This came up in another thread so I thought I'd post this for people that take their BP at home and have high blood pressure. If you haven't done so, take your machine to your doctors office so you can compare readings between yours and theirs. Mine was measuring 17 over on systolic and 16 over on diastolic. This was a very highly rated device.
If you're one of those 25% of people that never take your blood pressure or go to the doctor because you think you're healthy you might want to rethink that no matter what age you are. Just think how cool e cigs will be in 30 years. :)

Ya know, I am not fond of docs & "traditional" USA medical community or the FDA etc.

Several generations ago, it was considered acceptable for your blood pressure to be 100+your age. (I know. I know. I should quote my source, but I can't remember. Sorry. :( )

Now the medical community has recently lowered it from an acceptable 120/80 to something lower than that. Why? Well I think it is to sell more medicine. Take medicine, then you have to have more doc visits to see if the medicine is working correctly. Side effects of the medicine? Here, take this other pill, it will help you with the dizziness. Ringing in your ears? Go see a specialist. On & on it goes.

I had a BIL who felt the same way. Now my sister is a widow at 45 with 4 kids to support.

Just a note: Walgreen's and Wal-mart have certain days they offer free blood pressure checks. The only automatic blood pressure machine that is accurate is the OMRON HEALTHCARE® I have my husband use one when I am not around.

Blood pressure is a indicator of health status. :)
My dh was running in the 140/80's before....he ended up with quintuple bypass surgery.

My recommendation is solely expressed as opinion.

I know most major hospitals are just now learning they have been taking BP measurements wrong and have adopted new standards. Wait 30 minutes or more after drinking a caffeinated drink or using nicotine. Sit upright with your back supported and your arm in a rested position. Give yourself a couple minutes to settle then take it.

I had them tell me I was going to have a stroke once and I had brought my own BP meter that registered regular readings.
