If anyone has noticed that Bovinia is turning out ~0~ it's because I started a new name to fold under. In this past year I have had 4 friends dx'd with the evil "C" so this is even more personal now than it ever has been!

Does anyone know if something has changed for the core 17 gpu folding? For the last couple of days I've only been getting x15 wus that are not giving the bonus. Just luck of the draw? I was chewing 8900s until the account hit it's 10 wus. I have the advanced flag set.

I did notice a couple of "unstable machine" warnings, so I backed the oc down just a tad, and blew the dust bunnies out of my machine this morning.

Be very careful with unstable machine messages on a new passkey. With only 24 results returned, five failed units will cancel all future bonus points until you return to a successful return rate above 80%.

Do you have the latest non-beta WHQL driver installed? Core 17 is not known to like overclocking but GPU folding is not my forte. Hopefully someone better suited will chime in shortly.

Dusty, that system looks sweet! However, it looks to be designed for gaming really. When it comes to JUST FOLDING, you don't need all the bells and whistles... just need processing power!

That being said, for a folding rig, if you want to fold BA WU's, you'll need at minimum, a 16 threaded (HT counts too) SMP. Outside of that, if you have even more threads to spare, you can then add on some GPU folding.

It all depends on what you're trying to reach. I think its more cost effective to build a folding rig like loft "had" (LOL) a 4P mobo with some affordable AMD procs on it. That alone nets lots of PPD and without use of GPU's.

But if you need to build a rig that functions outside of folding, you can approach it much like I did. It costs more.... a lot more! But then you'll have the flexibility to use it for other needs, like gaming.

You need to start your design with the concept of its function first.

EDIT: BTW, SSD's are unnecessary for folding, so is really fast RAM.

Completely agree, my post was simply from an aspect of general computing. For most people, the hard drive is the choke point. It has never really kept up pace with the processor market.

Natey has asked me to expand on the reason I created CowAgainstCancer, and enlisted some help to get the account going. Nate and I have been talking since he was released from the hospital last week, and it troubles my heart greatly that he has been diagnosed with prostate cancer. It has made Folding even more important, knowing that one of our own family is facing this beast that we all put our resources to work for.

The name is for his family's Dairy Farm here in Durham CT, as well as my own love of cows.

I just fired up another F@H rig a few minutes ago. Once I make sure it's stable I'll switch it over & fold some for CAC. It's my sons computer that I upgraded, so it can fold for 2 weeks at a time while he's at work.

I put my current wu on finish. It still has about 9 hours or so to go. So once it's finished, I'll switch over for about a month.

Thank you all so much for the prayers and well wishes, i haven't been on much because i physically and mentally don't feel well, but i just wanted to thank you all for the support in something i thought; "That could never happen to me". But have seen what it does to past friends of mine. I've also learned between this and all my other health problems, that life is full of surprises, twists and turns. Don't take life for granted, and live each day as if it was your last.

I do want to thank Bov for helping me tell you all about this. As she said we have been talking and for me it was hard to find the words to open up and explain what has been going on. As you all could imagine, its personal and really hard to come to terms with it.. So i had asked for her help, as she graciously accepted...

But again thank you all for folding and the kind words, and of course just being you......
