for a while, i was folding on one of my computers with no monitor attached. I have HFM to monitor it and would occasionally remote desktop to it when needed. I have remote desktop setup on all of my computers, makes life easy. Kind of tricky to get it working on all the computers in the house, needed to change the port in the registry and statically assign ip addresses, but it was worth the setup time.

I have no clue what HFM means but I do have remote desktop. It's not setup and I don't have a clue how to do that but I'll figger it out. I'm just not in a big hurry after today's hassle. I HATE working on hardware. But it looks like remote desktop is the way to go.

remote desktop is pretty easy to setup. Setup the computer your connecting to with a username and a password. You must have a password for the user account. Next, assign that computer a static ip address. Most home networks usually start with 192.168.x.x. Just pick one that isn't in use on your network and you should be fine. Finally in your system properties you'll find the area to enable remote connections. Then you should be able to go to your other computer, open remote desktop and put in the ip address that you assigned to that computer, the username and password, and it should connect no problems. If you want to setup remote desktop on other computers on the same network, you'll have to jump through a few more hoops.

oh, HFM.net is a remote monitoring app for all of your folding computers. It monitors all things folding. TPF, PPD, WU's, ETA etc...
Its not hard to setup. I've even got it monitoring computers at the parents house.

They do sometimes make exceptions for couples Remote monitoring is also built in to the v7 folding client already. On the expert screen under clients click the add button and then enter the ip address of the remote computer and you also need to set up a password in the remote tab of the configuration screen and enter it at the bottom of the connection screen when you are entering the ip address of the computer to monitor. Oh and the clients have to be restarted after setting the passwords. I have 4 computers running in my client window

Also you can just use the computer name assigned (eg. \\My_Computer\ ) as opposed to the static IP address if you're not up for the extra steps.

So what you are telling me is I will have to switch my monitor and keyboard back and forth to setup remote desktop. I don't like the sounds of that. It was a pain doing it just once. And I didn't follow everything you said. Do you plan on making a trip to WA anytime soon?

Only the first time you setup Remote Desktop on the box you're remoting into.... after that you won't have to bother with it again.

With regards to the keyboard and monitor.

Wouldn't the IP address be the same on all my PCs since they are all coming through the same modem?

I found where you add the ip address (I think). It says to enter a Name and a value. There is already a name and value (
gpu and true). No idea what that means. Is this where you add an ip address? This is all getting very confusing.

I don't think so. I posted a pic of the back of the 4600, the PC I'm using and I don't see anything like it on the 9100.

And no, the ip addresses for your individual computers will have local ip addresses, not real world ip addresses.

but you can use your computer's NAME instead! So if you named it TM-PC you can use \\TM-PC\ as the hostname instead of the IP address (if you don't want to give it a static IP on your internal network)

First you have to go right click on "My Computer" and select "Properties"

Then there should be a window that opens with a Remote Settings tab, click it.

Under Remote Desktop, Allow connections from computer running any version of Remote Desktop

Click Ok.


You then want to look back on the system properties window and see what your computer name is and write it down. Maybe a good idea to check your IP address too. That's all it takes to setup Remote Desktop.

Yes it is on the system info screen. You only need to setup a password if you are going to setup the remote desktop connection. If your just going to monitor it via the v7 program then no password is needed.
