Just got my first mod today, after 11 months of vaping with ego batteries and Natilus tank. Just really wanted more battery life. Went to my local B&M and got Smok Nano One kit (TFV4 nano tank and R-Steam mini). Also 2 new 18650 batteries and charger. (BTW - already regretting the purchase because of the TINY tank capacity, 2ml).

B&M dude set the mod up for me and said 20 watts would be a good place to start, which is where I kept it. I came home and primed the coil (the pre-installed one, 3.5 I think). Used same juice I have been using for a while. Have the air holes opened most of the way. After a few drags, I notice it is super hot at tank and tip!! Like burn your lips hot - unless I wait 2 minutes between pulls. :nah: I have read the booklet (small!) and watched you tube reviews, and find no help. B&M store is not very close by.

Am I doing something wrong? I am ready to go get my God-forsaken, no power, ego batteries and old tank just to get a vape fix - ugh! Please help if you can :)

What batteries are they? Brand and model number?

3.5 ohm seems pretty high. Do you have a way to measure the resistance? You should have a resistance meter on your regulated mod.

Chain vaping on a sub-ohm coil (if indeed it is) will normally cause the tank to get quite hot. You might be able to fit a non-metal (ie delrin) drip tip or mouthpiece onto your tank.

The batteries are Imren, IMR 3.7V Max 40A, 3200MAH

Booklet says kit comes with a .3 preinstalled, and an extra .25 coil. The .25 is still in box so the .3 is in the tank

Non metal tip sounds very logical, just as long as I am not about to blow this thing up because of the heat. Is chain vaping taking more than 3 hits in a row?

Can't quite get the hang on the menu yet to see if I can check resistance on screen (which I think means to get to a screen where it tells me what coil is in there??)

Thanks

The battery that you are using is known as a rewrap or rebranded battery. The companies who make these often exaggerate the specifications to get consumers to buy their batteries. Battery Mooch is a professional who works in the battery field who bench tests batteries for a living; he has found most of the Imren batteries to be over-rated:

Imren Green 40A 3200mAh 18650 Bench Retest Results...just 17A, the purple Imren 3000mAh rewrapped!
Imren Green 40A 3200mAh 18650 Bench Retest Results...now 10A, shame on you Imren!

So, your batteries are not as good as the "manufacturer" claims they are.

Are You Using a Rewrap (Rebranded) Battery?

  • Learn what a rewrap cell is. If you are using rebranded cells, does that mean it is inferior, poor quality, or even dangerous? Which batteries are suspected to be rebranded batteries?

Do a search on YouTube for your specific battery device and find a nice tutorial/review. There are several, the following is just one of them:

Baditude - thanks so much!

Dang it - I watched the latest Mooch video, and read a lot - and I specifically asked if it was a re-wrap and the B&M dude said no. I asked for a brand name one - they only had this brand. And he said these were the BEST and showed me he uses them. OMG I HATE being at the mercy of those kids! I REALLY try to educate myself and read and watch videos, I swear! But some of it is over my head and the kids at the B&Ms end up talking me in circles. They should be ashamed of themselves. This is why I have waited so long to go beyond a closed battery system - because of the batteries and how it can be dangerous. Ugh! Almost enough to make me go get the cigs that have been in the trunk of my car for 11 months :(

Appreciate the links - back to 'school' for me!

Hi Liz, First thing, double check and make sure that your mod is really running at 20 watts. 20 watts is not terribly hot but on a small tank the heat can build up pretty quickly.

Batteries - 20 watts at 3.5 volts is only 5.7 amps so you're probably safe there. Just be sure that it's the tank that's getting hot and not the mod.

Backing the power down even 2 or 3 watts should cool it down without wrecking the vape quality. Small tanks really do get hotter.

Baditude's suggestion of a non-metal drip tip is good too. I found a large glass mouthpiece for a hot tank I have, it eventually broke of course but it really helped save my lips.

BTW - I still use my egos sometimes when I'm out and about but I always take a spare 'cause I know it won't last.

Keep on Vapin'
