Waffle, that subpar image editing program you use have different layer types? If so, just make a layer above your base image with the endcap area filled solid black (or other color) and set this layer to "overlay". This will color the endcaps while allowing the texture and highlights/shadows to show through.

2.8x4(3 for little Chuck) as Wafflestomper stated. 72DPI I would consider the minimum. 150DPI I think is ideal as the file size is still relatively small and anything larger is overkill (IIRC the human eye can't differentiate beyond 125DPI?). Keep in mind though if you're send "parts" that will need to be manipulated that you should always err on the larger size. I normally do PS stuff at 300-600DPI and then reduce at the end as it gives the you the most flexibilty and great quality.
