! She also currently has a Standard Poodle and german short haired pointer. So add my two labs and two beagles we have 7 dogs on the property at the moment. (yes we like dogs)

We had similar problem. Our English Mastiff tore his ACL and as a result got hip dysplasia (it wasn't genetic but caused by the injury) he needed a bunch of help getting and it isn't easy with a 175 lb dog. He was about 3 years old at the time. About 3 months before he injured himself we got our Eurasia and ended up having to put Max (our mastiff) down about 2 months later. When our Eurasia was 3 years old he had an aneurism in his spine and was paralyzed from mid body all the way back. We had to put him down shortly after. That is why I wanted beagles, as I can more easily lift them and help them! But the family won the first vote so we went with labs.

It was very sad putting 2 dogs down both at 3 years old in a 3 year time period. I almost gave up on dogs. I am very pleased to say both labs will soon be 4 years old!

Hi Reddhot, how are you this evening.

Our Rotty lived to almost 15 (which is good for a rotty)

We had two Persian cats when the labs arrived, but the labs would chase them and scare them so badly they stopped coming out to eat and stopped grooming themselves, so we decided to find a home from them where they would be happier. I swear the labs didn't want to hurt them, the few times they did corner them they just sniffed them.

Funny, the rotty, the mastiff and the Eurasia never bothered them.

Oh well, I'm not a cat person anyway!

We had to put our male GSD down 6 months before our female went (also 14 yrs old). He developed a spinal problem and couldn't urinate..... we tried cathing him 5 times a day, but it didn't work. He was 140 lbs, and didn't want any part of it.
All of our GSDs were good dogs, but even the ones we got from Germany had so many health problems now days. It's sad .... and the American bred ones are worse. IMHO .... just my opinion ....

Nothing worse then putting a dog down. I do have to say it was much harder having to do it when the dogs were 3 then when they were 15! I couldn't sooth myself by thinking I provided them with a long happy life. And twice in a row.

I don't know if this is true, but I saw on Animal Planet that beagles are so old, they don't even know where they originate from and because they have been around for so long all health issues have been bred out of them and they are extremely healthy without any health issues inherent to the breed.

Younger dogs are harder to put down .... you don't really think anything bad could/would happen at 3 yrs old.

I think they said something like that on "Dogs 101" about Beagles also .... that's nice. Shelties have a few genetic problems, but ones you can test for ..... so if your breeder has had their dogs tested, and are free of the genetic markers, they are pretty healthy...... just yappy. lol Man, can they bark, and over anything.

Choosing the proper breeder is important for ALL breeds. I bet your Shelties are beautiful. They are such regale beautiful dogs.

It was Dogs 101 (I love that show) they also talked about the three distinct "barks" a beagle can do. They have a bark, they have a chase sound and a thing that is a cross between a howl and a bark. They do the howl bark thing to communicate and when they are lonely. I thought it was bad with one beagle, but now that we have two they get together and make this horrible sound at the same time, I guess to communicate with each other. Once they start there is no stopping them for a minute or two ad the sound will about chase you out of the house.
