Been re-watching Ares reviews in preparation for tomorrows arrival of my Ares MTL-RTA.

Bit confused, most folks seem to stress that you need to trim the wick to just or nearly touch the bottom of the deck. Then i watched a young lady who cut hers half way up because she does not like the look of it hanging below the bell?

Which is it, or does it really not matter?

Rolling it around in my head as long as tank is full it doesn't seem to matter. Except that, if you cut higher you could possibly go dry even though tank is not quite empty, thereby effectively reducing the effective volume (vape time) for a fill-up.

Am I missing something? Down the rabbit hole I go ...

Cutting higher creates a tip-and-vape situation but reduces the length of the wick. As with most things vaping there is no “one” way. The critical bit is to have just the right amount of wick so that a satiated wick plugs the hole so it doesn’t leak but also isn’t so tight that it prevents juice from flowing through the wick. That part is less optional.

Passed the 30 day smoke free point early this week. Rewarded myself with a Doggy and the 75w pico.

Shot for 1 ohm with my first handmade coil on the Doggy and hit .56 ...oops lol. Bumped it up to 20 watts and get a really nice vape with the air flow wide open.

The Doggy is a bit harder to set up and refill than the Ares but liking the flavour. Still using the pre made coil in the Ares, rewicked several times and it is like new after 2 weeks.

Gonna keep fiddling with both.

Welcome to the friendly bunch :)

We've all been there so come over if your feeling twitchy, not to mention vaping like there's no tomorrow :) Make sure you're on the relevant nicotine level for you?
12 seems to work pretty well. If I need a boost the 12 in the Scion DL fills my nic tank quick. lol

Welcome aboard rschaad!
Looks like you started out right with a decent setup. Finding what works for you is more than half the battle.
Beware though, hanging out here leads to many things you don't need but get the uncontrollable urge to buy!

This is the way to start vaping. Doing good research is key , so good job. I like the fact you are trying multiple devices to see what may suit your needs. As for the short wick tails, it depends mainly on the type of rta. There are 2 types, one is what they call a gta and the other is a pressure tank. The doggy is a gta in which the wicks are in the juice, so it constantly saturated and for those, it's not as critical to have the perfect lenght. In a pressure tank, like the kayfuns and many others, the tails are not in contact with the juice, it's only when you pull that the juice rises up to saturate the tails. In these type tanks it's much more crucial to get the correct lenght. With either types , it also varies on vaping style and juice thickness. If one is an extreme tootle puffer at 10 watts and a 50/50 juice, those lenghts aren't as crucial as another mtl vapor using 70vg at 25 watts with multiple strong draws.....equally as important in rtas is not only the tail lenghts, but amount of cotton in coil.......good luck my friend and welcome

Good luck with the Ares

So far, so good. Re-wicked several times and no leaks, top or bottom. Managed to break the glass while re-wicking one morning, guess I can't blame that on the atty. Good thing it came with an extra, not so sure I like it smoke colored and a bit hard to see the level in tank. Looks good on the black set up and makes me one of the cool kids.

Easy build, good flavor. Little popping now and then as I play with the best temp and air adjustment.

Congratz!
Although I see that our vaping preferences are miles apart, I too shall keep a lookout for new parts to improve my vaping experience.
Think I've just about made the "24 hour without analogue" mark, which doesn't make me nicotine free.

Making your own coils seems interesting.
Let me know if it's worth the effort! (although I probz won't be doing so for a while)

Hello @rschaad, glad to hear that things are going well for you.

I can recommend the Exvape Expromizer V4 (reviewed by @Shawn Hoefer) for at least a look, the Acrylic makes things a bit more pocket and occasional drop friendly. I'm still waiting on the 4ml Acrylic bubble though. They're reasonably easy to build, can be completely dismantled for cleaning and you can even adjust the airflow a little more by removing the deck from the base and tightening or loosening the screw.

Top air RTAs
eXpromizer
Still one of the coolest names - ExVape Expromizer V4 Review

@TheGentleman, simple coils aren't that terrifying and steam-engine.org has tools that can help you work out coils that may be of interest to you. To make them you just use round wire and a form such as a drill bit (old school), and then wrap the wire around the form the required number of times. The wicking part can be a pain at times though.

I have an Expromizer V4 @Mordacai and noticed you mentioned here you can adjust the af a little more by removing the deck and tightening or loosening a screw.
Can you please tell me which screw that would be? :)
A bit more flow of that air would be great, only a little:vapor:
