That's what I did, too. Take a length of wire, fold it over, grab the loose ends with your pliers, and hook the loop end into the clip on the end of a ballpoint pen (a one-piece pen is best, you don't want it flying to pieces when you put the tension on.) Then you hold the pliers in one hand, pull it taut, and use the other hand to roll the pen along your leg, twisting up the wire until it snaps. Perfect twisted wire, with no drill required.
Luckily, I have one of these lying around. The ink is dry but I'm glad I kept it.

Have not seen a clapton without the center core wire you will need it in place to help form the coil or it will stretch and deform when trying to wind the coil and when you mount it and tweak it in to position

the core is the main heat source for the outer wrap

when the post holes are to small for claptons i have seen and read that some will strip back the outer core and just clamp the center core in the posts

good luck without the center core

When I was failing at my clapton, it made me wonder... After I slid the wrap off my core, I was left with a hollow wrapped wire. Have you guys seen anyone try making a coil out of that? Seems like there would be a huge amount of surface area. Not only would you have the outside of the coil, but you'd have the inside hollow part of the "wire" as well. I might have to try that tomorrow...
Well you would use that in making "alien wire":

Make a Clapton, strip off the outer wrap, pull it out straight(ish), then re-wrap it backwards, Clapton-style, around a triple-parallel core. I've never vaped on one but they sure are purdy.

I've never watched how to make those yet. Still a little above my paygrade. I'm going to keep working on my claptons for now. I figured someone had done something with it, though.

Back on twisted, what would you guys recommend, larger or smaller wire?

You're essentially doubling the thickness of your wire and if you start going down to heavier gauges, you're coils would be huge. Of course it sorta depends on what sort of resistance you want to get out of it as well.

I twist my wire by doubling it up round the handle of a coffee mug and then just spin the mug. The weight of the mug keeps it nice and even but you need to release it gently or it all bunches up on itself.

Keep twisting until the wire snaps at the handle. It won't bunch up.

At the moment I'm quite confused, let's say I prefer vapor over taste but that doesn't mean no taste at all.

What makes you think it's one or the other?
Thick rich vapor is full of flavor.

Tip: it's more about surface area contact, and airflow than fancy coil builds.

You can get more Flavor and vapor from a simple parallel build than any of these uber alien twisted artsy builds.

They look great, but they don't provide any advantage over a parallel build.

It will have a very very high resistance. Over 30 ohms.

I agree with this. I'm currently running a dual nichrome build. 0.18 ohm. 10 wraps. Best flavour and vapour I've had from all the other crazy stuff I've tried.

I'll probably continue to experiment but I tend to always come back to fairly simple stuff and it doesn't disappoint.

It's because a parallel build has more usable surface area than twisted and less mass than clapton builds if you build them to have the same surface coverage.
