Howdy, I'm quite new to vaping and could use some direction. I've got an istick pico 75watt using a .3ohm coil. I just changed my coil and filled up with a toffee cream ejuice. I'm having a hard time finding a good setting for my vape. Sometimes tastes quite harsh.
I just need an idea or range I should set my watts to so any suggestion would be awesome. I've turned it up gradually but can't find a good spot. Higher temp gives me a a thicker cloud and feels like a good drag but doesn't taste great, I get a funny after taste.. doesn't taste good turned down either.. too low and I barely get a puff.
I'm also wondering if anyone knows about the m1,2 & 3 mode. I've read the manual but really didn't help. Are these modes I can use with kenthal? I can set a temp in feriheight but I don't know how high or low I should be going either! I've read reviews about the pico and many say it's a decent starter kit but I feel like mine could be a lot better. Help me dial it in!!! please!!

Kaili,
I have never had any good experiences with the Eleaf 0.3 coils for some reason.
You might want to try a different ohm coil instead.
The M settings are for memory. If you switch out to a different coil, type of coil, and want to keep the wattage setting you can do so in one of the M settings instead of having to write it down or remember it.

First make sure to prim your coil, fill tank and let it sit for 10-15min. Then start at a lower wattage and slowly work up til it feels okey. Use the guidelines that are on the coil.

If you want to run it in TC you should get other coils. M1-3 is just so you can fine-tune your TCR-value. Think one of there TC coils are called ECL and are in SS316L and can be vaped in both power and TC mode.

Don't try and run Kanthel in TC.

I personally found it very hard to vape with a coil of that resistance or lower, I'd either get crazy clouds, way too much vape, and had to suck it directly into my lungs, which is not my preferred style of vaping. Or, I'd go down on wattage and get weaker, but still unsatisfying vape, and nic overload even on lower nic juices was just way too much. I'd second trying some coils with some higher resistances, the good thing about your tank is that there are other coil options. My sweet spot for vaping seems to be 0.7 to 1.8 coils, but I do mouth to lung vaping at higher nicotine levels when using different coils and resistances.

No, you cannot use kanthal in TC mode, though other coils are safe to do so such as SS or Ti. Nickle is kind of tricky and I'd probably stay away from that.

Best of luck figuring out what works for you, you do have lots of options. Hope you find your sweet spot.

HI and welcome. Like others here, I think you're using a coil not suitable for whatever you want in a vape, or possibly have a bad one. From your description I think you will want a slightly higher coil resistance. Assuming you bought the Pico 75 kit, you're probably using the Melo 3 tank with the pre-installed .3Ω Kanthal coil. That coil is supposed to range between 30-80 watts. You should have gotten a .5Ω Kanthal coil as well as a replacement, which coil is rated 30-100 watts. I suggest you try the .5 coil and vape it in the 30=40 watt range (start lower to break it in at first). Note, please, Kanthal coils must be set up in wattage mode; Temperature Control mode is for different types of wire. AFAIK, the only coil for your tank suitable for TC work is the .15Ω Ni200 coil. I personally hate Nickel wire and wouldn't ever try it. Better wires-- better tasting, IMHO-- for TC work are Titanium and Stainless Steel, but I don't think your tank has those types of coils. (Stainless has the additional benefit of being able to run in wattage or TC mode. I use SS316 wire almost exclusively.)

As for the occasional harsh hit, I think you are having wicking trouble. The wick in your machine isn't able to keep up with your vape style. That could be design or, again, you may just have a bad one. Lowering wattage, lowering % of VG in your juice and slowing the pace of hits will all improve wicking. Changing to a higher resistance value coil will also probably help as higher coils are generally vaped at lower wattage.

The memory cells are simply shortcuts for favorite settings. I don't have your mod, but most of them can be set up to any setting the mod can do. This is to make it easy to "dial in" the vape for different tank or coil setups. I don't know how to do it on your machine, but generally you get into the memory program, set the mod to anything you like, and save it. Then, the next time you go to that memory cell, there your settings will be. It is perfectly possible to set one memory to wattage mode for a high-value coil and a different one to TC mode for another coil. Many people like to use different tanks; a "stealth vape" tank for work, and a cloudier one at home. These memories make it easy to switch. Put on the stealth tank, set M1 or whatever, and you're good to go. Then get home, switch tanks, set M2 and you're back in business.

From the manual of pico 75w.
Read from page 5 and you see that M1-3 is TCR values and have nothing to do with memory of different tanks, it's just a more advanced part of TC vaping.

Tbh i wouldn't try to do temp settings and don't worry about anything other than watts when you first start. Note that sometimes you can get a bad batch (i for one had one recently that didn't taste of anything for me no matter what watts i had on it) mine was suposed to be blue slush but didn't taste anything ahah. I call that smoker's taste :p that's why i started with fruity flavors easy to recognize for me. Haven't used the pico though........ But no kanthal is not really made for tc setting (it's not titanium, nickel or stainless which are usually the options) i know there's kits that do kanthal tc mode but i don't know which ones.

Welcome to ecf and grats on quitting the stinkies btw :D

The 0.3 is a straight Kanthal / Watts coil head. Don't use TC. I don't know about memory settings on the Pico. I've not used them nor would I try again. I also don't remember being able to adjust the watts within TC so it didn't suit my needs. Basically I wouldn't want to vape on a mod that tries to hit at 75w and instantly reduces the power to a pathetic wisp of vapor as the TC kicks in and ruins the experience.

I love TC but it's nothing anyone should start with. If setup correctly it's a wonderful experience, can be setup so you always get the temperature you want or so you never get a dryhit.

But at start the most important thing is just to stop smoking and wattage mode is just great for that, keep it simple at start, use high nicotine and dial in wattage after what your coil say and like I said before, start low and slowly ramp up wattage til you get where it nice for you.

I also have had poor luck with TC in general and gave up on it. For TC you need stainless coils anyway. If your coil is kanthal it just won't work

Well stainless or not you can still use those coils in wattage mode it's mostly preference though (i for one prefer a cooler vape with a somewhat nice throat hit i get from higher nic)

I really tend to Agree with this.

Especially during that First 2 Weeks after smoking one's Last Cigarette where it can seem that the Entire World seems to be Conspiring against you.

TC can be Great. But it can Also be Finicky sometimes to set up when a person is New to TC.
