Higher OHMS = sinus issues, cough?

Hi all,

Just about two months into vaping so it is still kinda new to me. Forgive me if this is the wrong forum for such a question.

I have recently been using a Vivi Nova with the changeable heads. When I vape using the 1.8 OHM head on my KGO I have no issues. Just two days ago I got an Ego Twist and used the same head on that with no issues operating at a low voltage - around 3.4 mark.

Well, I wanted to get the most out of my twist so experimented with the same liquid on a different head, the 2.4 OHM. I have to turn the voltage up to 4 on my twist for best flavor. It tastes kinda "rough" but I seem to get a better TH from it. I should mention anything above the "4" mark results in a burnt taste. Where I am using it right now is just before that burning taste.

Anyway, with the 2.4 at this setting I get chest tightness and sinus irritation. Very similiar to what I had when smoking. I also get a very dry but very light cough. Is this something that anyone has encountered before? Maybe something to do with pushing more power where I am actually starting to inhale some burned/toxic vapor since I am so close to the threshold? Or is it to do with the OHM heads?

My best guess is that it is not the atty's OHMs that is causing the problem, but the increase in voltage. The added voltage is increasing the amount of vapor being produced at the hotter temperature. The clouds of vapor are nice to see, but your body is having an adverse effect from it. Try turning down the setting a notch to see if things improve.

Yeah that was one suspicion. They do improve if I turn it down. Which is annoying but thankfully I like the lower voltages on my 1.8 more than higher on 2.4. Wondering more about the "why" of it really. Is it as simple as more clouds of vapor like you mentioned?

Since everyone's body chemistry and health history is different it would be difficult to give you an exact cause of your problems. Whether the generous volumes of high voltage vapor is drying out membranes or your body is reacting to a denser concentration of chemicals it is tough to say. I would just tune it down and enjoy.

Thanks. Have you ever seen this before with anyone? I agree, once I am able to vape I am happy and it tastes better at my chosen voltage to me so im good.

Like I originally said..... it's my "best guess" based on your symptoms. Through the years here at ECF I've seen a variety of posts from folks experiencing a variety of problems. In your situation, the problems seem to start with the higher voltage vaping so it is only logical to turn down the voltage to a level that offers enjoyment rather than discomfort.

You are getting slightly more wattage at 2.4 ohms and 4 V than 1.8 ohms and 3.4 V. I calculate 6.7 W vs 6.4 W, which could be noticeable. I agree with roxette: it is likely the 2.4 ohm carto is not staying wet enough, and it is easy to let it dry out a bit and get nasal irritation, which I believe may arise from juice decomposition on a coil getting too hot (juice keeps it from getting too hot in general).

Unfortunately some cartos get into a permanent state of too dry, and no amount of juice added will fix it. That's when its time to toss the carto and start fresh.

OTOH if you have any aversion to PG (drying, mouth/nosal irritation), higher wattage can make that more pronounced. If you are using a fresh carto and its well-wetted, you might try some 100% VG juices to see if that solves it.

Good luck!
