Hello to everyone.
I am new here and thank you for this forum. My husband and I have been vaping for about a year (me on and off). My husband is down to 5 cigarettes at home, probably due to the fact, that I can't give them up.

Some info: We both started with the V2 kits. Both of us are menthol smokers, his full and mine lights. I have tried a lot of different ejuice places on the internet. At least 20 different menthols with different niccotine levels. The problem with me is...while I love the throat hit, I cannot stop coughing afterwards. Therefore, I go back to cigarettes. It doesn't matter where I buy the juice, I always cough. Except with Smokeless Image's Sinthol, but I don't always want to smoke Cinnamon. I have always gotten a mixture of the PG and the VG. I guess I'm asking, should I try just PG or VG and would this help reduce coughing?

What ratio of pg/vg have you been trying? If not a higher VG then I would suggest trying that route. I found PG - although it provides a throat hit is rather harsh on my throat at least. I use 20/80 pg/vg or 100 vg. I find with the vendors whose juice I enjoy - the flavor is minimally muted if at all and that there is still a throat hit - its just more vapor and "silkier" for a lack of a better word to describe it? A big hit off even 50/50 kills my throat. This may be a good place to start.

What type of battery and delivery system are you currently using? This may also be a factor.

Try taking lighter slower drags to see if that helps with coughing, also you don't have to inhale when vaping for the nic to absorb into your system. The coughing also could be from slightly dry carto's or vaping too frequently without allowing enough time for the wicking material nearest the coil to re saturate. Or it might be due to the temperature of the vapor, the coil is fairly close to your lips using small carto's.

The cigalike's (cigarette look a likes) leave an enormous amount to be desired in all facets of vape quality/satisfaction.
You may need different/better equipment to put down the smokes for good. I know I did.
The more it looks like a cigarette the worse they perform, generally.

I can't help with your choice in flavors I can't stand mints/menthol/cinnamon.
50/50 pg/vg is my favorite ratio, smooth with plenty of flavor & vapor.
Higher vg ratio = less flavor, less TH, more vapor but can cause wicking issues.
Just me, any higher vg ratio than 50% leaves a used motor oil feeling & taste in my mouth.

Every smoker who has tried my e-cig coughs at first.

It might have to do with how you inhale. With cigarettes, I used to draw directly into my lungs. With e-cigs, I draw into my mouth, then inhale through my nose, letting the vapor from my mouth mix with it at the back of my throat, then exhale. (It sounds a lot weirder than it actually is.)

I know there are threads around here (somewhere) explaining the difference in how you inhale when vaping as opposed to smoking.

Also, what nicotine level are you using? It might be too high for you. What ratio PG/VG? I've heard some people are sensitive to PG, might want to try increasing the VG.

But try inhaling differently first.

Welcome to ECF!
You never know, you might find you enjoy other flavors better than menthol? I was a Camel "hump" and latter Drum RYO before I went to vaping....and I just don't like any of the tobacco flavors! Pretty weird, huh? You'd think I'd be a hard core tobacco flavor fiend, but I actually enjoy the desert type flavors (and they don't have any calories, LOL!) Try ordering some samples from different vendors, you might be surprised?:)

Great suggestions. I am only smoking .06 niccotine because I can't handle anything else. My husbands draws in huge hits of vapor and never has a problem. I will try the nose method.

And, yes, I am smoking the look a likes. I haven't tried any of the larger equipment sizes.

Analogues are another way to say traditional cigarettes/cigars.

Would you mind updating this thread with any progress in figuring out how to get rid of the coughing? My step-dad has this very same issue and I've been trying to work with him to clear it. Will be receiving some Reduced PG and 100% VG juice for him to try in a day or so, and maybe the nose inhalation method will do better.

Inhalation technique!

Also: Greetings to the OP in Winston-Salem! I went to school there in the days when game announcers said "The Wake Forest Demon Deacons are sponsored by RJR-Nabisco, the makers of Oreo cookies!" (RJR later sold Nabisco to Philip Morris. Neither company, as most ECF folks will know, was famous for making Oreo cookies.)

To say more, I think you will continue to cough when you vape as long as you continue to smoke.
To get used to the vape drags, you have to stop smoking few days. Btw, it help to stop definitely.

Hi Carol,

If I was you I would get some raw PG and VG and 2 brand new cartos/attys/tanks/etc...what ever you use. I would then drop a couple drops of PG ( or one ml in a tank ) and vape that for a few rounds. Then try it with the VG alone, same process. If no reaction, mix up a 50/50 blend and keep trying combos till you cough ( 70/30 PG/VG or 30/70 VG/PG). Try to evaluate each ingredient individually and see if you react. Could be many things but it sounds like you need to break it down if you have tried 20 some juices from various vendors at different strengths. If none of the naked juices react with you then it could be types of flavorings ( suspended in PGA for example) that are getting to you! Keep at it because going back to the analogs is something we all hate to see happen....keep everyone posted on your eventual success.

Hello Everyone,
I received my juices so far from MBV. I got 100% VG and 70% VG and 30% distilled water. I also got different nicotine strengths. The 70/30 did make a difference. While the VG is thicker, I don't notice it much. I use both cartos and clearomizers, but perhaps it is time for a better set up. There is far less coughing. Currently, I am smoking the 70/30 at the lowest nicotine and find that is somewhat doing the job. However...as several members commented, I also have to inhale slightly differently. It does help to not inhale not quite as much and to let it linger in my mouth first. In conclusion...everyone in this thread has been right, lol. Thanks so much everyone!

I was a heavy inhaler on a menthol analog for years, I definitely had to change my method when I went to vaping. Slow consistent inhales, breathe through my nose and slow exhale give me the throat hit and the taste of the flavor without coughing up a lung. I also found when I went from a cartomizer cartridge to tank, I had to reduce my nic content from 18mg to 12mg, that helped a lot. If I want to tone down the hit on older juice I made, I have a bottle of just 70/30 PG/VG made up and I'll squirt 5-10 drops into my tank and slosh it around for a bit, let it settle, then go back to vaping. It takes down the nic content a bit, enough to where I don't have the harsh throat hit on a tank versus a cartomizer that's plugged with batting for interference.
