Hi everyone - wanted to do the full intro post in the Canadian forums, seems as good a time as any. I wanted to say a bit about who I am, about my impressions of e-cigs before starting and after, and talk about what I got started with.

About me - I'm a photographer and heavily involved in the world of specialty coffee. I run the CoffeeGeek.com website and have been a smoker for over 20 years. I'm your typical stealth smoker though - a lot of my colleagues in coffee are very surprised to find out I smoke (when they do find out). It's interesting because I know I have a fairly decent palate (I passed the FDA's pretty difficult supertaster test a few times, and qualified as a tasting judge at the International level), but as soon as some people find out I smoke(d) all of a sudden they'd think less of my ability to taste, evaluate and judge coffee. ;)

One caveat though - when I knew I was going to be judging something major, like a regional, national or world barista championship for eg, I'd take my 1.5 pack a day habit down gradually... going to maybe 5 cigs two days before, only a few the day before, and none the day of the competitions, so I could taste the drinks better. Not actually sure if that worked much or not - the big inhibitor to taste is the amount of tar that coats your tongue, and it takes more than a day or two to dissipate.

Anyway, I've tried to quit for years off and on. Tried switching to pipes. Tried just cigars. Tried cold turkey. Tried patch, gum, stupid 6mg inhaler that is the only legal "pseudo cigarette" legal in Canada (Nicorette's lobbying is responsible for that, no doubt). Nothing worked. If anything, I ended up smoking more.

My comments below are laced with "a note for you vets" trying to give an insight to someone who doesn't know squat about vaping and e-cigs.

Before E-Cigs
So I was aware of e-cigarettes a few years ago. Looked into it then, including this website forum; quickly found out that Health Canada had a ban in place and read stories of customs confiscating US shipments. Got discouraged. In all my quitting attempts, it was the action of smoking I missed most, not the nicotine (which I took plenty of, like chewing 4 chicklets of nicogum at a time). Got ...... at my government about it, and moved on.

A note for you vets
For the past two years, I was under the impression that everything about e-cigs was illegal in Canada. Many of my friends think the same thing. Would be good to hyper emphasise the equipment is legal; just the nico-juice isn't.

Okay, so fast forward to this summer. My wife hates that I smoke. When she found out BC would be funding smoke cessation costs starting this fall, she basically forced me to agree to quit, and get the govt-funded items. I told her in turn I think the only thing that would really help me quit is a placebo effect item (what I was calling e-cigs at the time) but they were illegal in Canada. So she went to Poland to visit family in early September, and came back with... a polish branded e-cigarette kit! It is a pen style one. I was intrigued. Said I'd give it a try.

Side note - we found out only a few days ago BC's funded cessation stuff only covers three specific products - two branded nico replacement therapy items (a gum and a patch) and if doc gives a prescription for zyban (whatever the heck it's called), that too. e-cigs a no go, nic free or not.

First e-cigs
So i tried this kit my amazing, beautiful partner brought back for me. I was amazed at what I called "my miniature hooka" (hookas are very popular in Vancouver), but the flavours it came with were horrible. I smoke menthols, and the kit had marbloro (spelled that way) and plain and "coffee" which wasn't even remotely anything like coffee.

BUT... I managed to cut my real analog smoking down to half almost instantly. Within two days, (re)discovered this forum, and finally found out that e-cigs are legal in Canada (well, unregulated), and that only the e-juice with nicotine is not allowed. But also (very happily) discovered there's plenty of nic e-juice resources out there for Canadians who search (I hope this never ends lol!)

In a few days, I spent literally 12+ hours researching, watching vids, reading reviews, edjumacating myself in my typical OCD way. Settled on the bloog system because a) big amount of vape and throat hit from a small package and b- a small, cigarette like package. So I ordered the mini PCC charger system from Happy Vaper (great customer service there - wish they sold e-liquid with punch though) and lots of juices from a few sources.

Well, yesterday and today, everything arrived. And it has now been erm... 36 hours since my last analog!

Note to vets - a lot of you dish out advice about the minis and super minis, re being great intros for smokers looking to quit. That is fantastic advice, but if I could go one further - don't even bother recommending the mods or fatties - speaking for me, I probably wouldn't quit smoking if I was using a device that was NOT "just like" a cigarette at the start. One reason I didn't quit with my wife's purchased kit was because it wasn't a cigarette... it was a pen with a flat mouthpiece.

