OK I just read a thread saying there was some confusion about IP and the resale of these for profit.... I'm not sure I even want to crack open that can of worms. I'm gonna have to keep digging.

Which thread? I've seen that before, but I was thinking it was the Scubagen tanks rather than the Genesis. I'm sure you can get around that either by making the build plans available (similar to making the source code available for GPL-licensed software) or by making a minor modification. Zen~ apparently gets away with it with his Z-attys. How is a Z-atty not a Genesis?

The most important components, a stainless steel mesh wick wrapped with kanthal, are public domain and are indeed created by the end user. The rest is just details that can be changed and rearranged if necessary -- a modular top cap that can be plugged and unplugged for needle-less filling, or a Pyrex tank instead of plastic (which was ostensibly already the plan anyway).

The intent behind the restriction, if I recall correctly, was to prevent a vendor from profiteering, from patenting and locking customers into something proprietary (like the Apex Alpha's feeding system). That's what the inventor wanted to avoid. You, on the other hand, will not prevent a single person or company from making his own variant. If you wouldn't care to link that thread where you read that, I'll find you a solution. :)

You won't be profiteering. You'll be supplying the demand.

Agreed, a slight tweek would need to be made to avoid any issues, here's the thread I found. First post: Rebuidable atomizer- The Zenesis PV, Genesis Atomizer | Guide To Vaping

Well, that's it, then. Just do what Zen~ does. Sell the tank and include instructions on how to season the wick and wrap the kanthal. What you're selling will be a kit, rather than an atomizer. And Zen~ isn't the only one who does this, it seems.

I'm still having trouble tracking down the actual plans and the license. What I want to find out is whether it's the horseshoe wick design of the Scubagen that's IP locked, or the vertical Genesis wick, or the entire design from stem to stern.

Oh my God I'm brilliant! I just thought of something. Sell the top and bottom stainless parts of the Genesis without the tank, or make them an available upgrade for the carto tank top and bottom in your already existing Designer Glass Tanks. So you'll have three options for the caps -- black, cobalt and rebuildable atomizer. It's just a premium option on the Designer Glass Tanks, rather than a stand-alone Genesis.

LOL, that is pretty genius. if you come across the plans and shoot them over to me and I'll start looking into getting some kits together for people. :toast:

Awesome. The only plans I've seen are for the Scubagen (which you can find on the first result of a Google search of "Scubagen plans"). From what I've read, the straight vertical wick is preferable to the Scubagen's horseshoe wick. I haven't seen any plans for that particular design, though. But if you want, as soon as I receive my Genesis Mini I can send it to you and let you play with it for a few days and copy it?

For sure, let's keep in touch. I might end up just buying a couple of them so I have them around to compare to. Or at least buying a kit to see what's what.

I was building the small rebuildable dripping atomizers, not the Genesis-style, but I'll buy one if they become available.

I shot rojo a link to the tutorial for the dripping atomizer, but if you guys have questions or want another person to bounce ideas off of, I'm game, I have 2 of the 3 popular Genesis Atomizers :D

EDIT: I also have an Ato-Miser that will be here on Saturday as well. I got tired of popping $9 Cisco 510's so I decided to get a production rebuildable dripping atomizer.

I can already think of an improvement I'd make to the Genesis. Bore out the fill hole, thread it with a tap, and stop it up with a thumb screw (example).

I'd also thought about trying to hack up a rubber stopper myself (like one of these) to make a homemade Genesis-style atty. This would be cheaper and easier to sculpt than stainless, and would have the added advantage of not needing to be insulated to avoid shorts, nor would there be any O-rings to wear out. I'm not sure whether heat radiating from the coils would be a factor though.

I'd be worried about the rubber melting on those for sure.

OK, just for everyone else who missed it, HDE is now carrying custom, hand-blown designer tanks. You can find them in the Designer Glass tanks section on our website. Each one is custom made and is it's own little work of art. Many with a high level of detail all the way around the tank. Most of these tanks are between 2-4mm thick and EXTREMELY durable.

We will have a section up soon that will also allow you to submit your own custom designs for tanks as well.

Note to L7: I submitted your requested specs to the glass blower who said he can make the tank with these alone and a digital caliper.

To anyone else with tank requests, if you have the dimensions I should be able to have the tank made per your specs. Hit me up via email with your design requirements.

A silicone stopper would work, though. The melting point would be more than twice that of boiling water. Hmm, but silicone might not be stiff enough to keep the electrical leads upright. I'll have to think about this. Maybe viton?

Ooh, check this out. It already has a hole for positive, negative, wick and feed. It's 16mm in diameter (according to a similar listing on eBay), it's reasonably cheap, it's extremely heat and chemical resistant, and I might have to get a couple of these for my evil experiments. Hey Brewtus, what's the inside diameter of the top and bottom lips of your glass tanks?
