New member with some questions.

I'm a former tobacco user, smoker and smokeless tobacco user. The last thing I used was lozenges that I stopped about 2 years ago. Probably sounds insane that I'd think about going back but I have a mood disorder that is much more stable when I'm using nicotine.

If I decide to use a vaporizer, I'd want one that was discrete, not stinky and as safe as they get given the circumstances i.e., no ingredients that aren't necessary. *Forgot to add I'm quite old but in reasonably good health.

Suggest the following starter kit for you. Innokin makes decent quality gear. This ought to be discrete enough as well.

As for ejuice suggest here as a good place to get trust-able juice. You can get flavorings affordably, add some to the unflavored base via recipes.

There are other vendors, other different gear. I get my base juice elsewhere. Not suggesting any other vendors as what is suggested is more/most reputable to point to off hand.

Any links I offer are informational. I do not shill, hawk, affiliate, get paid for promoting stuff. Never have, never will.

HTH.

It might help to know that there are three basic types of vaping right now:

Pod Mods - usually the smallest devices, each puff vapourizes a tiny bit of very-high nicotine juice
MTL (mouth-to-lung) - middle-of-the-road option: more juice per puff, so less nicotine per ml of juice
DL (direct lung) - cloud generators: lots of juice per puff, even lower nicotine per ml

It sounds like pods or MTL would be what you're looking for. DL produces bigger clouds, so it's less discreet and can smell a bit. Fortunately, vaping doesn't usually smell much, as least as long as you stay away from the big clouds.

Vape juice doesn't tend to have a lot of ingredients:
  • Nicotine
  • The carriers: usually a mix of PG (propylene glycol) and VG (vegetable glycerin). They're mixed to get a consistency that works in devices (PG alone is too thin and will leak, VG alone is too thick and won't wick well), although, depending on your device, you can get a workable carrier without PG by diluting the VG with a small amount of distilled water.
  • Flavourings (usually). You can also omit the flavouring if you prefer. VG gives unflavoured ejuice a slightly sweet flavour that I and many others find pleasant. PG alone or in too high a proportion isn't very nice, but it common concentrations it's not a problem.
So, welcome to ECF! I expect we can help you find something that will suit you. If you have any questions about what I've said (or anything else vape-related), go ahead and ask.

You do not indicate where you are from, but assuming that you are in the US, your best bet is to try your local vape shops to see what they have, since shipping vape gear in the US is practically nonexistent, unless you plan to get your stuff from China and wait 3-4 weeks or more for it. This way you are assured of replacements for your particular gear as well. I agree with previous posts that you should start with a pod or a MTL setup. I'd stay away from Smok brand as it is known for subpar quality control. You shouldn't have to worry about the safety of ejuice bought at a reputable smoke shop, as the problems with juice ingredients were from cartridges bought on the black market. I understand the need for using nicotine for anxiety and other mental health issues. I, too, use nicotine for anxiety and depression. It is well known that mental health patients smoke more frequently than others. Good luck.

Not at all crazy. You'll remember that when you first smoked, it elevated your mood. Maybe you even giggled. The mind's own smokescreen gets you past that initial high, but nicotine remains a mood elevator, like coffee does, and like other things.

Without being attached to burning plant matter and dangerous additives, nicotine may be the gentlest and most reliable mood stabilizer.

You're already getting good advice about equipment and liquids. I would only add that you may end up adjusting your nic level in the future.

For discretion, when I'm around other people I vape unflavored liquid. It has its own mild, slightly sweet flavor, but others won't smell anything, and won't object, except for the Karens who spend their lives objecting to everything.

What strength e juice would I start with? I last used 2mg lozenges about 2 per hour.

It depends on which type of device you get, although I can give you a general idea of the ranges for each device. With two 2 mg lozenges per hour, you'd probably want to aim somewhere in the middle of the range for your device.

To start with, there are two measures of nicotine concentration, mg/ml and percent. Multiplying the percent by 10 gives you the mg/ml, so 2% is the same as 20 mg/ml. Pod mods often use percent, while juices for MTL and DL mods are more likely to use mg/ml.

    Common ranges:
    • Pod mods: 2% - 5% (20 - 50 mg/ml)
    • MTL: 6 mg/ml - 20 mg/ml
    • DL: 3 mg/ml - 6 mg/ml
With those ranges you'd get similar amounts of nicotine from the different setups. The different ranges have to do with the amount of ejuice vapourised per puff - you only get a tiny bit of juice through a pod mod, but an awful lot more if you're vaping DL.
