I, personally, don't have a problem paying them $20 or more to do the job that they do, especially given the fact that they are expected to show up to work whether it's a beautiful sunny morning OR raining, sleeting, snowing, storming. If you want someone to do the job and do it well, show up to work everyday despite the weather and be reliable and trustworthy employee, you need to PAY them well!

But if they are paid too well, they can afford to take (weather) days off work. 7 weeks paid vacation, paid sick days and paid well enough to take extra days off work. And no student loans to pay off!!

BTW, do they work 8 hours a day?

That really depends on the job they do. I'm sure the sorters and "internal" people are working 8 hour days. The letter carriers are paid by the route. If they can finish their route in 6 hours they get paid a full days work eventhough they didn't "work" the full day.

Dont care too much except that they have 5 of my packages held hostage. Otherwise everything else since the strike started has been coming through via ups & fedex.

Could care less about all of this.

[edit] and they better not be leaving those products in a crazy unvented 180F warehouse... I'll be verifying everything upon delivery and they will absorb the losses, not me, if there are any.

What's with everybody pointing at other people's jobs and exclaiming they make too much money for what they do? "Those people making great wages and having awesome benefits are totally costing me money, I could send a package for $10 instead of $13 like it is now, darn those greedy whiners". Disgusting. I've seen outrage over some blue collar workers wanting to keep the good deal they were offered (wouldn't you, if you were in their spot and had the ability to do something about it?) and nobody ever stops to consider how they'd feel if that scrutiny was applied to their job. People that have never done your job and have the vaguest idea of what your responsibilities are, deciding that they know what's involved better than you do, and that you make a disgustingly high amount of money and are thus a greedy thief. That's where we'll all be in a few years if this ......ed trend doesn't quit.

"I need everyone else's wages to decrease so that I can get products and services cheaper and pay less taxes. My wages? They need to go up, I don't get paid enough for the hard work I do!" Gross.

lawl, yep, nice one. However, I have to wonder why a corporation with surplus revenue, who's employees start at more than twice the minimum wage, has a huge pension deficit. In fact why do they have a pension at all? I don't, do you? Add that it's a crown corp owned by the people who are now the only ones suffering, and I have to declare shenanigans.

A crown corp shouldn't have a union imo, and "back to work" legislation should not exist, ever. You wanna make some legislation? How about we don't allow all that ad (junk) mail? CP needs moneh to pay outrageous salaries and benefits, so they clutter our mailboxes with crap that we end up recycling. Recycling is paid for by taxpayers as well lol

    meh.

I agree, if there's surplus revenue and management isn't applying it to the Corporation's contractual obligations, where's it going?

I don't have a pension, but I have the choice to work for any employer that does, so whose fault is it that I have no pension? Mine. If I wanted one that badly I'd be able to go out and get one. These people saw that as part of the package that they wanted, and went to go work to get it.

There's too much comparing to people that have crummy jobs lately. Minimum wage is for teenagers. If you're 40+ and still making minimum wage, having money and the things it can buy weren't high on your list of priorities. We all should be aiming higher, not participating in the race to the bottom that seems to be going on these days.

CP workers are currently locked out by management. I'm not saying that management was wrong to do that, I'm just saying that the reason the mailman didn't come to your house today was ultimately due to a management decision.

They're reliant on junk mail revenue now. Generally, nobody voluntarily says "You know what, I make too much money, I'm going to make an effort to earn less of it", and corporations won't either. They'd find something else to spend it on, just like how taxes never go down :)

My father was a union man, BACK in the day, but even he said, the unions were getting out of hand on wages and demands for new workers, benefits, and guaranteed jobs. The job he had here in town is NO longer. OUT Of business, closed it's doors.

If you haven't noticed everyone's doors are shutting, union or not. In the automotive industry where I came from, the production workers for the auto companies where union. The rest of us, a larger group, working for the suppliers were not. Guess who is left standing..

There is NO way someone should walk in off the street to sort wood, mail, or garbage and make $20 or more per hour..

Don't worry, those days are done. You have to do something really productive now like push paper writing reports to get that wage or better. Happy?

I am confused by this notion to start with. Why is someone who sorts or collects my garbage, something I can’t do without and I really really don’t want to do myself, worth less than someone who sells me overpriced insurance on my car I don’t want or need, but am forced to buy by those writing dumb laws both getting paid far more? Who would you rather do without?

Now lets apply that to e-cigarettes. One one had you have the mailman who makes 40-50K per year. They bring you your package of e-cigarettes, without them this industry would not exist. You may view this as a simple job, and you only need grade 12 to do it. On the other had you have manager at HC, who makes 100K++ per year (btw they work 38 and get paid for 40 since we are beating on the letter carriers), valuable people because they have paper achievements on their wall not just grade 12. If they have their way this industry will cease to exist.

I ask you, who is really worth more to you…

I am not saying they don't deserve a good wage. I believe that everyone deserves a good wage if they work for it. The incentive to work is gone. Why should any of them go above and beyond or work harder. The wage they make is what they make, so they cheat the system. Carriers get their routes done in less then 8 hours but still get paid for them, all of them bank sick days etc. Ever tried to let a unionized employee go because of bad work ethics? That is almost near impossible!

What I am saying is people need to work for their money! I know many people with a few years of post secondary education that started at about minimum wage, but worked up the ladder. Everyone here must KNOW someone that started at the bottom of the ladder, so that statement doesn't hold water at all. We could compare McDonald's counter staff, to CP's counter staff? Would that compare ok? NO! What you are saying is a CP worker deserves it because they work there.

