Hey!

I'm new here so I thought this would be the best post to tell a little bit about my personal and vaping history. I started smoking traditional cigarettes when I was about 13 years-old. I had a rather unorthodox upbringing which allowed me to smoke freely in my living quarters (orphanages, military etc.), and we always hit up the bathrooms with cans of air fresheners and our cigarettes in school between classes. Nobody really ever cared or much less scolded me or my ilk.

Then at 32 years old...

Anyhow, life went on and I met the love of my life six and a half years ago, and our first child was in the works very shortly after. Due to a complicated pregnancy she was born at 25 weeks and four days and only weighed in at 370 grams (13 ounces). She was in the N.I.C.U. for ten months and underwent two major surgeries in the process. Before she came home (not to mention she was on oxygen) we decided that I no longer needed to smoke, because of the danger to her and to myself. I dropped the cigarettes and decided to pick up cans of pouched snuff.

Then came the dental problems...

Yeah, that stuff is bad. I've had half a dozen teeth pulled and multiple types of other dental work done, and still need more done to this day. My wife's mother had started vaping, and was telling me how much she loved it. What really sparked my curiosity was the fact that I went to her house and her carton of cigarettes (minus ONE pack) was in the trash can. She came over for dinner that evening, and I began asking her questions. She told me she had gotten lucky at a local shop and won a free extra starter kit (I know it says KangerTech IPOW2, but know nothing else about this kit), and that she'd give it to me if I wanted it. I went that evening and bought the juice and haven't touched the snuff or anything like it since.

Now, my query to these forums...

Anyhow, while I was intending to use it as a device to assist me in quitting tobacco, which it did, I have recently decided that I don't want to quit vaping. I enjoy it far too much. It's like all the joys of smoking, but none, or hardly any, of the drawbacks. I love trying new flavors and getting a good throat hit. I like it when the taste lingers even a little after too.

While this Kanger has been more than kind I find that it lacks a good strong hit, and it's rather inconsistent when it comes to a full day's work (one out of five hits are very weak). Not to mention that the red paint chipping off looks like I tried to skip it across the road many times. I'm ready to upgrade, and I'm scouring the webs in an effort to find something that meets my criteria.

My few guidelines are:
  • Ease of use (not ready for rebuilds or mechanical mods)
  • Consistent performance (good, strong and consistent hits and large charge capacity) for long days out.
  • Manageable size (one that fits in my pocket)
  • Good selection of bells and whistles (OLED screen, variable voltage(wattage) and pass through charging at least)
I've read up on various types of devices and have zeroed in on what I think would meet and maybe exceed my goals in purchasing an upgrade.

Aspire Nautilus BVC & Eleaf Istick 20w (or 30w) battery. Is this a good second setup for a relatively new vaper? Are these devices prone to be faulty? Are there contenders that I should consider? Where's the best place to find vaping items online for good prices (no ebay)?

I'm sorry for the lengthy post. Feel free to ask any questions if you have any, and I look foward to meeting you all.

Thank you,
Bill

Congratulations on quitting and welcome to the Forum!
The iSticks seem to have worked out their problems and at least the 20 and 30 watt ones are pretty solid mods. Between the two, I would say get the 30w. It's not that much more expensive and will give you longer battery life as well as more power. I really like the Nautilus BVCs. They were my go-to tanks before I got into sub-ohming. After a year of vaping, I've moved on to an IPV mini V2 at 70w because I wanted to see what all the fuss was about concerning sub-ohming, discovered I really liked it and have stayed here pretty much. But there's no need to rush into that.
Just make sure you always have a back-up for your mod and for your tank so you never have to worry about falling back on cigarettes because of equipment failure!
Welcome again, and enjoy your stay here!

You pretty much should always have at least two batteries and two tanks. Things go wrong, you drop them, who knows what all, but it's best to have something there to grab when things do go wrong. And somehow they always do, so have back-ups. And some people will tell you to have back-ups for your back-ups - I once had 3 mods go south on me one after the other, all on the same day. Yeah, I've got 4 working mods now, and 5 tanks...

Hello and welcome to the forum @wjennings1977. Glad to have you here!:)

+1 on the iStick 30 watt. You will not use all 30 watts if you get a Mini (or full size) Nautilus but many of the problems with the 20 watts iStick were fixed in the 30 watt. You could also look at the eLeaf GS Air M or GS Air MS tanks. The Nautilus and GS Air tanks are good for M2L (mouth-to-lung) inhaling.

