Help with Passthru

I purchased a passthru for my Joy510 as the batteries don't last too long. I also work at home from my laptop and this is the perfect solution. The only problem I am having is with the laptops USB power..it must not provide 5v , (the passthru works fine from on my desktop but not my laptop).

I have seen posts about external USB devices that will plug into an outlet and provide the required 5v. I have tried my IPHONE and Kindle chargers but they don't work. Does anyone know what the external devices are called or have a link they could direct me to? Thanks for the help.

I bought an AC/USB adapter at Target and it works great. Just look around the electronics area, wouldn't be surprised if WalMart has them, too. I also got a USB adapter for my car cigarette lighter and can now use the PT in the car.

I think it's a good idea to use an adapter even if your USB port on your computer works. If anything goes wrong, it can fry your computer. It's a heck of a lot cheaper to buy an adapter.

Make sure you get one rated at least 2000MA or 2amps. Thats probably why your chargers don't work because they're under 2 amps.

Thanks for the tip. The odd thing is the atomizers originally worked on my passthru when connected to my laptops USB port but eventually quit working. They still work when connected to the batteries or my desktop.

I read here somewhere that when you use a laptop not plugged in, the voltage drops from 5v.

If you can't get one at Target or Walmart Id try Ebay or an electrical outlet, I;ve seen them pretty much all over - I got mine here 2 amp AC to USB Adapter, ideal for Passthroughs but htey are currently out of stock - not sure how long beofre they have any.

I am using the direct passthru without the inline battery. Would the 2 amp requirement still apply? I am just wondering because it came with a car adapter that is only rated at 500MA. I am looking on Ebay and am having a rough time finding an adapter rated >=2000MAH. Sorry for all of the questons.

Is is safe to assume that with the battery, it can "trickle" charge, but for direct use with no battery inline it needs more amps to start the "fire" in the atty?

My Basic Electronics is a bit rusty, but wouldn't that be basically using the battery as a Capacitor?

The other part is, I use my laptop HP/Compaq nc6230 on a Docking Station. One of the USB ports on the side has a "+" plus sign on it, any clue if that may mean powered? What about the ports on a Monitor?

You're not that rusty. ;-) The 510 PT with the inline batt doesn't need a one amp charger. It's just that if you don't already have a usb plug, it's wise to get at least a 1 amp - which will drive most other PT's except for the KR8 which needs 2 amps. But you don't need that much with the inline battery types of PTs.

Hellen suggests the one at Walgreens - I believe it's one amp and would be good for the 510 PT - good price usually too.

Because there's a battery inline with the 510 passthrough, the charger is charging the battery rather than running the ecig on current from the charger. So the amount of amperage the charger puts out is not as crucial as for other passthoughs.

And.... not all passthroughs have batteries and are run directly from the current from the charger. So with those types, you need current from the charger not a battery, so you need more amperage (power).

Most (including myself) recommend getting at least a 1 amp charger if you don't have one already, in the event you get another device that requires more amperage than is needed to charge the 510 PT battery. So... if you don't have one, get one that is at least one amp - sometimes written as "output: 5V at 1 amp" or "output: 5V at 1000ma" (ma= milliamps) And most of the time that is somewhere right on the charger itself.

Also, there are 'dual usb' chargers. If they are rated 1amp or 1000ma - that could mean that is only 500ma per channel. Just so you know. ;-)

I had the same problem only with my desktop. I ordered the 2 amp usb connector from MadVapes and my problem was solved.

A big YMMV on that. There's some report them going out in a week. I had 4 going between my wife and I for about 5 months before I totally switched over to Bartlebys and other mods. I still have mega batts going with Low Resistance atomizers (not recommended by manufacturers but highly recommended by DC2 and myself ;-)

Anyway, never had a problem with any of them. Never had to change batteries and kept the cable in good shape. If you abuse the cable it is one of the thinnest ones out there and could break - the cable is likely to go before the batt. But don't fall for the overdone ones though - they're like a ball and chain! :-\
