He Ain't Twisted..... He's My Coil

Just more for grins and giggles than any other reason, I decided to try making a hand twisted coil tonight. I used 2 strands of 28 gauge Kanthal twisted by fingers and a set of pliers. I wrapped it with a 2.5 mm diameter post and did 6 wraps. Slapped it into a deck and onto my ohm reader and it came out to 0.7 ohms. Put it on my regulated box, worked out it's hot spots and she's good to go. Waiting for my last build to die before I put this one in but I wanted to share since this is about the craziest thing I've done so far. (And I never thought I would build coils at all a few months ago.)

Them kanger stm decks aint the easiest to build on as they pretty small

so again good job

i cheat with my twisted like most i use a drill driver or screw gun whatever ya call them over here

If I decide to do this again, I will likely do the same. Twisting by hand is slow.

Good job. I'm liking twisted coils. I use a drill, though. I don't have the patience to do it by hand. I did a triple 26g the other day. 5 or 6 wraps, I don't remember. 2.4mm diameter, came out to .24 ohms. I'm using it in my TFV4 and it is pretty good. I'm like you, though...a couple months ago I had no interest in building my own.

How are you wicking your TFV4? I bought one of the TFV4 Mini Clapton kits a couple of weeks ago and I love the vapor from it but can't keep it from leaking to save my life. I've looked for all kinds of solutions but nothing has worked so far.

I have the full size, single and dual decks. I use rayon. I take about half of the rayon and fold it down, the other half I fold up and cut off. Then I wet the tails a bit and tuck put them in the juice channel, then trim it off just below the the threads where the cap screws on. I have also gotten in the habit of putting a little juice on the o-ring on the bottom of the RBA and the one on the chimney, as well as some around the inside top and bottom of the glass for those o-rings. Sometimes if the o-rings are dry, they will snag and bunch up.

I only used cotton for a week or two. It seemed harder to wick these, though. Either too much and it didn't wick right, or too little and it leaked. I like rayon much better. Cleaner flavor, lasts a little longer, and wicks faster. It's a little tricky to get the right amount in the coil, though. You basically have to use a little more than you think you need, and then a little less than you would think on the tails. There's a couple of good threads on here about it.

If I may also chime in. I just did my first twisted a short while ago, using the end of a pen and a pair of pliers, worked pretty good for me since I don't drill. I might have to go out and buy one though, just for added fun.

I tried making some clapton tonight. I had it wrapping nicely, but I couldn't get it tight enough. The wrap would slide back and forth on the core.

I don't know if I want to do them with a drill. This coil building stuff is actually turning into a Zen kinda thing for me. Using a drill would make it end too fast.

When I was failing at my clapton, it made me wonder... After I slid the wrap off my core, I was left with a hollow wrapped wire. Have you guys seen anyone try making a coil out of that? Seems like there would be a huge amount of surface area. Not only would you have the outside of the coil, but you'd have the inside hollow part of the "wire" as well. I might have to try that tomorrow...

That's what I did, too. Take a length of wire, fold it over, grab the loose ends with your pliers, and hook the loop end into the clip on the end of a ballpoint pen (a one-piece pen is best, you don't want it flying to pieces when you put the tension on.) Then you hold the pliers in one hand, pull it taut, and use the other hand to roll the pen along your leg, twisting up the wire until it snaps. Perfect twisted wire, with no drill required.

Definitely. I have no idea what the resistance would come out to. I don't think it would be high enough. I think the wrap on a clapton makes a pretty negligible difference in the resistance.
