I like to keep some 24, 26, and 28 gauge on hand, as that covers the majority of builds I do (and most people, to be honest).

You can use the Steam Engine coil wrapping calculator (<- clicky) to play with potential coils/gauges/etc. and figure out what gauge will serve you the most multi-purposed use.

Thanks for that calculator @nyiddle , that will be useful. I'm just gonna do single and dual coils, nothing to fancy since I'm just starting off. So I guess I should buy 24-26 and 28? Just to have some variety...

Yeah that's not a bad place to start. I'd actually revise my suggestion and say you might want a broader range. Maybe get 24, 28, 30? 26 ends up being my most commonly used wire, but 24 and 28 are equally useful. Either way, within the 24-30 range you'll be able to build a slew of coils, both basic and fancy. It's only when you start trying to make claptons/zipper/etc coils that you need very specific gauges (ie: 32 and 24).
