Am I crazy or stupid?
I found out they make menthol nicotine free e cigs.
I loved menthol cigs and miss smoking.
I also need to loose weight. I am disabled and have MD so exercise is hard to impossible. I am hungry all the time.

I was hoping that maybe between the taste and deading of taste buds I might eat less.

Even if it made no difference weight wise when I quit I promised my self if they ever came out with a cigarette that would not kill me (or not kill me any faster than bacon, or white bread) that i would so start again.

I know better than to get hooked on nicotine again, even though the smoke is WAY more dangerous than the nicotine.

My wife thinks this is a horrible idea, as I bet my dr would too.
My thing is life is not risk free, that and we all have to die some time.

Any way what do you guys think?
a
Any one try nicotine free e cigs?
Do menthol e cigs taste like menthol cigarettes or just straight menthol?
thanks

Most people here are scared of suggesting you do something they have tried their entire lives to stop doing. And with good reason. But as an adult you have your own decisions to make. If you stick with zero nicotine I don't see that anyone has the right to stop you if you are educated and intelligent enough to recognize the risks you are taking.

Having said that, nothing you will find will taste much like menthol that you are used to.
And these things can be quite a hassle, and there is a need to replace various parts often.

I would not suggest it, and would instead recommend some spearmint gum or something.
In fact, Altoids has some "curiously strong" gum now that is like their mints.

This is not a toy, this is a sometimes difficult, sometimes frustrating, and sometimes expensive device that is best suited to those who want to stop doing something that is killing them.

And one very important thing to keep in mind, the FDA may take them away from you at any time.
And then I shudder to think what you might decide to do at that point.

> Am I crazy or stupid?

Probably both. ;-)

> I found out they make menthol nicotine free e cigs.
> I loved menthol cigs and miss smoking.

I loved menthol cigs too but don't miss smoking. Although it's as if I didn't quit.

> I also need to loose weight. I am disabled and have MD so exercise is hard to impossible. I am hungry all the time.

I haven't gained weight since I quit smoking.

> I was hoping that maybe between the taste and deading of taste buds I might eat less.

You won't deaden you taste buds. But you might eat less. If there's anything to the 'hand/mouth' "oral fixation" part of smoking/vaping, then it may be a substitute for eating but I have no double blind studies on that. lol. Just a guess.

> Even if it made no difference weight wise when I quit I promised my self if they ever came out with a cigarette that would not kill me (or not kill me any faster than bacon, or white bread) that i would so start again.

You don't have to be a slave to earlier promises to yourself. You can just make a decision in present time, given the present developments whether this is what you want to do or not.

> I know better than to get hooked on nicotine again, even though the smoke is WAY more dangerous than the nicotine.

The smoke is way more dangerous but as long as you are free of nicotine, you might want to keep it that way. Why be a slave to a drug you've already kicked?

> My wife thinks this is a horrible idea, as I bet my dr would too.

It's _your_ life, not your wife's or doctor's. Of course you would have to deal with that in your life. Your choice.

> My thing is life is not risk free, that and we all have to die some time.

True on both accounts.

> Any way what do you guys think?

I think you (or anyone) should do what makes you happy as long as it doesn't harm others. One has the right to things that may be harmful to oneself. It's not always the right thing to do, but it's your body and your life. Although to live life with others, you ought to take their thoughts into consideration. Discuss it with your wife and your doctor and explain what it means to you. Of course the doctor is likely not to go for the idea, but there are more doctors out there that might not think it's such a bad idea. Find one. And your wife might not think it's such a good idea, but there are more wom...... well, perhaps you could convince her otherwise. :)

> Any one try nicotine free e cigs?

I have some no nicotine eliquid. It's tasty. But for me, I need the nicotine. You shouldn't need it. And I'd advise against it, but again, your choice - your life, etc. not mine, nor anyone else's on earth - just yours.

> Do menthol e cigs taste like menthol cigarettes or just straight menthol?

You can get both tastes. I like Janty's Newport for a menthol cigarette taste but currently there isn't a no nicotine version of that for sale. But you could, just for example combine Virginia 0mg nicotine:

VIRGINIA VIRGINIA LIQUID - N

... and this:
MENTHA SPICATA MENTHA SPICATA LIQUID - N

Or:
Janty NON Jucie - Below Zero Liquids .com
And pick the polar mint and either mlb or camel and mix them.

