I'm getting a throat irritation from some of my premixed liquids, and have some confusion over what might be causing it. Reading, and reading more, and a little more, from here and google is providing me with a couple of clues as to what might be causing this. Since I'm just about about ready to dive in and experiment with mixing my own, it might be prudent to see what others think.

So far, it appears that the 18mg and higher nicotine liquids will cause this for me, where the 12mg liquids tend to be less abrasive. Three weeks ago, I was a two-pack a day analog smoker, so I'm not sure it's the nicotine. I also use high PG liquids around (80%) due to the 510-T I use to burn these liquids. I've read that higher PG might cause the irritation.

Can someone expound on this please?

thanks

Thanks for the links and all.

I do get that dry mouth in the morning, I drink coffee all day and night. I guess it could be the PG instead of the nicotine.

Without knowing what the ratios that are used in the 12mg and 18mg liquids, it could still be the PG and not the nicotine levels or it could be both. I was sort of leaning towards the nicotine since it was more severe with higher level nicotine juice, but now, I'm not sure. It appears more water during the waking hours would be the best way to determine which is the problem.

Steve it is most likely the high PG in your mixes. I would suggest either a 50/50 pg/vg ratio, or higher vg. If you are DIY use slightly more flavor. It is true less nic with give you a little less Throat Hit, but its small in comparison to the PG. Change your ratio and you'll feel the difference.

In my own experience, PG, alcohol, and higher nicotine content can all increase irritation.

I can switch from 18mg/ml to 24mg/ml without much trouble, as long as I vape proportionately less.

I can only use around 1% or less when using alcohol-based flavorings, or I get throat irritation.

If I go higher than 20-30% PG, I also noticeably increase irritation level.

85% VG + 15% distilled water causes me no irritation whatsoever.

For now, I'm using a JoyeTech 510-T to vape with. I've been told that higher VG liquids might not vape as well due to the wick design of these devices. Funny thing, I got a sample of a premixed the other day with higher-than-normal nicotine that produced a lot more smoke than I usually get with the draw I put on the 510-T. The sample label didn't have the specifics other than the nicotine level, but I know the VG level can be about double what I normally order, so I'm guessing I got the higher VG sample and it was really smooth.

Since I haven't ordered any nic juice or flavors yet, I can't really experiment to see what works and what doesn't work. I have a feeling that the 510-T will do higher VG levels than I've been told.

Thanks for the kind responses.

IMO, it is probably as a result of being a fairly new vaper. It takes a while. You might notice nasty stuff when coughing. It took my body a few months to get rid of the crap and to adjust to the PG and VG. I've been told that VG affects the coughing. You might also drink a lot more pure water to help with the adjustments.

Are you losing taste/smell as well? I believe when I lose taste/smell, it's due to a low pH level in the mouth. You should totally try higher VG juice and also try rinses with baking soda, calcium carbonate dissolvable pills, or other antacids. Make sure your atty isn't burned out or putting out harsh vapor. I had some color changes and other things in the mouth/throat around 3 week in, went away after 1-2 weeks. Make sure you aren't using a bad atty...

I found that any recipe with citrus in it made me cough...I started with premade juices and out of the 11 initial purchases 2 make me cough. All were 50/50 12mg.- I emailed the vendor about the 2 flavors and they said the common flavor of both were citrus. Who knows, it is worth looking into and playing around with flavors, ratios and the ph balance- part of the fun actually....hope you are well.

PG has more throat hit. 100% VG has almost no throat hit. A mix of the two is where you will find satisfaction. High nic levels will also contribute to more throat hit, but we need the nic to stay away from cigs, so reducing PG content is that answer.

You will find juices with identical mix ratios and nic content that have harsh or no TH. Dekang Desert Ship has almost non while 3&5 and DK-TAB are high TH. Both of those I vape at 24mg. It's a trial and error process to match juice to your preference. Sample packs are a good way to do that.

PG creates "throat hit" some people have a sensitivities to PG. I would decrease your PG ratio (there is PG in most flavors & bases too). PG is also a humectant (induces or sustains a state of dryness). Alcohol used in flavors & cutting also dries. Most new vapers don't drink enough water while vaping.

VG creates "vapor" 100% VG juices put out a cloud.

So.....could be a sensitivity to PG or you're not drinking enough water while vaping or a combination. try lowering the PG ratio & drink water & see if it helps. If not...try going 100% or close VG

I haven't smoked in 10 months. I just made the switch to 100% VG for what may be PG sensitivities. i don't mind the no "TH" & love the vaper of VG.
Finding great flavors that I just enjoy to vape eliminated my TH desire.

Having just quit smoking the TH may be more imortant to you but finding a balance with flavor may lessen that for you too.
Good Luck!