As for where to purchase check out ECF Forum Suppliers

The past year I've been ordering mostly from:

1. Sweet Vapes
2. My Freedom Smokes
3. My Vapor Store
4. Wet Vapes

I often use vapeCrawler to see who has the best pricing. If I only want to see suppliers from the USA I make sure USA is "green" and all the others are "gray". If you go down to the very bottom of the page you can see all the vaping websites vapeCrawler searches.

Hi and welcome to the board. The iStick 30 is a good machine, sold in many copies. I do think you might want to look at a MVP 3.0. This is another 30 watt mod with a good battery in it. It will be a few dollars more than the iStick, but I think it's worth it for increased quality. It pairs well with the nautilus tank (so does the iStick) and should do you just fine. Nothing wrong with the iStick, mind. That's good gear too. But I do like the Innokin product a bit better.

Welcome :) i started on an evod, then got the istick 30. The istick is not bad but i think you can do better...

Removable batteries - that way you can have 2 or 4 spare in a wee plastic box and take em with you, battery dies just swap it. No waiting fir the device to charge.

Provari 2.5 with the 18650 extension cap. About 120 bucks, awesome build quality, is a great pairing with the nautilus... I have this combo in my kitchen as we speak :)

Or a sigelei mini 30w a solid small box, variable watts about 30 bucks online. I have a couple of these also.

Asides from that i woukd say get a nitecore i4 charger or xtar charger from illumn.com or somewhere reputable, get a few more batteries than you need so you always have:
Batt in device right now
2 fresh batts ready to go with you
A queue of 1/2/3/4 batteries that need charging when you can be home awake in same room or close by for a few hours.

The istick charger plug would get ridiculously hot, and i am not entirely convinced if the safety of usb charging and those kind of batteries. I did use one for a few months, it is small and has decent features BUT i would never buy it again. Go provari / sigelei or another device where you can swap batteries in and out i say :)

Hello and welcome to ECF. Glad you found the joys of vaping. For a lot of us this has turned into more of a hobby once the craving for cigarettes went away so you're not alone in the desire to continue vaping. +1 on everyones recommendations, it's all good advice. It is very important to find a good reliable satisfying set up.

Thank you, madangus!

While you haven't exactly steered me towards the sigelei (sp?) you have encouraged me to seek a device with removable batteries. I'm all about compartmentalizing! Have you used the KangerTech Subox, or know anyone who does or has? If so then what do you think of it?

Hi @wjennings1977
You might wanna try Kanger Subbox Starter Kit.

Thank you, z3n!

Have you used this device? If so then I have a question regarding quality and another general question about this kit. One issue I have with KangerTech is a quality issue. Not even two days after I got my IPOW2 I pressed a bit firmly on the OLED screen pulling it from my pocket and popped it loose. While it does not affect performance it does rattle and gives me caution of buying this brand again. Is it a sturdy device? Also, I watched the video on this thing at MFS and noticed that it's loaded with tauntingly good features and comes with access to some "rebuild-able deck" (I'm a newb) and could be used for sub-ohming (not there yet). I just want basic usage as of now. I just wanna have to fill the tank, charge the battery and change the coils every few weeks. Can I use it as such without having to change other parts or learning everything all over? It would be nice to have access to these vaping styles on a kit for a just-in-case feature! I am a bit adventurous at times...

Realization... I just realized that this kit is made specifically for sub-ohm vaping. I'll just cut the excuse short and blame mild sleep deprivation. That's convenient. Anyhow, now, I'm checking out the iTasteMVP2, and, while it isn't a removable battery mod, it does boast a huge battery charge life. I like that quite a bit. We'll see how things go between now and birthday shopping time!

Hey Bill

I have a Kanger Subox in hand right now - overall build quality is very good - only real drawback is that center pin is fixed and can get pushed down from time to time (but can be prised back up fairly easily)

Kit comes with a 1.5 ohm head also - not specifically for sub ohm - you can dial down airflow for MTL vaping pretty easily

vape on, brother

Hi Bill,
I did have one, but since I need more battery power for my daily use, I replaced the mod with iStick 50W while still using the bundled tank (Subtank Mini).

Just like @dcfluegel described, the overall build quality is great for the money you paid IMHO.
Be sure to buy the authentic one though. Many people have leaking issues, but several friends and me myself who absolutely bought the authentic ones never had any issues at all.