Newbie's 1 day review of the Bloog
This thing is absolutely fantastic. Of course, it depends on the juice you get, and the two juices I've been using are BestVapour.com's Ice Menthol 24mg and Gentlemen's Reserve GR Rugged Blend with Menthol added (25mg). The GR has more vape and a good throat hit (sidenote - throat hit is a hard thing for newbies to "understand" if they've never had a vape before). The BV Ice Methol is different - less vape, more throat hit, and a real nice chill menthol hit reminiscent of made-in-europe Davidoff menthol cigarettes.

The Bloog... I could not imagine or ask for a better introductory e-cig for someone who wants to quit smoking. Well... maybe a slightly lighter weight (you can tell it's not a cigarette via the weight - which is one of those key factors). Vapour is phenomenal. Size is perfect. Taste is like 100x better than my usual smokes (Peter Jackson Menthols). Even the smell of the vapour is amazing - for what you can smell (sweet, fruity).

I've had to charge the batteries once each in 36 hours (after initial charge), and I'm hitting it all day long, but usually one, two puffs, set aside, 2 mins later, one, two puffs.

The freaky thing for me is this - I seriously do not miss (or crave) the analog. I'm completely amazed by that in fact. I still have a full pack of the aforementioned Davidoffs on the sundeck, untouched.

The other freaky thing for me is how quickly my smoking habit has changed. I've gone from trying to draw out a cigarette for 8 minutes when relaxing (or chain puffing in 3mins if I'm between here and there - smokers know what I mean) to having it go all day long, but only one or two puffs then breaks between lasting between 2 and 30 minutes. Haven't had a puff the entire time writing this so far, so excuse me as I break to have one.

Ahhh. ;)

Anyway, sorry for the ramble. Very long intro so let me end with two things. First, thanks again to everyone who is so welcoming and forthcoming in these forums (my welcome in the newbie forum was fantastic).

Second, I've asked for someone to PM me the list of Canadian e-Juice suppliers a few times in that other thread, but haven't gotten the list yet. I hope I haven't disabled my PM system (checked, doesn't seem to be) could someone pm it to me?

Cheers all

Mark

Awesome story, and welcome!

I started much like you, saw a friend with an ecig, was confused and amazed, researched like an obsessed person, and also started with the bloogs and loved them! I'll admit, 5 months in I hardly use them anymore, but I swear I would have never been able to quit using what I prefer now. I will recommend a bloog over an ego any day!

Good luck and enjoy your new taste buds!

Great story, and welcome to our Canadian Corner of the ECF! :) You should have the list I sent you if someone didn't beat me to it (my apologies agian; the old noodle sometimes takes naps. :D) Although I started with a different PV (a Joye eGo) my story is pretty similar; didn't have any cravings once I picked up my first PV for the first time and was utterly amazed at the lack of cravings and the fact that I neither needed or wanted an analog. All I wanted to do was vape, so that's all I did. And I still love and am amazed by them after all this time, too. I'm on my second attempt to convert my brother-in-law (who finally seems to be more serious about wanting to quit smoking with these this time), and I'm going to be converting an old friend I just recently got back in touch with whenever we get a chance to hook up.

It's been an amazing experience, and continues to be an amazing experience, and I desperately hope that Canadian vendors can manage to successfully come up with regulation proposals Health Canada can get behind so that this amazing experience can be finally and completely legal and widely available here. Because if it does, I'm gonna open up shop, just because i believe in them so much and want to help other smokers discover how awesome they are. :)

Thanks for sharing your story - welcome to ECF and the wide world of vaping.

I had to laugh at the comment about OCD - I have read your website and praised the lord I am not that manic (yet) about coffee (although I do sometimes wonder which pot I shall use of a morning - the Sunbeam C30A 'double bubbler' vacuum pot or a 1940's GE percolator)...

Congrats on your first day without analogs. Great that you found something that works for you to get off the stinkies. Though pretty much everyone is first drawn to something that looks/feels like a real cigarette but migrates on to something else after.

One word of advice on the menthol from another menthol lover. Too much menthol can cause effects similar to smoking with sore lungs and/or shortness of breath. Try and switch it up with other flavours, or a fruit flavour with a hint of menthol is good too.

