Just talked to a counselor with ALA. Get ready for an argument. She was very anti e-cig. Very negative health side effects (like what) Vaso constrictor (What about Parkinson's risk reduced by 50%) I don't know about that. Patches work better ( 5% of people quit versus 85%- how is that better) I don't believe that statistic. (Check it out- maybe you need more information) People use them to get nicotine with not really wanting to quit. (So- they don't contain 4000 chemicals- how is that bad for your health?) I'm not going to argue with you. ( Good because you are wrong- with no personal experience- I am a registered respiratory therapist who smoked 1-2 packs a day for 28 years and quit 11 weeks ago in 3 days using a PV. How is that bad for me? I don't wheeze or cough. I get a full undisturbed nights sleep every night. I have several friends who have quit also. It is a miracle for 85% of us who use to smoke.) Continued success and congratulations on quitting. What is your zip code?

She did not have enough info about PV and she did not want my opinion. She can't and won't support induction of any chemicals into the lungs. Fortunately, I have the facts and was able to use her pretty good. Go ahead and call- just be ready with your facts.

Scross1 OUTSTANDING POST!! I knew they were like this.... I also called them a few weeks ago lol.

I left that part out of this post because I wanted people to see for themselves and not take my word on it where the ALA people stand. How can they be so rude to someone asking about the ecigarette? She got pissy with me as soon as I mentioned it LOL!

If enough of us call them I guarantee it will be put up their chain of supervision! Together we can help change the mind of the ALA who are supposed to care for our health!

I hope people who call do so with the intent to inform rather than harass.
Harassing and insulting e-cig detractors isn't helpful no matter how obnoxious, stubborn, ignorant or misinformed they are even if it seems fun. There's no harm in being respectful.
Ultimately it reflects on the rest of us. We want to win them over not alienate them.

I think scross1's conversation serves as a great model for an informative conversation.
Yes. By all means have your facts straight, check your attitude and think about what you want to achieve before placing such a call.

She was instantly angry and it was hard not to get angry back. I had the phone on speaker so my 27 year old son could hear and he said what a b..ch. I did keep my cool but she did not want to let me get a word in or ask any questions. I used to donate money to these people. I think I'll donate to the Whale Wars people- Sea Shepherds. The world is a vampire.....

Hi Y'all. I just got informed about this thread by a person on the forum. I'll get my facts together and give a call too....it may be next week sometime, but I'll give a try.

Does anyone have a name of anyone at the ALA that has the authority to make policy changes. Talking to whomever picks up the phone will do very little to advance the cause of e-cigs and will only get us hung up on when the topic is brought up. Perhaps a letter writing campaign would be a better start.

If I'm not mistaken, and I don't think I am, the folks that man the ALA quit line are volunteers reading scripted information. Please don't hurt them too bad for their good intentions.

Copies of this signed petition will be mailed out to the whole alphabet soup gang ALA, FDA, AHA, AMA etc.

E-Cigarettes Save Lives - A Petition for Policy Change

If you haven't signed it yet, have at it!

:2c:
I've said this before somewhere but Here I go again. We're made of chemicals, very very complex ones. The air we breathe has a chemical composition to it, as does every type of food we eat. I mean by crikey did you know that every breath we inhale contains molecules of Alexander the Great.

I called and talked to them about e-cig and how I quit cigarettes with it. I told him how my plan is to eventually be off e-cigarettes in one year slowly reducing my nicotine levels every order and that its been working flawlessly so far. He was extremely interested and had thanked me for calling.

He also said they aren't taking a stance on it because the FDA hasn't approved it or disproved it.

Overall he seemed happy that I found my way to quit smoking cigarettes and that I am not taking in 4000 chemicals and instead only taking in 1.

ALA = +1 in my phone call :) I'm very pleased with the outcome

Update: I called again now nearly 3 months later. I got a hold of a new employee who was very attentive to what I had to day. I felt it was time to call again because of how aggressive the FDA is being to take my e-cig away lately. Basically all I did was tell her to look into the "American Association of Public Health Physicians". I myself have no credability when I say the E-cig has increased my health exponentially. But the AAPHP is a society of doctors that have been around since the 1950's. Their only goal is to fight for our health!!

She promised me she would look in to it and forward it up her chain of command =)
