I would have tried to bite my tongue, but I just couldn't keep from asking what motivated her to take take a class on E cigarettes? How could she even answer that..... I also may have asked what grade she got for the class? LOL

My question would have been "Which self-serving mega-entity sponsored this class...BT or BP?" :)

She very well could have taken a course on nicotine addiction and how it affects oral health and possibly they had information regarding electronic cigarettes. Here are a couple of courses I found www1.umn.edu/perio/tobacco/office_tcmanual.pdf and media.dentalcare.com/media/en-US/education/ce51/ce51.pdf and I found a dentist website that discusses ecigs Can E-Cigarettes Cause Oral Health Problems? | The Blog of Sherwood Dental Care While the courses I listed don't specifically mention ecigs, I thought they were interesting and do point at prescribed nicotine inhalers as possible smoking cessation aids. Information on the dentist website leads me to believe the topic is being discussed in journals and continuing education courses. Based on the information I read in these courses, I can understand why she said what she did, but she should have been more supportive . I think most of us realize there are still some health risks of continued nicotine use and risks because there is no regulation for safety in the products. We all put a lot of faith that the vendors we order from are putting what they say they are putting in their juices and that they are using proper hygiene.

non-smokers love smokers, they get to demonize them. if a new breed of smokers(vapers), that are unable to have fingers pointed at and no longer be demonized, then what ever will they do to put themselves on soapboxes as better than everyone else.
my step mom is a dental hygeinist and has taught a very well known university in Canada for years.....When i told her i was vaping she was thrilled to death and said she couldn't be happier. trust me if it was a negative she'd sure have told me so.

I would have also pressed her for details of this "class" she took and I'll guarantee most members of ECF know far more about the positives and negatives in regards to vaping than this dental hygienist. My dental hygienist LOVES the fact I'm vaping and has noticed a HUGE diff in my oral health- when smoking had to go for a cleaning every 3 months and now I go every 6 months and it's a breeze. Previously gums were receding and are now fully recovered. My Dentist, who is a Dental Surgeon, also LOVES that I'm vaping and has actually given me some patients to convert...with success. My GP has also seen a HUGE impact in the improvement of my general health- has also asked me to speak to some patients about vaping. My Otolaryngologist (Ear, Nose and Throat Surgeon) also LOVES the fact I'm vaping and has also sent some converts my way. All of the above 4 professionals encourage me to vape in their office hoping their smoking clients will become interested. My Dentist and Surgeon's biggest concern, while I was smoking, was oral cancer. Bottom line is ALL 4 of them not only support vaping but encourage it.

I think my next dentist visit is the first one I've looked forward to in ever (20ish years). I'd estimate about half the "tooth" in my mouth has been replaced (or removed) by now, last few visits they've been stressing that I should stop smoking due to receding gums and early signs of...periodontal disease or something, I dono, I never paid much attention because I was a smoker and that was that. I think the only part of it I won't like is that I may bleed more due to a return of blood flow, and the cost. I already know I need a bit of filling, which wasn't even apparent until I started to vape.

I didn't know there was a class on ecigarettes available. I was wondering what the dentist would say, too. I am not going to tell him and I don't have to go for another 6 months. BTW, what did the real dentist say?

I didn't even mention it the dentist. I was so annoyed by it at the time; I sometimes shy away from those who want to remain ignorant, it makes me tired . . . kind of like arguing with a drunk. But I am getting my bridge "installed" today, and I will ask the dentist!

She's just upset because she's only a dentist assistant. Dentist and dentist assistants don't know squat. Dentist are highly over paid in my opinion. I had bad tooth pain a couple months ago and they wanted to give me extra strength iburprofen. I said to him I can't take that because I have GERD. I even said that's in my file didn't you see that. He said oh, we'll give you Motrin then. Well I didn't know what that was and before I got the script filled I googled it and Motrin is just a brand name for iburprofen. What dumb :censored:

That dentist didn't know Motrin was a brand name for ibuprofen? Never underestimate the power of stupid.

I'm curious to see what my hygienist has to say about my mouth when I go back in November. She's a preacher of the antismoking gospel. I get cleanings every 3 months, just to keep up with the periodontal disease. I was told at the last two visits that I needed to quit smoking because of the affects of nicotine on the gums. In the 3 weeks since I have quit smoking and started vaping, my gums are starting to heal. They are getting plump pretty and pink and even on the worst tooth the recession isn't nearly as bad as it used to be. I'm not a dentist or hygienist but I know what my mouth looked like before and I know what it looks like now. It's getting better and I'm still getting the nicotine... So that wasn't the problem.

I'm not going to tell them I am vaping, just that I quit smoking. We'll see what they say...

Actually nicotine stimulates the growth of new blood vessels- proven in a number of studies.
"Studies show that smoking increases the risk of gum disease by 5 to 7 times, as compared to non-smoking. Smoking kills the beneficial bacteria present in our mouth, allowing the disease-causing bacteria to flourish. Furthermore, smoking cripples our immune system and shrinks the blood vessels, so the ability to heal is slowed down.
Smoking may be responsible for almost 75% of periodontal (gum) diseases among adults. Tobacco products damage your gum tissue by affecting the attachment of bone and soft tissue to your teeth. An example of the effect is receding gums. A receding gum line exposes the tooth roots and increases your risk of developing a sensitivity to hot and cold, or tooth decay in these unprotected areas."

Just wait till next week or the week after when your gums start bleeding like a sieve. Go to the Health and wellness section here on ECF and you will find threads about that. You have to stay on top of it (brushing 3-4 time a day, with a good mouth wash) or you will become periodontal, it takes about 5-7 days to go away.

Already there... It's getting less and less each day now. With the periodontal routine I have I haven't been too worried about my mouth/gums. I use an electric brush with a small round head and a water pick with peroxide per Dr's orders. The water pick has been especially rough on my gums the last few days, but it's getting better.

There seems to be two sides of the fence when it comes to vaping.

Those who don't vape are the ones that believe that it is as bad (or worse) than smoking. Then there are the vapers who actually believe that there are health benefits from vaping. Not only is it better than smoking but it is better than not vaping.

Both sides claim that there is evidence that supports their position. When, in fact, there has been NO expert studies supporting either side.

Come on people. Vaping cannot be GOOD for you. We are inhaling a foreign material into our lungs. It IS immensely better than smoking but we would be better off, in the long run, beating the nicotine addiction.