It's really tough to recommend ecigs to noobies because everyone has their own hangups. Do you want something small and discrete but have to charge up a few times a day? Do you want something that will last you all day but looks like a sharpie? Do you want lots of throat hit, or do you like light smokes? Blah blah blah. It's practically impossible to give a good recommendation without the person writing an essay on their likes and dislikes. And that's not even getting into juice recommendations.

I genuinely enjoyed reading your post. Congrats on your decision, and glad you are enjoying it so far. From personal experience, people either LOVE it the first time, or they don't. I haven't seen many take the middle ground.

I started with an eGo (pen-style), and took to it like a fish to water. I recently received a Volt kit (the same in all but name to your Bloog), and have to agree with you. For such a small device, it performs well. I don't really use it regularly as you have a hard time prying my REO or GLV out of my hands, but it's there as backup.

So thanks for your post, and welcome to our little sub forum :toast:

Welcome to the group, Ilikecoffee. Congratulations in moving towards kicking the smoking habit.

It's great to see another coffee addict here. We roast our own green coffee beans in our house and it has become a quest to find that *perfect* blend of beans. We have been roasting and blending for four years now. Do you roast your own beans as well?

Hi all - thanks for the great welcome once again. Will be answering a few specific posts, but I also wanted to thank everyone for the kind words. Shout outs to Netter (my first e-juice source lol!) Crazy Canuck, Strongz, XSlor (thanks for the list!), Sharon, Chinner, northar, kg, and drac and everyone else.

2.5 days into analog free now. Woot!

Got the list, much appreciated!

Yeah, it's been like that for me mostly too - though today I was staring lovingly at the pack out on the deck... if only for a few moments.

However, I've managed to get a variety of flavours and juices, and besides all the menthols I managed to get, also got one of my favourite "cereal" flavours, apple and cinnamon, and am vaping that this evening. Really enjoying it.

I'm on my second attempt to convert my brother-in-law (who finally seems to be more serious about wanting to quit smoking with these this time), and I'm going to be converting an old friend I just recently got back in touch with whenever we get a chance to hook up.

I've got a few friends who could also do well to quit smoking, and my brother smokes as well. I just don't want to be "that guy" (you know, the recent quitter who wants to go on a mission to make everyone else quit). Maybe if they see how relatively easy it was for me, they may be next. Besides, who knows, in a few months, I may have a lot of equipment to sell if I start "upgrading".

You know, if these devices can REALLY up the ante for smokers in their chances to quit, the federal (and especially the) provincial governments should be doing all they can to get these enabled.

I noted that HC's response to a letter writer was "we are waiting for a company to submit products and pay for testing, yada yada". Well screw you feds and provincials for that matter - you so desperately want people to quit smoking to save on health care costs? Then pay a couple of million dollars to organize a genuine test and safety standards program for these products. Then GIVE THEM AWAY to active smokers. Don't tax the nic-juice either. Subsidize it for a set period.

Bet it would cost a ton less than the current health care burden, and probably cost less than BC's current "pay for gum or patch" program which will barely see a 8% success rate.

I plan on writing my MP (who I'll be honest, is a useless twit unless you're a tree hugger or socialist) about this, once I have a few weeks under my belt. I've been trying to quite for literally decades now (well this is my second decade trying to quit), and this seems my best chance and effort so far. The thoughts of having a cigarette in hand and puffing away aren't a constant nag like all the other times. That's the deal MAKER, IMO.

Nice! Wanna talk OCD? I have a Sunbeam C20B, C20C, C30A, C30B, C30C, C40(b I think), and even a 1060s vintage C50 model. And doubles of some lol ;)

My oldest siphon brewer is actually from 1919, a Silex original pyrex glass model. Has a built in tipper to serve while still in its stand.

Awesome... home roasting is the bomb. I wrote an introductory how to on home roasting for under $20 on CG.

Re your question, yes, I have a few roasters; I had a coffee lab for a while and did a lot of small batch roasting on a Hottop Digital Profile roaster. But my coolest roaster is this one (though it's not really practical):

Hario Roaster by CoffeeGeek, on Flickr

To get back on topic, I don't even think I'm going to try and find a suitable "coffee tasting" e-liquid though; I might end up too critical of the taste.