The other thing, is it JUST me or has anyone else noticed the difference in rates between USPS and CP? I remember sending a parcel express post in the States and it getting there in two days, just about anywhere I sent it. Coast to coast in 3. AND they work Saturdays.

Again I couldn't imagine needing something only to find out the business is closed because of dispute? If the so called business kept it up, they wouldn't be in business for long. Imagine a pharmacy, clinic, hardware store, being closed because of a dispute? That is NO way to run a business. Thank goodness there is NO union behind the internet service providers, they we would hear some noise!

Again just my 2 cents, the world is changing, we need to change with it. We are not in the dirty thirties anymore.

THIS industry would still exist, why wouldn't it? I am getting my packages via courier, like most here now that this has happened. If CP wasn't around, I am sure the other businesses would compete for the major part of the market. With CP I have to walk down to the end of the road to get my package or pick it up at the Post office, with the courier it is delivered to my door. Believe it or not, some prefer courier and not CP.

I don't even care what the outcome is as long as it's resolved soon, and it doesn't affect the already high shipping rates. Seems unlikely at this point that rates won't go up, though. After this lock out, I'm guessing quite a few companies will switch to courier altogether. I think CP will be in rough shape in the coming years. They've already lost all their profits for 2011.

I’m sure some do prefer the couriers, but do they prefer the cost?

Toronto, Montreal, Vancouver ect are all well served by the couriers, however the service is twice the price.

For location like Happy Valley Goose Bay, Newfoundland the couriers are useless. There are many many vapers in places like those, I know I have them as customers. Couriers will not deliver to your apartment mailbox, or PO box.

Ironically if you use FedEx’s COD service, the funds are returned to you via Canada Post.

Canada Post provides a service that is very different to anything offered by any of the other couriers.

That’s called falling for the old carrot in front of the mule, where you are always working harder to get that carrot, that keeps moving further and further away.

Here is how business works. A contractor submits a bid for a job outlining what they will do and the cost. If selected they provide the services in the contract. If the contract is to fabricate a whatever, they don’t throw in a extra “to go the extra mile”.

Why should things work any different for a worker. The postal worker has a contract which specifies they work X hours, doing Y job for Z pay. They fulfill their end of the deal, the company fills theirs by paying them. Not everyone wants to climb the corporate ladder, nor are they in a position to do so. That doesn't mean everyone is out to cheat the system.

Carriers get their routes done in less then 8 hours but still get paid for them

Its like the kid who cuts my lawn. I give him $20 to do it. I couldn't care less how long or short of a time it takes him to do it as long as he gets it done. What are you paying a worker for really? Their time looking pretty, or getting the job done. They did what was expected of them, is having them stand around for the other 2 really that productive?

Oh, I see, you'll use them to do more work then for that extra 2 hours. Well guess how long the 8 hour job will take the next day... Maybe I should make the kid who cut my lawn for $20 now water the garden because he got the lawn done to quick?

I'll suggest that if someone does an 8 hour job in 6, they are actually working hard, rather than being lazy. Give them the 2 hours, they worked hard to get it.

all of them bank sick days etc.

Banking means you didn't use them. How is that abusing the system. Abusing the system would mean you call in sick 1.5 days a month as soon as you get your days. Some workers have more than 400 days bank, meaning they have always shown up to work. I wouldn't call that lazy

LOL at/with Can Supplier! And hence the reason for the CP dispute. I was thinking of quoting and responding. We could have them come here to negotiate, and get no where as you and I are. *smile* We all have a difference of opinion. I will let it go. A contract is a contract. The contract is out of date, so they must negotiate to get something figured out here.

Getting back to the original post, missing the Canada post, for people that can't afford the higher shipping rates, I feel for you. For those of you that have your "stuff" stuck in limbo, I feel for you too! For businesses having to charge higher I feel for you too. All around this kind of stuff just hurts the economy.

Just so everyone knows, I love my mail people at my little post office here. They are tremendous, and they do go above and beyond. I love just chatting with them. My post office ROCKS!! I am lucky!! I am sorry that a CP was used as an example, Canada Post for the most part does a pretty good job. I *should* have used the term union more then just CP. I walked the picket line with my father, I really have experienced this from both sides of the fence. I ran my own business years ago too and I know what it means to have reliable employees, and I know the headache of when they aren't. It is a balancing act. People in numbers have a lot more power to negotiate, so I understand the basics of the union, I do wish them luck, and hope them the best in their negotiating and outcome, for both sides!! There are employees (management) on the other side of that union too. They have chosen to have the headaches incurred with that type of position. As they say, that is why you get paid the big bucks baby!

    Hand shake and sign off,
    Char

I got a feeling the two of us, even with our different views would stand a better chance at negotiating a contract, than we have seen with CP ;)

    Have a good one :toast:

    From CTV's page..

Peter Van Loan, the Conservative House leader, said he's aiming for the back-to-work bill to be passed by the end of Thursday, the last scheduled day of the session before the summer break.

"Well, I'm hopeful that we can finish it off, if not on Thursday, perhaps on Friday," he told reporters Tuesday afternoon. "Then it has to be dealt with at the Senate, so that could mean postal service as early as next week."

Looks like it could go out until Friday morning until a decision is made? Or that is as late as they are going to let it go before they let the bell ring for summer? I was hoping for everyone involved, it would be settled today... *ugh* Any news or if anyone else read something else please post.... Thanks in advance!