As for straight menthol, I don't particularly care for them other than adding menthol to other flavors.

> thanks

Your welcome.

Hi Stranger.
I don't think you are crazy or stupid, just curious. I would not suggest you try ecigs. The eliquid (PG based, which is the majority of the ones sold on the websites) tears my throat up. My throat is constanty feeling dry and scratchy. It's awful. Also, the ecigs is an expensive habit if you are a non smoker then you will be spending money again on a habit. You have to buy the ecig kit, then the juices and then inevitably you will buy more models of ecigs out of curiousity. So far I've probably spent about $200 and i don't anticipate that's all i'll spend.
Furthermore, the ecig has NOT been proven to be safe yet. Inhaling anything into our lungs is probably not a good idea. PG messes up my throat, and VG has been POSSIBLY shown to convert into a toxic chemical.. not sure the name of the chemical, but it's just a possibility. I'm not too concerned about that claim yet, because cigs have tons of toxic chemicals and i smoke them everyday.
Hope that helps.

I can totally empathize with you on this one. I quit smoking just over a year ago. Previous quitters told me that '"It's all about the Nicotine, beat that and you've beaten cigarettes" and, while thats true I think there is quite a bit more to it. I got over the 'need' for a cigarette after the first couple of weeks but even after a full year I never really got over the 'want' for one.
Anyway, I ordered my 510 with no-nic carts and juice. I've been using it for several weeks now and it's been just like welcoming an old friend back into my life, a really bad friend, but a friend non the less.
I'm not wanting to encourage you to start up with the e-cig route because all of the cautions given to you by other are correct. It's an expensive and frustrating habit [hobby?]. Just know that if you think you're nuts to even consider it that you're not alone in being nuts... the line forms behind me.
Good luck with your decision

Bristow, Ok.
I really sympathize with your problem. What I am understanding is your concern with weight gain. Exactly how much of a problem is your weight? Is it harming your health? Will ecigs help you with weight control? Who knows the answer? I don't think anyone can answer this for you. Would starting vaping lead you back to smoking? I think this is something that no one can answer. We are all concerned for your well being. I believe that most vapers are obsessed with not smoking. I know that I am. It is my goal to one day not be controlled by addictions of any kind. I wish you well my friend but I don't really think anyone can answer this question for you. Good luck to you. I do hope you find what you need.

The strange thing is for me I never smoked that much, I was a 1/2 to pack a day smoker in my teens, quit when I turned legal age (go figure). Later on I would enjoy the occasional cigar or pupe full. Got a job where I could smoke it my work truck and started back with little cigars. Then got creamed in a car wreck, had to have back surgery for some collapsed discs. Neurosurgeon said smoking would make the disc degeneration worse and would hinder healing post op. I cut way back and since the surgery have been 100% any sort of smoke free. No pipe, no "I had a baby , have a cigar" no puff of of a buddies smoke nothing.

That was about 8 1/2 years ago. Sad truth is I still miss it. Have had some pretty big stress full setbacks, when that happens I still crave the working man / woman's fix all elixir, coffee and cigarettes. It doesnt make any since. I have been clean longer than I smoked with any sort regularity.

I guess I was able to quit because pain is a strong motivator. The surgery made things worse so the pain is worse now than pre op. I am on a lot of medications that I bet are way more dangerous than e cigs.

Any way thanks for all your comments. FWIW I am going to not start vapeing , now at least. I have hopes that the FDA may let no nic e cigs survive. I would like to wait, see some test results , see what I would be getting in to. That and I hope the technology will improve and the bugs get worked out. Sadly I am afraid the FDA will ban everything. The government wants that tax money and thy don't care who they kill to get it.

I am still going to hang out on the board. Not only is this all a fascinating story, I have a friend who has tried to quit and can't. I would like to see how you guys get along.

Take care
Vape 'em if you got 'em, take good long toke for me because I am setting out.

Check out the Modders forum and then you won't have to worry about the FDA. Now the only thing we have to be concerned about is the nicotine juice and the atomizers. I have heard rumors that the atomizer problem is close to being solved. If you use 0mg juice you can mix your own.
