Been vaping a few months - and its being noted by people my batteries are getting bigger / devices looking less cig a like and attracting comments that they are surprised I have not managed to "wean myself off it yet"

I have played with my nic levels and have been just dandy on 8mg the last mix session - I tend to use about 5ml a work day to 8ml a weekend day

I never intended to quit - I really enjoyed smoking and made no secret of it
I used to get "the look" from the boss and colegues at work when popping out for a cig or dawdling at the gates finnishing one off.I no longer have to leave the premises and come back stinking like I'd rolled in a ashtray

I don't do it indoors in the office if others are in there - but everywhere outside (and on our permises is fair game as far as I'm aware)
I do get snide comments from the bosses and collegues still but my skin is pretty thick and I have not specifically been told I cannot do it

It's funny the smokers usually try to light up when I get my PV out and I have to remind them its a no smoking site..LOL

Initially I was pretty evangelical when I discovered e-cigs - wanted to quit working and become a reseller
Couldn't understand why I had not discovered them earlier so made sure everyone I knew that smoked had a play with the "device of the day" or "flavour of the day"
I'm pretty sure at least one or two of them will go on to purchase an ecig on the back of it

People look at me oddly when I say my vaping has inadvertantly and unexpectedly turned into a hobby itself
I do try to explain that there are so many variables and facets to it and its attractive to me as it combines electronics, physics and chemistry- so whats not to like

I guess if you were to say that smoking was a "hobby" and there many forums for it it would get the same odd looks and comments

Rob

It is funny (to me)
I can almost see their eyes glazing over

If they don't want to know what it is I am doing or whats in it or how does it make "smoke" like that- surely they shouldn't ask

Maybe I'm just too verbose when they do ask - maybe they really aren't that bothered with what ohmage the coil is and what % ratios of what I mix at?? :p

I'll just reply "caramelly magic" next time and see if the response is more almong the lines of what they expect

Regards

Yes, I definitely went into "hobby" mode when I found the PV that really made me stand back and say, "wow, I don't desire a cigarette after using this one!".

I do have two friends that vape. They are happily vaping the smaller sized units. One of them still smokes occasionally. The other guy totally quit cigarettes and only uses his PV. They still gave me a bit of a hard time when they first saw my Vtube but I quickly handled them that it's keeping me from smoking so shut up! lol They did.

My wife thinks I am too involved with all of this but she is happy I am not smoking so she doesn't give me too hard of a time. I even convinced her to buy me a Provari for our anniversary! :)

There is a lot of misunderstanding out there about the different devices and what they do and most people still don't really get it when you try to explain. So, I just resign myself for whatever might be said and ignore it for the most part.

Hey, I am not smoking, so I don't really care what people think. :D

I have found that vaping appeals to the nerd in me.
There are some for whom the mysterious workings of a ball point pen elicit glazed stares. This may not be a hobby for them.
I love taking things apart (although, putting them back together is not always the end result), so all the fiddly tasks associated with vaping reinforces my view that this is indeed a valid hobby.

They say everyone needs a hobby.

I have my share of hobbies including boating and wooden boats. I can tell you all kinds of stuff about varnish, silicon brass fasteners and nautical charts that you wouldn't have the slightest interest in. I'm also a naturally picky person who often wants the best when it comes to pursuits that I find interesting. I can get real geeky and opinionated about a lot of things including summer performance tires, PV solar panels, koi, and mods. However, I don't consider those interests to be a necessarily a hobby and I don't inflict my opinions on others unless they ask for them.

I smoked for 35 years and now I vape. I didn't consider smoking a hobby. I just bought and smoked a lot of crappy mass market cigarettes like Camels. It was an addiction.

For me, the same goes for vaping. It's an addiction, not a hobby. I know enough about the equipment and supplies to use some good quality gear. Good quality, nothing extravagant. Vaping gear is like cookware to me. I don't need the latest fancy French high tech skillet. My old cast-iron frying pans are just fine for me.

There is definitely an appeal if you like to tinker and understand how things work.

The other side of it is psychological, for me at least. I went from being ashamed of smoking to completely embracing this new way. Without having to duck down side streets and power smoke behind garbage cans while my wife waits for me it's sort of opened up a whole new free world.

That and you can't really tinker with a cigarette. The whole vaping thing reminds me of what it was like when I first picked up radio controlled helicopters. Lots of tinkering and setup. When you start building your own coils for rebuildable atomizers it really does feel like a hobby.

Smoked cigs for 55 yrs. Started because everyone else did, including my family. Kept it up because it enslaved me. It was easier to smoke less before the tobacco companies started adding MAO inhibitors to cigarettes, I really think that's what enslaves you more than the nicotine. That and the ingrained psychological responses, hand to mouth, oral satisfaction, inhaling etal.

Now I vape. I love to vape, I love to care for the PV's, I'm turning into a lab rat with DIY and the whole thing is pleasing to me. I'm down to 4mg nic in my juice now and it was easy to cut it down. I'm saving money, my life and I no longer stink like I've rolled in an ashtray. Life is good ;)

Another hobbyist here! It pretty much started as a hobby from the beginning. I've always been something of a collector (pack rat) and like I've said many times, love to tinker with things. Vaping is a great combination of all those things.

I love it all, from maintaining my PV's to building coils and measuring resistance. It satisfies the geek in me, while at the same time allowing me to live a healthier smoke free life :) DIY juice is next!

Take care all.

I'm willingly keeping myself from becoming a hobbyist. My goal is just to stay off smokes, and enjoy ejuice. I've said elsewhere that I actually prefer devices that are reminsicent of the Sony Walkman. By which I mean, casual, no-brainer, something that doesn't need much thought. Plug and play. For me, this is small and medium range boxes and stick style cigs. I think there's a trend to treat ecigs like computers or electronics, where you need to "upgrade" and there's a concept of the "latest and greatest" and you're aren't a real vaper unless you're moving away from "stick style" cigs sold to the "mass market sheep". I've fallen into it a bit with some mod purchases, but when I take a step back, I think some devices, while technically sound, are kind of impractical and silly looking. All I need to do is have a simple way of staying off cigarettes. End of story.
